  1. Ok, sounds like you are on the right track. I am only 17, but I do have a job, I have experience working on car. I know your thinking how much experience can you have if your only 17 but I have been working on cars since I was like 12 or 13. My dad has had a sprint car since I was 10 and I have helped him with it since he had it pretty much. I haven't done an engine swap before but I have learned A LOT on almost every swap possible. I will be doing either an RB, SR, or L28et swap sometimes within the next year if I ever stop spending my money on crap I don't need IE a seat and other crap I don't need.

I had my 9 year old son helping me do my swap. Man, he schooled me. That boy had the biggest grin on his face when he was helping me. He just jumped right in. It was a great time. I want to do another swap.

  2. Hey Pat1 i was thinking about the trans mount for the swap im guessing your 280z had the manual in it, so i was just thinking, would the trans mount from the auto/manual 240z be the same? I'm not familiar with this as much as other things and if nissan was smart enough they would've produced the same trans mounts for the auto and manual for production costs but i could be wrong because i do believe manuals are smaller in size.

    Hey ShorkyfairladyZ

My 280z had a manual trans from the start. Are you talking about the mount or the crossmember? I see the manual crossmembers on ebay for cheap all the time so that won't be a problem. I used the stock skyline trans mount (the auto and manual are the same) and modded the mount to the stock 280z crossmember. It was easy I had to drill 2 holes and grind the crossmember down a little. Then it dropped right in.

  3. As many of you guys know that I have been building custom oil pans for the RB motors. I trying to make this swap less stressful for the guys who can't find a oil pan for the rb swaps. I'm thinking of a less costly mod by modifing the front sump pan to a rear swap pan. This mod would cost less than my custom pan. I was wondering if any of you guys would be interested in this.

    please give me some feedback

    thanks

    Patrick

  4. nice nice, how long was the soldering process?

and the whole wiring process itself?

I had my motor and trans in and everything was done but the wiring and I wired it up and had it running in about maybe a hour or less. I had to do the alternator regulator also which was easy also. I hooked up 4 wires to the rb20 loom and had it running. Then I hooked up all the gauges and tach. I used all autometer gauges. The wiring was about 8-10 wires to have it all hooked up then another 5 for the NIStune consult cable.

I had a problem with my coil packs and ignitor. I wired in a ignitor from a z32 and ditched the rb coil packs for a GM wasted spark coil pack and plug wires. Which made it easier to set the timing and was a lot less $$$ than a set of rb coil packs.

  5. here are some pics of the motor mounts and trans mounts. Also here is the wiring info I used for my swap

This link helped me tons on the wiring

    there is the wiring diagram

this helped alittle with the wiring to the tach, neutral switch, and installing the consult cable of the NIStune

  6. don't get the one with the cut harness thats a whole different headache. Get a motor swap with a uncut harness.

as for nistune it's AWESOME very easy to install and tune with. I got it from a NIStune dealer off this site. I soldered in the board myself and put the ecu in and had the car running in a few minutes. NIStune is worth every penny and more

  7. I see the rb25 is about 800.00 more than the rb20 when I was looking at doing this swap. A couple years ago I looked into doing this swap and I had people telling me it would cost about 5 grand to do. I said heck no. So a couple years later I looked into it a bit more and found out by doing this swap that it can be done for far less than 5k. Which is great. I'm sure that there are people thinking the samething that this swap cost alot of cash but it doesn't.

  8. I bought two engine swaps one came with a 5 spd trans and one with a auto trans. Both for 1300.00 local. The one with the 5spd trans had low compression so I pulled the trans and clutch stuff off and put it on the one with the auto trans and then I parted low compression engine swap out. Now that I think about it I have way less that 1500.00. I got the intercooler off eBay for 58.00. It was brand new 24x12x3 and I made my Intercooler pipes out of 2.5 in exhaust tubing that I got from summit. I bought a walbro fuel pump for 100.00 shipped. I did all the wiring myself. I got all the pinouts and the wiring diagrams and figured out all the wiring while I was flying to my wife's friends wedding. I did all the work myself.

I have been working on cars for a living for over 15 years and I'm a Mazda Master tech /ASE Master tech so this stuff is a breeze for me.

  9. OOOOOHHHH BOY, now how is my 17 year old self going to come up with the money to buy an oil pan from you. Buy an RB25 from the net, R32 RB20 engine mounts and then wire the entire thing up. Not to mention the drive shaft I'm gonna need and a better radiator all the piping and stuff and then the extras I want just because I want them. Stuff like this makes me NEED to have something. Maybe I will manage to get ~ $5,000 before summers end and do a father son build with my dad and have a super fast z. I don't see it, but there is always a maybe, it would be just to much fun.

5,000 dollors ,I did my entire swap for less than 1500.00 before I started adding stuff. Thats everything engine, trans intercooler and all the intercooler piping I mean everything. That's less than 1500.00 to have it running and driving. The wiring was a breeze. Guys don't let this swap stress you out. It's easy

  10. Pat, your the man :icon14:

Your picture just helped me decide which way i'm going to go as far as motor mounts go, which is going to be with the stock Skyline mounts.

Thank you for the quick reply and clear picture.

If I can't get our race boat's oil pan fabricator to make me a rear sump pan for my RB20DET then you will definately be getting my business here very soon

no problem,I'm here to help out. Let me know if you have anymore questions.

  11. Not trying to threadjack too much, but how far forward does the gear shifter sit in the stock shift hole?

I found one picture of how far forward it sat when using the Skyline mounts in a 280ZX RB swap but not any of how it sit's in an S30 when using the Skyline mounts.

If you have picture's of how it sits I would greatly appreciate it, as well as the others in this thread probably will too.

The shifter in my 280z sits about 1 inch foward if that. I know what picture of the 280zx your talking about. It doesn't look anything like that

here is a quick picture. let me know if you guys have anymore questions.

    shifter 001_thumb.JPG

  12. sure, no problem that's why this forum is here to help people

I charge 475.00 for the rear wheel drive block and 575.00 for the all wheel drive block

the awd blocks require alot more metal work as you can see in the thread.

the rb20's are 98% of the time rwd block so it's 475.00 plus shipping to you. That includes the custom oil pan, a modified pick up and sealant to seal it all up.

  13. Wait a second, you can use skyline engine mounts? I though you had to have the 200zr (RB20 Powered 300zx z31 fairlady z) mounts and oil pan. I know in your case pat you used a custom home built oil pan. If you can use the skyline mounts then I am gonna so get me an RB.

Yes I used the stock rb20 mounts. I had to slot the holes in the s30 cradle a little foward (about 1/4 inch). This swap is easy. And it runs like a beast. I have a rb25 turbo, 440 injectors and NIStune to tune the ecu. I think I'm going to put a holset hx35 on it to see how that runs.

  14. the problem with the whole swap is that you will need a rear sump pan. Thats where I can help you. I have been building custom oil pans for the rb swaps. When I did my swap I could not find a rear sump pan. Nissan no longer makes the pan for the zr200 that is a direct swap for the rb's in to the s30. So I decided to start building them to help all the guys and girls out with this swap. See my thread below
