  1. Yes, the hose needs to stretch. Most are very dry and stiff after so much time. Nissan still sells new ones for about $25. The valve cover hose goes to the hose in front of the throttle body.
  2. The 5-speed was not an option untill 1977, so your 5-speed is from either a 280Z or 280ZX. The forged pistons are not required untill about 350hp or more. Even then, its only optional if you want to have them handle some detonation. Keep the boost stock (7-8psi) with your rearend and driveshaft. About 200lbs of torque. Anything above 10psi is recomended to get an intercooler. Once you're up to 18+psi with a larger turbo, then you can starting looking for forged pistons if you go that far with the engine build.

  6. The car ran before you replaced the FPR, but only with the vice grips on the return line... correct? And you changed nothing else except to unplug and replug in the fuel pump relay. Check to see the ECU has power (not sure how) maybe clean the contacts on it. The coil is obviously powered and not all six injectors will stop opening at once, unless they just are not getting a signal to open from the ECU.

  8. Ya, sounds bad if it does fire up and then dies just on the starting fluid. You're not getting fresh gas in there. Pull the return line off (near the fuel filter) and have someone crank it for a second. See if you have fuel pressure back out that way. Maybe use your vice grip idea to build pressure(just for a test). The junk yard FPR could be stuck open...? When I had one go bad, it got stuck mostly closed. I had really high fuel pressure.
  9. Hook up the fuel pump relay again. Turn the ignition on and depending on what model of Z you have you might hear the pump go for a couple seconds. Try cranking it for a few seconds. Then stop. Then crank again, then stop. When you disconnected the relay and started the car, you basically drained all the fuel from the lines. You'll have to work all the air out of the system. Did you hook up the vaccume hose from the FPR to the intake manifold? Try starting fluid to get it to fire up.
  10. Just the Z, Datsun 810, and 1st Gen Maxima 1977-84 is the 810/Maxima 2.4L L24 like the 240Z with fuel injection. 80's BMWs also used the same fuel injection setup as far as the AFM and computer go. They use a straight six, but the fuel rail is very different.
  11. I don't know why anybody has not mentioned this, but you already have the head and block from a turbo engine. The P90 is what the turbo engines use for a head and the F54 block is also the turbo block used. Now, during the 1981-83 engine builds, the F54 got dished pistons for the turbo and flat top pistons for the non-turbo. What you could do is take your engine apart and replace the pistons. This will lower your compression and allow more reliable boost. Stick on the exhaust manifold with turbo and run a turbo fuel system with computer and you'll be set. Oh, and replace the distributor. Either buy a water cooled turbo and run water lines, or get the oil feed lines from a turbo engine and the drain runs back into the oil pan.
  12. Has anyone read about the Z31 with a supercharger and turbo? Same idea. The supercharger cuts off at a certain rpm. The car has massive torque and high end power. ...since this is all just a dream and will never be done anyway, might as well talk...
  13. Same applies here. If you get the K&N filter, a larger throttle and port out the intake manifold, you'll be lucky to see +6hp. Larger injectors will run more rich, so you'll lose power. You need more air at higher rpms, not fuel. First port the head and put a bigger cam in there. Once that is done you can start worrying about running lean at 7000rpm if the bottom end is balanced to even go that fast. A full exhaust adds 8-13hp but only if all the intake and cam work is done. Bolt-ons really don't do a whole lot by themselves.
  14. My opinion is: Forget about stroking it. You're wasting time and money doing that. You can get 500hp from 2.8L Think more "high rpms" / less stroke. -Megasquirt is an option for a programable computer -Everything else is ok.
  15. I don't buy that for a second! If you want peak HP lots and lots of people opt for twins. I think the big draw of twins (and sequential setups) is the chance to achieve a large power bump while still retaining a fairly linear power curve. Don't cut my quote off so quickly. That's exactly what I explained in that paragraph. Faster spoolup as well as the higher hp numbers. You explained it with one word by saying a more "linear" power curve.
  16. Get a small hammer and hit the side of the starter and the start solinoid. ...try starting again after spraying some staring fluid in the throttle body with the throttle open. Hook up the intake tube again before cranking.

  18. On the twin turbo idea; dont' use different size turbos. The whole point of a twin turbo setup is to acheive those high horsepower numbers, and use a pair of smaller turbos. The smaller turbos will spool up at a lower rpm and give you torque faster like you want. But since there are two of them they can still pump out the higher psi than if there was only one. Well, plus twin turbos work well on "V" engines but that's not the case here. So is your goal 800hp? Or do you just want all the goodies to have a nice fat list of mods? If you want 800hp, I think you got the wrong engine... honestly, but I do like the L28. If you want 500hp then you'll be hard pressed to get that from an L28 turbo before you go blowing stuff up every year. My suggestion is use the T3/04 hybrid, keep it to a single turbo and build it as others suggest. You'll have 400hp or close to it and your engine will last more than 6 months. You won't be able to put the power down with the Z's suspension so going with more power than that will be pointless... then you'll be in the area of Scottie, that guy that swaped in the Corvette rear. Ok, so you're a guy who goes all the way or nothing at all. How many L28s have you built? And can you go over some of the mods you did on that engine and what you thought about it? ...even if it was an NA motor Oh, and the T5 is a good transmission. With that kind of power though you're going to want to just put in a higher geared rear. Either Keep the 3.54 and put an LSD in it, or go up to a 3.36 and mod it for LSD. The 5-speed will be fine. There are also aftermarket kits for the T5 that can increase the strength. The stock T5 is good for 350lbs, right? so about 350hp or so. However, the R200 is good for about the same. If you go with 400+hp you'll blow the rearend. Corvette time
  19. Ya, I know him. The car has a totally custom rebuilt performance non-turbo engine. New sound system, extra chrome stripes down the side, stuck right to the paint... lost of window stickers. The engine sounds good though... he's a nice guy though. Very Z knowledgable.
  20. Maybe it would be cheaper to just put a 350Z engine and transmission in your 280zx and turbocharge that engine. They do make turbo kits for them now. Replace the pistons with dished and you have a 3.5L turbo. Then you can get right on your fiberglass bodywork and interrior redesign like in your drawings.
  21. I like the fuel injection system. Once you get to know it, its not really that high maintenance.
  22. That is the best setup ever! So how goes the tuning? Make sure not to run too rich. If its too rich, double the boost!
  23. The 280zx is completely different length. The driveshaft splines are not the same and the rear connection at the differential is different on a T5. You will need to use the turbo driveshaft with the T5 and then have it modified to proper length and to use the stock differential flange or take the differential flange off the R200 in the turbo Z and use that on your 280Z's diff. Even so, the driveshaft length is different. Its quite a pain to do that. Stick with a Nissan transmission. Yes, the T5 came only in 1982-83 but its just a few parts to swap from the later year turbo to make the 81 a 5-speed. If you're swapping from a ZX to a ZX, then all the turbo driveshaft and transmission mounts just swap over.
