LS1 thoughts (Hollow, lopey idle) - Mentor needed.
biohzrd replied to duragg's topic in Gen III & IV Chevy V8Z Tech Board
Well I will go easy on you and tell you that you hav not heard very many ls based engines. You can very easily get what you are wanting with a cam swap, headers, and good exhaust. That is all my car has in it, and it sounds like a beast. As far as any hocus pocus with a huge flywheel ect.... there really isn't any. It is all in the heads with these engines. Now to the muncie/5speed idea instead of a T56. IMO it isn't a good idea. Most T-5's will not hold the kind of power a moderate cammed ls will put out. If you don't like the 5th and 6th gears just don't use them.. Hope I was able to help you out some. Same cam (Thunder Racing RapTR Cam)as mine, not my car, and I put 442rwhp with only that headers, good exhaust, ls6 intake with a ported throttle body. -
Swapping out the LT1/T56 for an LS1/T56 + turbo!
biohzrd replied to 80LS1T's topic in Gen III & IV Chevy V8Z Tech Board
You should be fine with the stock bottom end. It really all comes down to the tune, and not trying to push it too hard. Most of the lower end issues I have witnessed have come down to those two things. Keep it around 6 to 8 lbs of boost with a mild cam, good tune and you will make your power for a long time. People get greedy and break things. -
UPDATE!!!! wil have pics soon!!! been working on my x-member setup, and lowering the rack / mid section of the x-member. what i am in the process of doing may work out perfectly. looking at using the stock rack( lowered of course ) and adding late 80's early 90's 4-runner irs outer tie rods. they are actually called j-rods a lot of times. basically cure the lowering aspects of the rack. as soon as i have it setup the way i like, i will post some pics.

i 110% agree with you braap... the whole point of this site has been an open book as far as specs, and info goes. i have been a member of this site for a long time, and have always looked at it as the place where people come for answers, and not flaming, bs, or quick fixes that may not be correct. if i find a way to fit my ls1/t56 in my z32, it is open to eveyone here. this is what i feel that has made hybidz the best "car specific" forum around. i am throwing my hat in the ring on any info i can give on making this happen. just an update. between honey-dos and the IHRA races in Louisiana this weekend, i was able to mount the modified X-Member. have lots of pics, but my home comp is infected!!!!! will try and get some up soon!!!!!

I just hope it isn't as pricey as thier 240sx kit, but i don't see that happening. I built my own lsx 240sx before there was a kit, and I think I'll just keep on working on my own.

LS1 300zx sump issue

a custom pan would be nice. -
very nice!!! are those mustang rims on there? can't wait to get my ls1 in mine.
-
lookin good. just makes me wish i had more time to spend on mine right now. trying to find a junked k-member so i can get to work on a tubular one that will lower the rack. i'll keep you up to date.
-
looking good. was just thinking about it the other night on my drive back to work in houston, but have you thought of using an after market bell housing? i had one a few years back in a camaro, and it seemed to be a little smaller overall. may allow more clearance in the ever critical firewall area. another idea running through my head is making a tubular k-member that mounts the rack lower. i have lowered the rack in other vehicles, and never noticed much of an impact on the steering. i think it can make more of a difference in a manual application than a power steering setup. also looking towards a hydro-boost setup for my brakes. they take up a lot less room then a normal system, and work great.
-
I say go for it. Hopefully I will be doing the same soon except with a ls1/t56 combo. I'm right down the road from you over here in Baton Rouge. I'll have to get with you sometime and give you a hand.

not sure if it's been brought up or not, but maybe taking the approach that i've used on 240sx swaps may help. GTO pan, notch the k member, find yourself a BFH, and go to town on the tunnel. i think there should be enough room there without cutting the firewall all to pieces. just have to get a little creative. also there is a company that sells a modified oil pan for the 240sx that give more clearance. kinda pricey though. http://www.sikky.com/products/mount_kits/nissan_mounts/ls1__s14_240sx/S14_pan i'll be putting mine together hopefully here in a couple of months. is the insall manual that was going around a few years back still availible?

Windtunnel Testing the Datsun S-30 Z
biohzrd replied to Mikelly's topic in Windtunnel Test Results and Analysis
I'm all in on the second round. Tried to pm you mkelly, but it would not let me. Just let me know. -
great info on your site... i am all for this b/c i too plan on using a vk56 to base an engine build on. i think it should be fairly easy to pick up some serious hp out of this engine. keep up the good work. let me know how the manifold fabbing goes. i am trying to figure out one myself.
-
it does look an aweful lot like a diesel dyno. heh heh heh. trust me i'm not bashing the manifold at all. i own a titan, and love the engine and tranny. i was just pointing out that with the right intake/head setup, this engine could realistically spin up to 7500 rpm with out batting an eye, and do it all day long. putting a turbo on it and things get real fun!!! if the bottom end could hold, i think 700hp would be a sinch.
-
back from the dead. found this on another post http://www.titantalk.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=9361 on a different note: one of the biggest problems with i see with the whole set-up is the design of the intake manifold itself. the runners are almost 22in long. it was designed for torque and is actually more like the older chevy tpi manifolds than the lt1 manifold. longer runner ='s more torque/ shorter runner ='s more hp. i think with a shorter runner length, and by opening up the heads, you could really wake this motor up. imagine an ls1 with 32 valves.

just a quick question on the r230. i saw in a blow up drawing that on the cover there is whats called an oil outlet. is this something that has to be hooked up to a resavoir or is this the same thing as a breather??? any help would be appreciated. thanks

there is know way i would trust a mail order program to work in my car correctly on the first try. i've seen guys lose ecu's, harnesses, and complete engines that way. best thing to do is to find a good tuner in your area. i'm one of the people who happen to have that. here is a good site to go to. http://moates.net/ or http://www.moates.net/gmecm/hworder.html i can tell you the quality of his hardware is second to none. the engine pictured i helped put in. he does all my and my friends tuning. it is just not a plug and play setup so to speak. at most you could only be close with a mail order program.

i hope you realize the can of worms that has just been opened. haha a new swap to ponder over. i too have always wondered that same thought" can it be done" well its good to know that it can. your about to become a very popular person. good work and keep it up.
-
just a simple question. i can get either brand for around a $1000, brand new, complete at my door. i'm leaning towards the pro action heads right now.going on a destroked 406ci. going with a 3.25 stroke and 6 inch rods. efi setup and a 296/304 duration .539/.558 roller cam. looking to kill off some torque and spin the hell out of it.
-
have to agree with grumpy on this one. check the valve springs. have a similar setup in a friends car and had the same problem. it would fall flat on its face after about 6500 even on the spray. put in new springs and that did the trick. now she'll scream all the way to 7500 no problems.

water spray on a air to air intercooler
biohzrd replied to bumble zee's topic in Turbo / Supercharger
i saw a demo at the old hotrod fest. put on by tnt to show how they'r nozzles were better then the competition using water. did a real nice job too. i thought at that time if it would work to cool a radiator or i/c. the only concern i would have would be the effects on the solenoids or pump. i geuss you could always find pumps for water. -
i have been seriouslly looking into putting together a twin turbo sbc. a destroked 400( aka 377). doing some reasearch i've noticed that many tt cars will get way out of control when the boost comes on. what i was wondering is would using a bigger turbine housing say around a 1.0 to 1.15 area with two t04b's be very feasable. in other words a planned turbo lag. this way you would be up in the rpm range a little befor they would kick. if so how much lag would i be looking at? 2000, 2500, ect.... i know that this is not much to go on but i'm not looking for exact answers just ya'lls ideas and thoughts on this. and as always thanks a bunch
-
i guess i should let you know what i'm building. it's going to be a 406 destroked to 377. 8 to 1 comp. with a converted lt1 intake and pro action heads. i want 700 to 800 hp. would twin to3's be able to handle it or am i going to have to use something bigger. to kill some of the torque it's going to have to have a higher rpm cam so to speak. thats my delima. any help is appreciated
-
i have also wanted to do a turbo v8. i was really wanting to do a twin turbo setup and was wondering about the diffs b/t the t03 and t04. i've always heard that to3's would run out of air flow at about 5500 to 6000 rpm and that the to4's would be the better choise b/c they would flow all the way up to 7000+ rpm. also what about using a deisel turbo. they seem to be pretty large but can they handle the rpm's of a gas powered v8
