I just got the latest edition of Automotive Engineering from SAE, they had a short article about the new Borg-Warner VTG turbos which they have developed with Porshe. thehelix112 hit the nail on the head, they said that previous variable vane turbos couldnt take the heat that was generated in a gasoline engine. The new 911 turbo will use the BW unit and make power from 1800 rpm!!! You can read more info about hte turbos and different technologies in them on BW's website. Variable vane turbos are certianly awesome and I think its something we will see alot more of...

Great Place for mandrel tube.. aluminum and SS!!
240hoke replied to 240hoke's topic in Fabrication / Welding
Careless if you order straight tube make sure you order a good amount, if you notice there is a 10 dollar cutting charge... i dunno if thats per cut or what. I got all my bends in you can see them in the "New intercooler progress" thread in the turbo section. They are really nice, i laid them next to a 30 dollar bend and they are identical, the aluminum welds very nice as well. I have already ordered more to finish my setup. -
gearheadstik Nice work on the I/C. I am definitly diggin the black! I always thought about doing that to mine but couldnt bring myself ot doing it. Looks good man. -Austin

Have you double checked you fuel maps, and acc pump settings? make sure you dont have any skew numbers in your fuel curve, a instant rich setting can make your car behave like that.

I second that, its likely the cause. Also need to make sure its adjusted so you see all the magnets for as long as possible. Not jsut a flash when you are setting them up, play with it until you can see then for a couple degrees or it can break up at higher rpms.

Hey guys, I sold my huge FMIC a couple months ago and decided to expiriment around with a different setup. I ended up getting a verticle core treadstone unit off ebay. I choose the smaller verticle core for several reasons. - Short pipes with less bends - Short Verticle tubes should be more efficient - Less charge volume - Weight. I just got a started this weekend so here are a few progress pictures: Since the core is so small I'm going for maximum effciency. The air ducting is 16ga aluminum and will hopefully help force the air through the i/c and keep it from rolling around the tanks. Also made a slight inward taper on it to help with airflow. Running the tubing under is very tight but it think worked out very well it gets the pipe out of the engine bay quickly and will oly a few bends. My belly pan/ spliter should keep it from harm. Still have alot of work to do, the exit tube will go through the vent hole and to hte throttle body. With all the added room up front I will also be mounting the airfilter up front and my methanol tank The intercooler and sections of pipe infront of the radiator core will be powdercoated wrinkle black, and in hte engine bay hte pipes will be brushed. Lemme know what yall think, I wont be workin on it again for another two weeks. So Ive got some time for revisions

The front brake line can be run straight down through the fender, jsut drill a hole and put a grommet in it. Then "T" it at the frame rail and run another line for the passenger side along the crossmember. Use rubber lines tubing clamps and small self tapping screws to hold the brakes lines on. Its really a pretty easy job and shouldnt take but an afternoon. Really helps clean things up. Ill take some pictures of mine next time I am home. -Austin

RS-Watanabe Group Buy... Anyone interested?
240hoke replied to 240Z_Master's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
+1 For Quoc, I bought my Wats through him and was VERY happy with the way he did buisness. Good communication and very fast delivery on the wheels. Again here is a picture of my "overpriced hunk of whitemetal made in China" wheels -
Hey guys, Wanted to toss this out in the fabrication section. Ive been searching for aluminum bends for my I/C setup. I ended up buying some off ebay like alot of people suggested. They were total crap, they were thin walled and hardcoated silver. Impossible to weld. Anyway after searching a bit i found this website: http://www.globaltecheng.com/ProductCart/pc/viewcat_h.asp?idCategory=65 They have mandrel bent tubing from 1.5"-8" in 6063 aluminum and 304SS at VERY good prices. They appear to be a supplier for a few online "racing sites." I ordered about 8 bends from them on tuesday and got them on on thursday, they loook great. 2.5" 16ga aluminum bends for 13 bucks!!! W00T. Anyway check em out! -Austin

The stock pistons can withstand alot of "boost" as everyone has mentioned as long as your tune is spot on you will be safe to 20psi more then likely. Although to be honest that prolly isnt going to happen. With stock pistons you slip up once and get alittle detonation and your done. A nice hot day and freak fuel problem, just working out kinks in your setup and you can blow the ring lands. IN MY opinion the stock pistons are practical to 15-18 psi, after that I think forged pistons should be considered.

It was older then that, and had round headlights. It was a convertable and had a flared out rear (stock), I dunno if it had a whaletail or not because the "hood" was off the motor. It was aircooled and it was turbocharged. And it was fast. I think perhaps he ment that it had a 996 engine in it. It looked like this: -

BMW's are kinda quick off hte line but arent much of a highway machine like out turboz's are. Its a good thing you beat him lol, or else you might have some tuning to do. My favorite kill was against a turbo 911 thing, he called it a 996. All I know is it had some wide tires a roll cage and a top mount I/C (had no bonnet over the motor) After walking around my car and checking it out (I didnt pop my hood) he offered to race me for 2,000 dollars on the interstate a second gear roll on. He claimed ot have 600hp. I chuckled and told him I didnt have any money to race (I had 2 bucks in my wallet) but told him i would race him for pride. I was running 15psi at the time. We went out ot race, I had a passenger he did not. Lined em up on the interstate and took off in second. It was a CLOSE race, prolly the best ive ever been in, but I walked away from him pretty hard and won by I would say a good two car lengths. When we got back to hte parking lot he was making all these excusses, but anyway turns out he had put down 460hp to the ground. I was pretty happy with it. -
Reputable body shop in NC? - for roof repair
240hoke replied to Sparks280zt's topic in Body Kits & Paint
Dont pay a body shop to do it if you are gonna cut a skin off a car. Your already doing all your own body work, that what youll be paying most for. Just wait till you get that welder and do it yourself. Ill come over and help. -Austin -
Its an SR But man I cant wait till these are up for sale!

I think it can be made ot work with some extra U-joints but it would take some work. Ill be watching this.

I vote e46 M3, practical, luxurious, and baddass. If you choose to add a turbo well.... Lets just say they put out some SICK numbers. Or wait better yet, pick up a NEW M3, 400hp 4.0L V8...... its gonna be saaawheat I just got an e46 330Ci about a month ago for my daily driver and im loving it so far. Right now my plan is to not touch my 330 (its gonna be hard for me) and start saving for an e46 M3. Here she is: Anyway congrats on the sale and good luck finding another car!

Thanks, thats what I was going for. I got the Idea after seeing some porshe race engines in corky bell's book. That wiring is for the hall sensor down thur on the crank pulley.

Welding the holes shut it really doesnt matter as most that you will want ot plug will not be through holes. The through hole should probably be saved for vaccum sorces unless you plan one doing somehting custom. That being said I had do trouble welding up the holes in my intakeI just used some 4043 rod, make sure everything is nice and clean though. and smooth out the casting a bit.

mine is pretty tucked I jsut have one wire loom coming from the firewall for my EMS. The rest I ran through the kickpanel into the fenderwell. I wanted it to be clean, functional, and easy to get to so I didnt go all out but its a good bit cleaner then stock. Kinda hard to see in this picture but youcan see the tucked loom under the fuel rail and the uncluttered fenders. I hate wiring on the fenders.

I actually think it looks sweet Take a 2" zip disc to an entire z car let it sit for a while and then clear it, would make a sweet sleeper
