In a low profile 16" inch street tire.. a 245/45/16 is about it.. there are 255/50/16's, and Khumo victoracers make a 265/45/16.. THATS IT!! I've hunted and hunted for YEARS. I run the Khumo 265/45/16's.. they will not fit with stock fenders...not even sure if they will go with coilovers in a stock fender. I gave up myself. I'm buying 17's.. custom. And no.. my rims are not for sale till the 17's are on the car... BTW I've had offers of $1000+ for my Epsilon 16x9 and 16x7 mesh 3 piece rims. Pretty rare as well these days.

Actually that front rad support is VERY important. I completely removed mine during the lengthy process of installing my VG30ET into my 280Z. I have a 12 point cage in the car, and when the car was on the hoist, we cut the top rad support on either side of the car and removed the middle approx 25" of centre section. This was going to be rewelded in after, and was done to speed up all the trial fits of the engine in the car. When the car was set on its own wheels (still on hoist, but the car sitting on its own weight on the wheels, that front rad support could not be placed back in...the front of the car twisted inboard almost a 1/4" and would not allow the insertion of the rad support.... with the car raised back on the hoist, the middle support easily fit back in place...with obvious space left..(from material cut away with hacksaw blade) SOOO when we reinstalled the support, I too needed clearance for my 2.5" dia i/c pipes. I also cut away engough clearance on either side of the rad support. Now knowing the effects of the lack of rad support, we reinstalled it, and added 2, 1" dia square tubing top and bottom accross the rad support to give it extra strength(infront of rad support, so stock rad could be attached as normal) Additional plates on the top corners of the rad support were added, as well as a large X brace, to make up for my loss of my strut tower bar. (clearace around engine issue) X goes from the outboard most end of each rad support, and attaches diagonally to the other side of the car on the strut tower. Just something to consider if you really take alot of the "webbing" sheet metal that gives that support attach points to the fenders. It is more important than you think. It is not just a rad support... it works just like a strut tower brace, and keeps the front of the car from flexing inboard and outboard.

I'm just blown away by itthis morning.. been watching the news since 10am. I will NEVER forget witnessesing the Challenger explode during liftoff, and I will NEVER forget the Columbia. The Columbia was the first space shuttle I ever saw at the Cape Kennedy Space Centre during one of many visits my family made to the centre. Space travel is dangerous, and I hope they don't let this stop the progress of man in space. My thoughts and prayers to the crew and their families.

As I like to say " I'm part of the newly single group again" I know what you mean about thinking of "what if's", and dredging up the past. It can kill you. I try hard to not look back.. what is done is done now. Now I have no kids, but I would not wish a divorce..let alone one involving childern on my worst enemy... that is how bad divorce can be. Funny how people see connections in movies, but hey some movies do make a point. I actually learned something from the movie "Cast Away" Starting over and not giving up. Life is good, keep breathing, and you'll eventually learn to look ahead, and not back. At 32yrs old, I too am in a crossroads of my life, and am not sure where I'll be in 2 years, let alone 10... I'll let you know when I get there.

Hehe as your son gets older...the ballast increases.. better hurry up! Laverne broke out of the bracket eliminations this year with a 13.3 in his supercharged 240, and Manolo managed a 14.6 with slicks. He will be one to watch this year, as he just added a wet nitrous system to his triple weber carb set up, and is running a 75hp shot. Edmarc with his all white 87 300zxt should be the big gun there, if he gets his fuel/ignition set up on time. His goal with his new motor is 600rwhp. While I'm quite tame compared to him, hoping to hit the plus side of 350rwhp this year. Glad to see you still have the Z! I hope to see it on the road again.

What is the loudest BOV on the market?
ZR8ED replied to 1FASTKINGCAB's topic in Turbo / Supercharger
The Turbo XS type H is the loudest I"ve ever heard. That is what I have. Like Really loud!!! think transport truck air brake release.. just louder! My buddy was driving in front of me.. 100ft.. he could hear me shift and let the BOV go off!!! I have a short vid clip of my car on the track (in car) and you can easily hear the BOV. Its 2.08 megs. drop me an email if you want a copy. I love it! every turbo guy around has been totally blown away how it sounds... They can here me down the street as i shift... even before they see me. Scares the crap out of people on the sidewalks....sometimes I love to wait and shift just I pass people.. on the sidewalk or in cars...just to see them jump! hehe -
AS I know it, all Supras have lsds. and they are every bit as bullet proof as our R200's My buddy absolutely beats on his modded 82 Supra, and it has a stock 3.7 lsd. MkIII supras had higher ratios (ie 4.1) etc.. They are about the same size as the r200, but mounting it is the big question....I have not seen one up close for a while, so I can't recall the mounting method. mkII supras do have a rear suspension similar to the Z31's

Hehehe I know that car! He is a member of my Z club! I watched him run a 13.7 with his son in the passenger seat! Car looks better in person. He arrived at our Z fest a few years back, and stopped the show dead...no joke! This is the 240Z with the Jag engine you have undoubtedly heard me talk about over the years. ZR8ED

I made up some templates for the "fences", and other than that, everything I'm planning, is on hold till spring. I don't have access to the car during the winter, so I can't take any other measurements or trial fitting. As it stands, the car still has an exhuast problem unless the windows are fully up, or fully down. I won't give up on this project er..quest..hehe

85 300zx turbo wiring harness, need some help
ZR8ED replied to warrenp's topic in Miscellaneous Tech
My wire harness is also 86 300zxt automatic. As far as the wireharness goes, the turbo and non turbo harnesses are different. ie knock sensor, speed limiter etc.. so 86 turbo ecu, 86 turbo harness, 87 motor.. all components came from a turbo automatic car. -
85 300zx turbo wiring harness, need some help
ZR8ED replied to warrenp's topic in Miscellaneous Tech
Its not true. I have an 86 turbo automatic ecu running my 87 engine with 5spd.. no probs. -
Hey I like it! I can see the Z in it yes, but I also see some Pantera with that front end, also some TVR inspirations.. (though by the age, it could be the other way around..not too sure) It just needs 400hp, some big flares, much wider tires, change the interior to black....oh...wait a tick....I'm starting to describe what I did to my Z! I've never seen or heard of that Saab before. I owned a late 80's 900 Sport that I loved. Best car in the snow I have ever witnessed!!! Even though it was a bit quirky looking... a real like or hate body style...I liked it..

What about the weight factor? The G tech needs you to put in the weight of your car. Did you get it weighed correctly as tested? Estimating the weight will only get you an idea. Also the calculation the G tech uses to get that HP # makes a lot of assumptions. ie that your car/driveline/suspension/gearing/tires are optimally set up. Another thing to note is to remmember that that # is "road hp" if you use a common driveline loss value of 30%, that will net you 195 at the flywheel.. That gets you much closer.. considering all the assumptions made...

I really like my engine swap and the levels of performance I have achieved. I did it to do something to the car that most would say "impossible" I love being the underdog... it makes succeding much more enjoyable. As far as a recommended solution to "needs" for a z car, this is most definately not the swap to accomplish those goals reasonably. From my somewhat limited "hybriding Z's" experience and thoroghly studying a JTR manual, I would rate this swap as one of the more difficult engine swaps for a Z. Its right up there with engine swaps that neccessitate moving of the firewall, relocating frame rails and suspension components, as well as serious changes to the steering linkages, and suspension geometry. Obviously learning from others mistakes makes a swap much easier, that is why the v8 can be so bullet proof. There are a ton of guys who have done total cheapo butcher jobs on Z's, and just as many who have turned their V8 Z into a masterpeice of technology, looks, as well as excellent handling street and track monsters. Money or pure expertise and mechanical ability can make or break your conversion. Or both if you have neither. I try not to sound too scary to someone thinking about their swap, but I had absolute ton of emails from guys looking for an easy way out when they saw a comparitively available nissan powertrain, that could be dumped into a 1st gen with very respectable performance (stock) with even more potential for performance. Problem is yea its a small powerplant, but it just does not fit well in the Z.. all the extra room is in the wrong places. Not to mention next to no one has done this conversion. I have never seen another one, and I have only heard of one in Australia. So there is not much help out there to learn from mistakes made... Sorry to kinda change the topic a bit. I just wanted to answer your Q about feasability of my swap for your car. Thanks, Scott.

It sure is important to really look at what you want from your z. How much you are willing to spend to build it, and even more importantly fix/repair/maintain it after that initial outlay of money. Lots of budget swaps out there...its a whole other ball game to maintain these cars...as well WHO is going to work on it? YOU or are you gonna pay some joe blow mechanic who may understand Datsuns, but may know jackall about your modded hybrid. I thought I had all the answers years ago with my Z. And then my life changed, priorities changed, and what I was willing to live with changed, and found out that my high revving L28 was modded just a little too far out there to drive and enjoy daily..and I actually started to drive it less and less!!! I've since been on a quest to make the car more what I need instead of what I thought I might want. I chose an uncommon engine swap, for many different reasons, and money did have a factor (allbeit a small one) I think I have the car the way I want it now.. reliable enough to drive around daily. Good enough on gas to make me not have to think seriously about gas costs when driving to a long distance car event. Quiet interior and comfortable enough to take ladies out on a date with. Hot looks to boost my ego and all the hp I need with minimal lag of my turbo. In its old form, it had no carpets, no stereo, no heat, very noisy exhaust... not exactly a date car to say the least. Lots of fun on the track, and if it got a small scratch, I didn't cry over it. Didn't drive it much because of the noise, low ground clearance, gas costs, no stereo for long drives. not comfortable to drive in for long periods, and looked better 20/20 than standing still on display in a parking lot. Things change, people change, and it cost me a small fortune to change my car to how I needed it. Now this all has slowly happened over the last 14 years I've had this car. Think it over, and don't let money make all the decisions, check out other Z's and see what you think of them. Brute cheap hp will not make you happy if you require smooth refined power. If you want to do something just to be different, be aware of the costs of a one off. (money, driveablilty, enjoyment, maintenance etc..) Not trying to sound preachy, just giving my .02 cents worth of "living the Z life" experience. Good luck with your decision. Your in the right place to hear many different "Z life experiences"

I've always wondered the same thing. Lots of L28 turbo guys upgrade to the merkur injectors (370cc) as a starting point....but 84-89 300zxt injectors do fit. (330cc I'm pretty sure) Lots of 300zxt in the junkyards these days, I'm sure they are more plentiful than some of the other injectors people stuff into their Z's. I have a friend who ran the 300zxt injectors in a modded N/A 77 L28, and they ran a bit rich for him, but they did work...I'm sure they would be more than enough for a modestly boosted L28. I ran as much as 18psi on my T3 (VG30ET)with stock injectors, and never saw my air/fuel monitor read lean. Maybe some of the L28 turbo guys who like experiments, can try them out... might be another option for turbo guys. I have 3 VG30ET motors as backups..

Ya might have a better shot at an Altima 3.5 engine and just find a 350Z tranny...and no you can't have my Altima engine Beautiful engine. Very smooth...pulls almost like a turbo when the cams come in...sure surpises my friends when they go for a spin. "And its a 4 door?!!!!!"

Whoops forgot to answer the q about diffs. 240's generally had 4spd with 3.36 R180's 280's generally had 5spds with 3.54 R200's 280zx's had r200's with 3.9's 300zxt 87-88 had lsd R200 with 3.7's The info above is not the be all end all.. some models like 2+2 had other diffs, some 280's still ran 4 spds, early turbo cars ran 3.54's etc.... 3.36 3.54 3.7 3.9 were most common ratios in Z's you'll hear of other ratios from cars like the 200sx turbo 84-86 had 4.11's. Other ratio's are avail, but I don't have the info handy Some very stiff springs are going to be needed up front. Not sure what rates you may need for that kinda weight of an engine. I'm sure someone here has more suspension info regarding large engine swaps.
-
Well I know a stock R200 will more than handle that amount of power. A lsd out of an 87-88 300zxt will help put the power down better. You have much more to worry about with the front. There is a guy in my Z club who dropped in a Jag V12 and watched him run high 13's in the 1/4 with no problems. It goes well in a straight line, but that is about it. He originally had a 360 V8 mopar bored to 383 that was much faster. He did the swap just for the look as well. Well he'll be the first to admit the car now handles like a pig, and needed some serious mods to the front end to take the weight. Mods to the firewall are necessary if you want any resemblance of good handling to get that weight back as far as possible. Good luck with the project. Are you going to go with the 6spd with the conversion?..

Hahaha I read it for about 9 pages worth till I was locked out because of maxing out their bandwidth from readers of that thread!! hehehe Nothing like comparing a car made in the mid to late 80's compared to a car built in the 70's! Funny to read all the childish flames..imagine having to sift through that crap at this site while looking for good info? I've only met 1 Fiero I could not beat...and he was heavily modded.. ahh... but I have had my ass handed to me more than once by a Z car... Hey everyone can't know the secrets of the Z... then everyone will want one...

Lookin for rim opinion. Please help
ZR8ED replied to ZR8ED's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
Yea I think your right. The 15's are wide enough, but you make a good point about the dia... I need all the ratio I can get, to keep load on the engine. I don't want to (increase numerically) my ratio at all. Cool.. perspective.. thats what I needed. The plan remains.. custom 17's it will be.. Anyone want some 15" rims? I have a good line on some. Thanks guys! -
I have been planning to purchase a custom set of 17x11 rims for my z. Price aprox $480 each. No problems I know they fit.. been saving last little while to buy them.. Now the other day, a kind of a deal was presented to me (I have feelers out looking for used rims for me) I can get my hands on a set of 15x12 and 15x9 centrelines.. bolt on, correct offset to fit my Z. Finding 15" performance rubber in wide widths is not easy, but I have found rubber to fit these rims. The opinion I need is, is it worth the switch to go back to a 15" rim again? I already have 16's on the car and only want to switch rims to fit wider tires under the back of the car. the 15's will get me there.. but so will the 17's. The 17's are pushing my max diameter to within a few tenths of an inch. the 15's will get me back to where I used to be. I am currently using a 25.5 inch dia tire, 17's will take me to a hair under 26 inches, and the 15's will get me a hair under 25 inches in dia. I don't know what to do for the long term.. the 15's are a beautiful rim, and suit the look of my car.. AHHHHH I'm so confused. Decisions decisions...?? I'd like to make an intelligent decision, not an emotional one... oh and the price of the 15's with decent condition tires is going to end up in the neighbourhood of 2 custom rims. Help...

OUch is what I Say! Nothing like learning to drive in a $100k sports car... Will people ever learn to drive well first..then move into highpowered cars. You can have just as much fun with a stocko civic on a tight track, and push the car to its limits..then work your way slowly past the cars limits as your skill exceeds the cars. Live and learn...

Ever see the SHO shoved into the rear of a Ford Festiva? they called it the Shogun. Huge flares.. a $50K "kit" it outhandled and out accelerated a Ferrari Testarossa. A guy with the Oshawa Motorsports Club owned one. I saw him tear up an autoX event at a Trent University parking lot... must have whipped my Z by 10 sec/lap... wicked fast! Gotta love those wild hybridz.
