That sounds cool. Pretty far from me, but once I get the Z going I'll probably come sometimes, is it acctually gonna be at midnight, or is that just the name? Would be cool to have a marin meet thing too, but I think I'm just about the only person on here who lives in marin...

Haha ya, I've always liked em. Never loved them, and still don't, but I like them enough to have one for a few months. I will definitely look over the car with a fine-toothed comb. Well I'm gonna be losing the convinces anyways haha. Except I guess this one won't be totaly customized to my liking, as the Z will be, but it should be cool. Yes, I've got some other offers. And I will be going to check it out with the sole purpose of checking it out. I wouldn't be able to hand over the mini then anyways because I'd have to smog it, and have my mom sign over the title first. But the other nice thing about the 914, like the Z is that it is also pre-75, so I wouldn't have to smog it either, which would be awesome! Haha ya the little engine probably won't impress me. I mean it's technically .2 liters bigger than the mini's, but it doesn't have 4 valves per cylinder, a cross-flow head, or a blower haha. But I don't mind, I can wait to be impressed by my far superior Z , and this is just a means of getting said far superior car road-worthy. I've always liked the 944's too, but not enough to where I'd ever want to own one. Haha yeah, I have a much much shorter commute. Even if I drove to srjc every day from my house in marin, I'd still have a much, much shorter commute than you haha. I still can't imagine doing that every day, I don't know how you do it! Ya it's pretty cool. I usually hate widebodies, but it looks good on the 914 for some reason. Also I saw that the heads alone from that 2.0 engine he's including go for around $550 on CL. So I should be able to bring in some extra cash by selling that engine. And I'm sure that 914 fanatics would love this car, so come summer time when I sell it, I shouldn't have too many problems selling it. I really just see it as part of getting my Z finished. As I said, I have plenty of time, it's money I lack haha.

Thanks for the advice Leon! And yes, it is that car. I wasn't planning on buying wheels yet, but I was bored and emailed them about those wheels and they told me to call that number so I did and then I got the price for the wheels. I wont be getting wheels until I have en engine dropped in, paint done, full suspension done, etc. Basically when the car is ready to drive except the interior. But they're one of my favorite rims and I'd love to get them, so I was just trying to figure out how to get them without importing them from the UK. And I did! Well the 914 is kinda a cool car. I don't like them that much, I mean they're my favorite porsche, but I don't like porsches that much. I've never driven a RWD car before so this would get me used to it, plus the 5 speed would get me out of the habbit of shifting into 6th gear (reverse is in the same place on a datsun 5 speed haha). I won't touch this car. The only money I will spend on it is gas, and maybe an oil change if need be. I will probably only drive the porsche for about 3 months or so. I'll definitely watch out for heavy wear. I talked to the guy on the phone, and he seems pretty honest... He did offer to add in a gun as part of his side of the trade haha, but otherwise a pretty normal guy. Going up to concord to see the car on friday, so we'll see what condition it's really in. But it's a coo little car, I should have some fun in it while I'm waiting to drive my Z. Plus it will pay for paint, suspension, finishing the chassis, and basically getting the Z ready to drive. We will see what happens... But I like the idea of getting used to a RWD car better than sitting on my mini and wishing I had more money to spend haha.

Well... I've pretty much got all of the undercoating off the driver's wheel well. I'm about to go chisel off the last bit of it. Also got both the stock spring perches all ground off of the front strut tubes. Hopefully I can finish sectioning them this week. Also, looks like I'm trading my mini for a nice restored porsche 914 + 4 grand. Should let me get my kicks out, and get me stoked for the Z. Plus it has some cool stuff in it like a momo steering wheel and a cool shift knob. But I'm more stoked about the 4 grand. And, I just got off the phone with a rota dealer who is setting me up with some aleica's in 15x8 et -5 for under $600 shipped. Pretty stoked about that, and I can get them in any color I want, choosing between: Pink, Gold, Bronze, Hyper black, or Gunmetal. Still can't decide on color of the rims, but I am pretty much decided on having the Z painted orange. I think gunmetal is probably gonna be the color... But bronze looks cool too. Anyways, here's a picture of the wheel in gold. Looks pretty flashy. I don't know how gold rims would look on an orange car. I think I'll have to go with bronze... Here's bronze...

Sounds like you made it off easy with getting them installed. I keep reading of people having issues with their seats being too close to the steering wheel haha. Makes me glad to have the short arms. Looking forward to seeing how they look!
-
ya that's not a bad deal at all. Cheaper than kragen seats, and probably much better. If you need any welding for rails or whatever, let me know! Haha I wish I could splurge on Z stuff. I've been saving up... for registration . I want an lsd... But I'm saving that for a future upgrade! it's almost next year... who's counting? haha
-
Woah I took forever to reply to this. Any updates? Did you happen to take any pics of the bar installed? And was it very heavy? Haha I shouldn't have any problems with that, I am about 5' 11" but I have short arms and legs so I like my seat really close to the wheel. Those seats look great! I was thinking about getting the R100's, but decided that I really want a true bucket for the driver's side, so I will probably get a kragen seat for passenger (girlfriend doesn't want to sit in a bucket haha), and the sparco speed 2 for the driver's side. Should be cool.

Ah I see haha. I got a little excited thinking about a blown 350 in a Z. V8's aren't my thing and I am not familiar with vortec heads, but it definitley sounds cool. And 400+ HP in a sub 3,000 lb car... talk about speed. Funny that you have to pull an L28 out of your car. I can't wait to drop mine in! You're really lucky to have a rotisserie... I wish I had one, that would make a lot of things so much easier. But alas, I am in highschool and I have no money for something like that haha. Anyways, looking forward to seeing how your car turns out! What does your wife think of the whole thing?
-
Woah, that's a good price! Weren't those the ones the guy was trying to get 500 for?

Sounds like a pretty good start. Might I suggest some things first. Rather than getting camber plates, get adjustable LCA's from techno toy tuning (buy your coilovers through them too), or AZC if you want a show car that won't see track time. You can get more camber than you'd ever want on the street out of adjustable LCA's, plus you get toe adjustment, and if you go with the TTT (I plan to), you can position the rear wheel in the wheel well the way you want it, so it's not so far forward like it is stock. The GC coilover set up is very high quality. I'm in the middle of putting the fronts on my car with sectioned strut tubes and illuminas for the rear of an mr2. Electronic cut out would be cool! I was thinking of doing it for my car but decided it was a waste of money for me. Make sure you read up on poly bushings, some of them, such as the T/C rod bushings, are not ideal for performance. I would recommend going with the TTT adjustable T/C rods instead of using poly bushings as they use a teflon coated rod-end instead of a bushing which takes the slop out and makes the rod much more effective. Plus you can then adjust caster which the front suspension on a Z lacks. I like the red interior, always been my favorite color for interiors, and mine was originally, so I am putting in a red interior as well. MSA (thezstore.com) sells some good reproduction interior pieces which are awesome and will go into my car! Let me know what diffuser you find to fit, I want to put one on my car. And honestly... the AZC brake kit isn't really worth it if you ask me. It seems like you want a show car, so that makes sense. But if you're just looking for a fun car, I'd save your money and get the vented front toyota 4 piston calipers and a 240sx rear disk conversion from modern motorsport. Use the money you saved to beef up your rear end and maybe do a cv conversion. That vq is gonna pump out some torque... and a stronger rear diff/axles will really save you some headaches in the future. Have fun with registration... my car has a lot of back fees that I'm still saving up for haha.

Looks like a clean car. Vortec 350 sounds awesome. Vortec as in a blower, correct? The bumper brackets are child's play. A little bit of heat and a breaker bar, they come off... With the heads of the bolts. 2 of the bolt heads sheared off when I tried to get the bolts undone. Anyways looks like a clean shell, you'll get to work on the fun stuff straight away since you don't have too much rust to take care of.

Nice clean car. The RL tower appears to have some welding on top of the tower support. I may be wrong... But that doesn't look like a factory weld. With the tar on the floors I had good luck with a chisel and a hammer. In tough spots, I used a heat gun as well. It took me about 2 weeks of a couple hours a day to get all the tar off haha. 9,934 miles seems too good to be true... Especially if it has no engine. I'd bet that it has been tinkered with or the odo has turned over to 0. My shell had 80,500 miles on the odo but it sat for most of it's life and only had 2 owners when the car was running, so I believe it to be true. Anyways, nice car! Looking forward to seeing what you do with it! What are your plans besides the future VQ swap?
-
Well... Pulled the X member today, and got the car lower on jack stands and thought "wow the car looks really low, I wonder if it's at about what final height will be..." I measured it... The rocker panels were 10" off the ground, meaning the car would be about 5.5" lower in the front at final planned ride height . That made me happy, so I kept working, and proceeded to chisel off most of the undercoating in the driver's side front wheel well. Something just occured to me though... The undercoating doesn't have asbestos in it, I hope? I wasn't wearing a mask or anything... Please tell me I don't have cancer now... Haha.

Anyone ever put a L24 in a 280z before?????
luseboy replied to turboHLS30's topic in S30 Series - 240z, 260z, 280z
http://datsunzgarage.com/engine/ That site has a wealth of info on this. I would still say you should use EFI or a standalone like mega squirt if you are set on using a turbo. But read up on that site, it taught me a lot. Some info is incorrect... But the vast majority is right -
Replacement Options for stock combo switches

That's pretty cool... I might have to do this... I have to re-wire my car completely anyways. -
uerethane front air dam fixable?
luseboy replied to MuhKaydenZ's topic in S30 Series - 240z, 260z, 280z
I'd think some careful application of a heat gun and some patience could fix that... i mean i've heard of people plastic welding holes in urethane air dams and using them then. I'd think it'd be possible. But is it something really special or a really good price or something? You can buy some pretty cool air dams from msa. They even have a couple urethane ones. And the pricing is very good on them... -
I'm glad you ended up getting them! Should be sweet! How much did you end up talking the guy down to? Those should look really nice in your interior. Nice job haha!

What route did you end up taking? L24 or turbo-ing your L28? I hope you knew that you could put carbs on an L28 and make better power that way. I am putting a ZX L28 in my 240z, and putting triple webers on it. It's a very common thing to do... But I assume you went with the L24. What problems are you having? It's really simple to get a carbed engine to run. As long as you have fuel coming to the carbs, spark, and a starter, you should be able to get it. Be more specific so that people can help you. Or try searching... this has been covered about as many times as the police officers in super troopers could say "meow" in a sentence. -
Haha it sure did! My Gf's dad was telling me yesterday that he saw a red Z driving on the freeway. I asked "did it have a super loud exhaust?" Haha he said it did so I figured it must have been you it would have been when you were going home anyways. He thought you must get a lot of cop attention haha. Right so I acctually got a lot done today. Pulled the passenger side strut (again without a spring compressor). And acctually the insulater was stuck to the strut shaft, so I went to cut it off with a saw-zall, and the vibration broke it free and it shot about 20 feet across my driveway! Haha it was funny/scary all at the same time. I then proceeded to pull the steering knuckles (pretty stuck on there), front sway bar, and steering rack. Next thing is gland nut round 2. Let's see how that one goes. Also I'm going to start rebuilding the steering rack soon (what kind of grease do I need?). I also ground down the stock spring perch on the driver's side. I took some pictures finally, I've been well over-due. What is that wheel called? I have 2 of them, they came on the front of the car, and they say made in the usa on the back. So are the american racing, centerline, or what? Any ideas? I know they aren't original... they're 14x7. I'll use them as spares. Or maybe I'll sell them, I haven't decided. They're pretty curbed. I also put in some pictures of my dash that I'm working on. I've just been filling in the cracks and the cigarette lighter/hazard knob holes with some caulking. Once I get it all nice, I will spray it with black plasti-dip, which should give it a nice texture/feel. I also have a picture of my center console which was in 2 pieces when I got it. I sprayed it and the door release handle surrounds with plasti-dip. Anyways I've gotten a lot done and I'm happy with that. Oh! I almost forgot. I also wanted to show where I'm thinking of putting the filter for my CAI (cold air intake, don't know if that's a well-known acronym here). It would have been easier to set up with a 4bbl carb as I had originally thought I'd do. But with my current triple weber fixation, it will be tough to get a box. Besides the TWM air box, does anyone make an air box for triple carbs? Anyone come across a DIY? I searched around and couldn't find anything...

Thanks guys! Sounds good to me. I'll just make sure to clean out the tank really well and replace all the lines and everything. Should work well. Haha after getting a ride in your car leon, I'm super stoked to get my Z going. Hoefully it'll be soon... I mean hopefully I will be able to sell my mini soon
-
haha well another question for me to answer on my own. Part of me is thinking it would make sense to get rid of the stock fuel system and just put in a fuel cell. I must be crazy, right? What is involved with putting a cell in? I need to do custom hardlines anyways... so I figure I might as well. Summit plastic 16 gallon cells are only $170... might be a smart/safe idea. what do you think? anyone? haha
-
That does seem to be what a lot of racecars use. I think a flange would acctually be the "best" option next to welding to full ss pipe, now that I think of it. I think I ill call around and get some quotes for getting some flanges welded on or for getting the pipes expanded for the spring method as described. thanks for the lead on the shop! I will be sure to call him! haha nope, just made me jealous that you get to drive your Z! haha.
-
That's a good price! Yours definitely sounds great in-car too. Haha I could hear you leaving my driveway from inside my house. Ok I failed on thinking that the muffler would slip over the piping... I think. I'm still not sure. But I don't think I can use a U-clamp, I have to use a band clamp, right? so it couldn't be one of these, it'd have to be one of these on each side of the muffler/resonator?
-
wouldn't the muffler/resonator slip over the piping as it is?
-
Ok I think I'm on the right track now... So the plan (currently) -MSA 6 to 1 header -straight into a huspower II resonator (as close as I can get it to the collector) -2.5" back to a borla pro xs muffler -2.5 back to a nice tip I hate to use exhaust clamps... But I can't weld SS so the resonator and muffler will have to be clamped on... Not my favorite thing to do but whatever. I can't find sound clips of either of these installed on a Z... but I was figuring maybe someone had some insight. I think it should sound pretty good compared to what I've heard of these on other cars. Plus borla is a respectable company.
