  1. If I were to do it again I would go with the modern motorsport flanges. The way it's set up now with the 280zxt/2+2 axle flanges you have to drop the inner lower control arm to change out the axle or struts. You can't compress the axles enough to clear the zxt/2+2 stub axle flange. Using modern motorsport then you can use stock seals and not have to swap the dust cover from the 240 stub axle flange to the zxt/2+2 stub axle flange.
  2. You can also try grundys. They have no mileage limit as long as it is club outings, etc. They are more leniate when it comes to the year of car.
  3. if build date starting 4/87 should have clutch type lsd.
  4. Looks good. Here is a page on su'sm Is that a '72? http://www.jetlink.net/%7Eokayfine/sutech.html What year vega do you have?
  5. put the phillips screw on each side of the assembly, and tighten down. This will take the pressure off the tamper proof screws. Then use a pair of wire cutters and bite into and turn the one way screws out. They are very soft metal.
  6. Unless you stiull have the center lock bolt in you will have to cut the pins. http://www.atlanticz.ca/zclub/techtips/index.html
  7. WOW! $100 for a shortened shifter? I'm in the wrong business. The first 2 are cut off 4 spd shifters. By the looks of the msa shifter, it will only work on the 4 spd transmission with the short ears. It won't work with the early or late 5 spds unless you want to cut the ears down. That is a great price on the msa short throw so far. What I am trying to do is modify the long eared late 5 spd transmission to accept an actual short throw shifter.
  8. cut, drilled and tapped 1st gen shifter for use in a late long eared 5 spd transmission. Pics of other transmissions and shifters in the gallery for comparison. I'll use nuts and washers as spacers to help solidify the stud. Thunderz will put it in his car in about a week. With the location he drilled the transmission ears the length of the pivot compared to the msa short throw shifter is 1/4" shorter.

    short throw mod

cut, drilled and tapped 4 spd shifter. Will be using nuts and washers as spacers to strengthen the stud. This would be for use on a late 5 spd with the longer ears.
  10. drilled 1 1/16" higher. The 5 spd shifter will be cut, drilled, tapped and a stud installed to lengthen the bottom pivot point. pic courtesy of thunderz
  11. Both of these shifters came from a 1st gen one 4 spd the other 5 spd. The other measurements I noted came from a zx 5 spd shifter which is 1.5" shorter.
  12. jon, clear your private message box is full
  13. on a stock 5 spd zx shifter from neutral I get 2.375", so overall on the stock zx 5 spd, 1-2 4.75". These measurements were taken at the end of the shifter. with no knob. so bottom throw of 20mm made 4.75" top throw 1-2 shift. On a stock 240z 4 spd shifter from neutral is 2.75" making the overall throw 1-2 is 5.5".
  14. I added pics to my gallery showing 4 spd trans, early 5 spd and a late 5 spd along with shifters. jmortensen sent me a couple of his pics I have included. I put a 4 spd shifter in a late 5 spd on the bench. The shifter would go in when in neutral, but if it was in gear the pin would not line up. After I put it in while in neutral I could shift but, the shifter would hit the top of the shift rod cut out. You can see the mark on the truck shifter pic jmortensen supplied. My 4 spd shifter had the same mark but not as pronounced since i only had it in to check how it shifts. I plan on doing the mod technicalninja has discussed with the late 5 spd. Lengthening the bottom portion of a shifter the same amount I drill the new pivot hole higher. my gallery for trans pics and shifters. http://album.hybridz.org/showgallery.php?cat=500&ppuser=8318
  15. This is a pic from jmortensen. Notice the mark on the truck shifter just above the cup. This is where it hits the top of the shift rod cut out. I put a 4 spd shifter in a late 5 spd and I had the same mark.

    '73 4 speed

'73 4 spd manual, note the taller pivot pivot location
  18. Darrel

    late 5 speed

81-83 5 spd, note the lower pivot location. the 5 psds I have run across have a shorter shifter pivot. My 4 spd shifter would not work.

    shifters

280zx shifter, it can be configured for a 4 spd or a 5 spd by flipping the plastic bushing. 7mm difference.
