  1. Agreed! Like anything else though, one has to weigh the consequences of action or inaction both of which will have consequences. I am just doing my homework and ask the experts in this forum that gives me better insight as to my next step. I already have a 350 from a Monte Carlo I bought for $700 dollars. It's in so-so shape which means I am going to rebuild before I stick in onto my 240z. Now, my enigma is how much engine to rebuild. Well, I was thinking of a 383 stroker with a carb'ed twin turbo and then... ...Grumpyvette and the word stroker woke me up to realities! Such as, why would I stroke (which is for compression and intake gain) when I am doing a turbo job! And why spend $1000 dollars on a stroker) which is counter productive when I need to lower my compression. Thanx again for the insights... I love this site!
  2. Grumpyvettte... I thank you for the explanation. I did some research amont other forums and they have averaged from between 40/50 hp gains like you've predicted. The bang for the buck = $20/$25 per hp gain. I guess that's not really bad.
  3. Hello everyone... I am wondering if you guys could share your knowledge. What HP gain does one get from stroking a SBC 350 to 383??? Now, I don't want you to think I didn't think about all the other factors that an engine may make using better cams, heads, etc. These certainly are considerations but they add to the money part as well. I know that my question may sound incomplete but all I wanted to know is really how much one gets from just a straightforward basic stroker build can get in HPs. The reason I ask is that I've researched and found that to stroke to 383, the kits (SUMMIT, SCAT) etc, average to say... $1000.00. For this much money, how much HP does one gain? I just want to calculate the HP bang for the big bux one spends. Is it worth it to stroke and SBC up? Thanx.
  4. How about building a website for "Automated Confession". The Pope will love it. Just Paypal to the Vatican and then email or voice your confession, then it automatically gives you your penance of 10-20 Hail Marys!! Joking aside, I know a gazillion people who write up HOW TO manuals on any subject and market them. You'll be surprised as to how many people pay for that stuff!! Good luck.
  5. Computer Science Degree: Currently a Database Architect Hobby: Pilot - General Aviation - Piper Archer (my faster Z). Team: Raiders What I want to be when I grow up: still a Z fanatic I just love flying... in the air or on the road. One of my Z's license plate: IT KN FLY!!!
  6. Don't know how old your carb is but there are brass floats (older style) and there are rubber floats. The brass floats leak in time! Anyway, I suspect that one way or the other, the float is the target here. Either, it is being overrun, it's leaking or maybe the pivot/spring is stuck. Carb rebuild maybe???? Hope this helps. Also, please keep us posted even after you slay this gremlin. Good Luck!!!
  7. Specially if the wife is on the passenger side and you corner left... what a rush :) J/K!!! Yep... the V8 motor was the missing piece when they first produced this sportscar!!! Congratulations Sir!
  8. Thanx for educating me, Dustin. I love this forum!!! If you don't mind, you now have a footstep follower!
  9. Hey Dustin... Forgive my ignorance but, can the flipping of those headers shown on the link really work on the SBC 350/383? Can one just flip these headers and they bolt right up onto the head of the SBC or do I need to be educated in some fabrication I would need besides the 90 deg bend? I am on the same track as you and this sure is very valuable info for me.
  10. Thanx for the explanation about the float being overrun! Makes a lot of sense to me. I guess both our recommendations make sense here. The book is called (not exact) Holley 4150/4160, Tuning and Repair. It's a red book and if you do eBay Search on "4150 Holley", I see 2 of them being sold right now. Definitely goes into every system in the carb. I am building a 383 stroker for my 240z which will eventually be a twin turbo blow through. That is why I have the manual. Cheers.
  11. I vote that you keep the 280zx. I think the 1984-1988 300zx was the worst design for Z's. Also, the digital dash is going to be a pain to find in case you need to replace it. I had a 1988 turbo 300zx (got in accident and was totalled and I should have kept the LSD diff!!) and the digital dash and for some reason, just didn't feel like I had a sports car, instead it was just another luxury Maxima! My 2 cents.
  12. I have a manual on tuning Holley 4150/4150 carbs and according to it, the float level will rise if one opens the gas intake port or raise the fuel pressure. For every 1psi raised, the float will be raised 1/32 of an inch. This is an old manual but is very comprehensive. It describes everything as I show below: - Intake system - Idle system - Main jet - accelerator system - power system - secondary system (vacuum and mechanical) - choke system Let me know if you need me to look up something for you. Hope this helps.
  13. I fell in love with the early Z's mainly because of the rack and pinion steering. I didn't like the later Z's when they started making them like luxury cars. Just my 2 cents worth. I like it like a true sports car it is without the power steering stuff.
  14. Does the steering components clear this engine as it sits on your pics?
  15. I'll take it... (if you include your spyder with it !!)) J/K, Vinh. I just love your hybrids!!!. I got a running unregistered 280zxt car for $300!!! Here in Sacramento, California!!!
  16. One more question, OTM. How did your garage floor turn out after all the wet sanding you've done? Should I have A LOT OF garbage bags on the floor to keep it from turning the RUSTOLEUM color I put on? My wife is ready to kill me with all the mess I have in my kingdom (garage... and my sometimes other kingdom... the bathroom). Thanx.
  17. OTM: I forgot to give you kudos for what you've done for this thread and forum!!!! I've read the mopar thread before this and has asked my Canadian friend to smuggle me some Tremclad... until now that you've proven RUSTOLEUM US works! Some US people had problems with the US RUSTOLEUM but I think you've found that "Professional" was it. I have a lot of XMAS vacation days to spend on this to off I go! I am going to be doing a two tone job (Black and Silver... yey Raiders!!!, I know... we have 1st draft this year ) and post pics later on in Jan!!! Thanx again for pioneering this for us Z boys, OTM!!!
  18. Hey Austin... You ask about UV rays, car wash (in the form of rain, sometimes, acid rain), aren't the mailboxes, patio furnitures, barbecues enought hardness test for Rustoleum???? Also, setting up for a good home made paint booth is a BEAR!!!! Just setting up an exhaust fan for it... OMG!!! I think I'll try this Rustoleum job with my ZX. I'm budgeting $120 dollars on this for the paint, accessories and a couple of cheap sanders from Harbor(Freak). PS... (a little change of subject here... sorry guys) I still love your wastegate job!!! Hope it's still holding up!
  19. Nice... very, very nice. Where did you tap your oil feed to the turbo????
  20. I am a private pilot and have pilot friends that have restored and saved beautiful planes. One particular friend restored a 1941 Stearman. Get this... - It took us (I was helping) 2 years to dismantle the plane! - It took him another 9 years to put it back together. He had to get the blueprints from Boeing and he practically rebuilt the fuselage, spars, etc. ...hope you get the picture!!! The plane afterwards????.... Priceless. Flies like a dream. Just like new.
  21. Now that you mention it, you're right rontyler! The O2 Sensor will send back a rich signal after you try and fool the IAT and then the ECU does it's adjustments! Thanx for the reply. Also, the ECCS question is about my 280ZX and that the ECCS did not come into play until then (after the 280z). I got an original ECCS manual from Datsun and that is where I get info on all the 13 sensors that the 280ZX's uses and think of ways to manipulate it. The ECCS uses 13 sensors to manage timing, fuel and the emissions!
  22. Ok folks... I've searched.... and searched... nada! All I get was threads that argue as to where to relocate IATs. Anyway, I'd like to ask if any of y'all have tried to fool our IAT to gain more HP? Please don't flame. I am seeing a lot of products out there for other cars fooling the IAT and I'd like guidance from this great forum! I pretty much know about how our stock ECCS equipped cars work but definitely no knowledge on more detailed workings of the electronics brain. Like... how much resistance is used to fool the ECU regarding the IAT, if you can fool it. Question then: Does this really work? Does the ECU really pump more fuel and advance the timing? I'm thinking yes, but of course I'd like to ask you gurus out there who knows how the ECU's work more than I do. Thanx.
  23. You are a hero, "dsommer"!!! I am only a half hour away from "Team III Wheel" and I'll schedule some time off to see them in person. I will bring my 280zx and 240Z and see if I can mock up the rims and then post some pics for all you guys. This is so you'll get an idea of how they would look on both these type cars. I'll try and get all views (front, side, side profile, etc). This should give y'all the imaginations you'll need to think of. I'll see how kind they are and go from one extreme (17 X7) to the another (17 x 9 or even 17 x 11). Hopefully, they'll have tires already mounted! Wish me luck!
