  1. As long as the paint is solid that's fine. You don't want bare metal in some places and paint in others though. That will leave waves in the finish. I'd just sand off the clear...
  2. OK, that makes sense. But does that mean it's actually putting a drag on the engine?
  3. I have an '83ZX that needs a heater core and also have an '80 with one. Will it swap?
  4. I think I need a fuel pressure regulator... is an adjustable one worth the money? I plan on IC'ing and upping the boost some day, will it help to be able to adjust the fuel pressure? Where's the best place to buy? Thanks!
  5. At least the first one is easy: why does my boost guage read -7 to 0 to +7? That is, why the -? Why doesn't it go from 0 to 7? Second: I'm having surging probs at about 1,500rpm, it drops to 1,000rpm when I have just a little pressure on the pedal and the boost guage rises to -3 or so. Yet when I really step on it it doesn't surge, it is really smooth! Is this boost related or not?
  6. I want to know how to indent. my gears. Have an '80 with the u-joints on the shafts and it says "1 (then an arrow pointing down) 397" and also one out of an 82 with cv's that I can't remember the numbers on. What do I look for to identify them?
  7. I'm no expert but that sounds good to me. What kind of tranny is it? And how much wear does the engine have? Those two things are critical to how good a deal you're getting.
  8. Congrats man. I do love it when the boost hits. Did you take the AFM off to clean it? I've been having the same problem and noticed the needle bouncing at idle, wasn't sure if it was cause or effect. Hadn't gotten to it since I don't drive it very often.
  9. If you don't want to read much, just read the last paragraph and note the companies listed. www.amsoil.com/articlespr/article_aftermarket_additives.htm I realize there is a certain motivation here and point out in advance that I'm not a dealer or affiliated with Amsoil in any way, although I would like to try their products.
  10. Bring the heat up as much as possible before you paint, (have all your prep. done) kill the heat, paint, as soon as the fumes are gone turn the heaters back on. If it's really cold you won't be able to paint the entire car that way, it will require stages. You will need a faster/hotter thinner for cold weather. Ask the sales rep. Safety first guys, I know of one guy who blew himself up by not using a good safety light, he bumped it, it broke and the fumes ignited...
  11. Where's the deals out there? Point the way to a website if you have any... or should I get one from a junkyard and build it up? I want to run 12's with a 6 speed trans. in an 80 zx. SBC of course... Pls help an ignoramus!
  12. Is there a compound you find effective or is this just gonna take alot of elbow grease? Is there some kind of pad that can be put on a buffer/grinder.
  13. What's it out of and how much are you asking? Oops, just realized where you are. Prob. not worth driving for... but sounds like you've got a sweet setup going! Post a pic for us.
  14. I have an '83 ZXT which I'm playing with now and enjoying very much. Hope to ic and up the boost later. But I just bought the '81 and it has no motor or tranny 'cuz the guy just pulled the 350 out to put in his camaro... Having looked at the evidence, I don't see alot of danger to the planet from exhaust gas. For one thing the same people currently saying that were recently saying cow farts were the most dangerous thing to the ozone. Anyhoo, I can put out some cash for the late model stuff, really just wondering what would give mileage and speed. 24mpg and a 10 sec. 1/4! Now that I like. Where would I find the details on that setup? I'll run a search... wouldn't the cr have to be less than stock to turbo it? What would that entail? Not asking ya to spend a long time typing, just point the way to a website... I like to read. Thanks!
  15. I have an '81 280Z. I want to swap for power yet not get less than 25 mpg. What engine should I go with? 350, 327, Buick 3800 series? I don't know much about it, any help at all would be appreciated.
  16. One more thing to consider is that you can't (cost effectively) coat the inside of the tubing. The channel will be easier to paint completely. It's inevitable that moisture gets trapped inside tubing.
  17. Darthmentos, is it an automatic or manual? N/A or turbo? And how good is the body?
  18. Hmmm, you guys seem to be talking about using propane INSTEAD of gas. I've read some about fogging the intake with propane but still using gas/diesel. I have a 7.3 diesel F350 that I am considering doing that to as they say that it gives 100 hp and even more torque than that. Seems like it might be more tricky with turbos but why couldn't it be done?
  19. Is the '85 300z n/a automatic a good way to go to convert? Is there any particular year/model to go with? I know the 70-72 means no emissions and it's lighter, but is there any thing particularly wrong with the '85 model? And how hard would it be to go to a manual tranny? I know I should buy the JTR conv. manual but it's just the beginnings of my desire to go sbc so don't want to spend that money yet... Thanks! Oh yeah, don't even have the car yet, it runs good, body is fine, what's a reasonable price?
  20. You could try dry ice, that's what my grandpa always did to fix hail dents.
  21. Was wondering if anybody knows of any good books to teach me how to paint cars. I've been painting oilfield equipment for years now but need to learn bodywork mostly. If you don't know I guess I'll have to go to work for a body shop... pls. save me!
  22. No, I'm not sure... that's why I'm asking. Thanks. I'll look into it.
  23. 83 zxt with an L28. It surges at low rpm, so far since I got the car I've replaced the fuel injectors, spark plugs/wires and the fuel pump/filter. It still surges at high (3800) rpm or more, just very slight. I'm thinking fuel pressure regulator or...?
  24. I once had a 454 that did that, it turned out that the heat interfered with the spark plug wires. How long has it been since you changed them?
  25. Dang it! I knew somebody would say that! Know you've gone and made me feel bad... note the use of past tense "saw" not see. OK, I'll be quicker next time. Back to my question, what's the best to get? I'm in no hurry, just wondering.
