  1. Yeah he's right you realy should remove everything like the actual bucket, trim, headlights and markers before stripping, you'll save a lot of work, and you'll need to remove them anyway, as much as you can remove the better. It would be a good idea to take off those fenders and see what you've got underneath. not to mention you'll need them all off when you do your painting. Look in the paint and bodywork sections on here and read through the stickies. you'll get a lot of good advice and hopefully save a lot of time and $. ooh looks like there's a bit of rust under that bondo. it's not suprising to see bondo's spots on these cars. afterall there's 35 years+ of use and love given to these machines. You'll need to get a sander and sand back approx 3-5" around that area to see how far the rust has travelled under the paint. If you're stripping the whole car then this won't be a big deal, though the bondo'd area will have to fully be redone. What kind of stripper are you using? Some strippers require a lot of cleanup before you get to the primering. (some strippers you prime with a 10$ bill hehehe) Phar
  2. Wow, sounds like a case of Auto-depression. Hey buck up, little camper, it's not so bad. I think you should hold onto your motor, and later plan on putting it in. There's nothing worse than having one, then getting rid of it, then finding out you can't easilly get another one for anywhere close to what you sold the old one for or in as similar condition. besides you've waited this long... I totally understand the cash flow issues. (my wife doesn't understand why I want to spend $$$ to fix up a 30 yr old S30, when I have a perfectly good Z32 I drive everyday, not to mention the amount I still need to spend to make it a happy S30) Maybe you just need to focus a little more. Take a step back, look at the car, and the engine not as a whole, but as a series of little projects that each lead into another. Maybe make a list, a point to get started with that you can do without a lot of costs, just time spent. Then go from there to the next step and so on. It'll give you a sense of accomplishment and progress when you're crossing stuff off the list. before you know it you'll have that turbo installed and cookin' down the highway. Though you might put the headlights a little higher on the list. Phar
  3. Wow, yeah I'll say you got lucky on that one. unfortunately it's hard to say exactly what happened. just be glad there's no apparent block damage. you might still drop the pan and pop that piston out to inspect the rings and rod. Its entirely possible they might have cracks, or have metal lodged in them which could score your cylinder walls. The piston itself, aside from the valve mar still looks good. I think you're a lucky ducky it wasn't worse. good luck. Phar
  4. Hehe, yeah okay I agree, Gene Kranz, is still the face of Nasa even this long after, though you could have said it's about a great bunch of guys who accomplished the impossible. if you think about what they did, they were pretty amazing in all they had to do and time perfectly when all they had were slide rules and nixie tube calculators. Last time I was in FL we went to see Nasa, n there were still some of the old guys who were actually there, for the programs, giving tours. That says something, Either they love Nasa and space, or Nasa has a crappy retirement program. Man, we might have to have Derek's name changed again. I'm liking The Horny Hero better than that Horny Z guy. Well today's another day maybe he'll get it started today. I'm worried about the under manifold heat possibilities, but I think everything else looks great. Are you timing your MS off your same EDIS wheel? Oh, Your surge tank is mounted vertically right?? Horizontal could be bad. I'm an expert at stating the obvious, I know. Phar
  5. So What's the top Speed you've hit in it so far? Phar
  6. What was the top speed you've hit in it so far? Phar
  7. Oh wow it's tomorrow already. Did you take today off to work on it? I've been waiting long hours for this day. How long has it been since you started? It's very impressive when you think about the amount of work you've actually accomplished. That Surge tank looks awesome, Are you expecting someone to be shooting at it? It looks like it's bulletproof. n your welds, well they're a lot better than mine so don't worry about it. Very nice work as usual. We're all waiting for you to turn the key... Oh, we could see those girls really dug you, you're That Horney Z Guy. Good luck, here's hoping for a smooth startup and operation. I'm sure Daeron didn't mean anything by posting APOLLO 13!!!!?!?! Phar
  8. Oooh Whoa! that's a lot of $ for a heavy engine. You really should look into an aluminum LS Engine. they're light, Fuel injected and pretty easy to install. Tons of power. look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GM_LS_engine and read in the V8 forums on here. you'll find a ton of info. You might also look at some of the ford mustang engines an old 5.0L from like 94' also provides EFI and a good amount of power. Though a lot of these V8's will have trouble keeping up with a Nissan VQ35 engine. Read on some of those swaps, particularly 240Hoke's http://www.vq240z.com-a.googlepages.com/ 240Z. My 78' 280Z will be similar, though I'm using a VQ35HR engine, but these guys did amazing work and paved the road so to speak on this swap. 300HP in super light weight. good mileage based on the weight of your foot. In the end it's your choice what to put in, you can spend a little or a lot, just make sure you know a lot about what you're getting into before you start buying parts. You might also look at this guys' site on how a restore should really be done, if we all had the time and $... http://toni.dnsf.org/260Z. These guys have threads on here for thier builds, just use the search and READ a lot. I mean it, READ a lot, you'll learn sooo much.
  9. because my tranny didn't come with a shifter, and they're harder to find. I haven't checked yet what the dealer charges...
  10. I couldn't tell ya, but yeah making an inverting circuit may be an idea, a flip-flop and a few more parts, but if that's the case then why not paint it optically and use a ir/sensor to read the "stripes" painted on the stock dampener. uh yeah.. cept maybe for dirt... if I had a lathe I could concievably make my own, but that's no fun for Derek. Phar
  11. Yeah, I think they'll work in the HR Trannies. I compared mine to a DE tranny and they look identical. So you're good there. I need to get a stock shifter to use w/ your shifter bracket. I'm still working on that. I want one of your brackets so put me on the list for one. I'm still months away from install, since I've also got a honey-do list. Do you think your bracket woudl work with an aftermarket Ebay special like this: Just trying to figure, since for some reason stock parts are harder to get. Phar
  12. read through the V8 forums on your V8 swap, they'll give you a lot of insight for engine choices. there's a ton. LS1+ would be nice, but not cheap. Just remember too, as Mr. Miyagi said. "license is not substitute for mind, for heart, or for body". Something like that. It's been years since I saw Karate Kid. Phar. N Hey that'd be cool if you guys want to Join the NMZCC, I'll let you know when we get things more put together.
  13. Wow, Derek, thats really getting sexy... The Alodine finish really looks good. I have no idea why I ever suggested billet for the Thermo housing. it looks awesome just cleaned up. very very nice. So, didn't we have a good discussion on head shields about 14 pages back? I seem to remember us all talking about something there. Better to put something in before you get to the "what's that smell?" phase. I really like how you drilled and ran your injector leads underneath. That must have taken some time. What heat resistant sheathing are you using on those wires? A melted wire could be bad if it's a ground, since both MS and bosch use grounds to complete the injector circuit, if one melts, you could end up w/ an injector stuck in an on state = very rich and flooding. your upward tilt (4deg?) should push that flow into the engine, but I don't think it would be a good situation. I know I didn't have to mention this, I'm just backing up my vote for a heat shield. still looks pretty amazing... uh don't forget to reinstall those rocker cover bolts. Oh and what's is that bottom bung on the horn of #6 for? You're going elect fan? Let me know what you find, I'm probably going with an electric fan on my S30 too. Phar
  14. Yeah I think we all must have had that in our eyes. Sucks too cuz usually you've got greasy hands when you're using it. "Where's the F**k'in Clean rags!!!" yeah... been there. So that's interresting about the undercoating, is that stock coating it ate through or some aftermarket. I'll be needing to do some stripping of my undercoating, n this might be good for degreasing underneath at the same time Phar
  15. Yeah I could believe it. I would assume they meant you started with a pristine S30. if I had the $$$$ and the to do that to my Z I might consider it. I know I don't have the skill. Phar
  16. Wow, I'm glad my wife doesn't drive like that, She'd never get near my Z! probably wouldn't have married her. So I thought the truck driving into the frozen pond was classic justice. it looked like a lot, I gotta give them that.
  17. I recieved my Tranny yesterday. it looks like a 32 tooth output shaft, I can't find my calipers for output diameter measurement.
  18. 14 mo, but yeah. pretty impressive. I wonder what his can can do on the track, 1/4 mi? I agree he needs to triangulate the upper hoop. Almost makes me want to try to build one. I wonder if a VQ w/ a FWD tranny (maxima?) would work, of course rear mounted??
  19. Sadly, no, it needs to be the inverse so its reading the spaces. at least I think that's what it's doing. lets look at a GM flywheel. See, it's also got the notches out of it. so basically cutting off a few teeth might work, but I think it could confuse things. I have a timing diagram in PDF, but that's a little more work than needed. I just need Derek to say he can make an alternate ring for his EDIS adaptor, then give a price, and I'll say ooh! okay, I'm interrested. Though I may not really need one since I'm putting in a VQ.. Phar
  20. Okay, yeah I know yours is for EDIS, but I think with a different wheel it could be adapted to fit a GM Sequential EFI system. All I'd need to figure is Cam Position sensor, and that might not be that hard. That "mopar performance balancer" is for a Jeep 4.0L EFI system. The CPS reads the 12 notches to tell which cylinder is on intake and exhaust and thus when to fire each injector. I'm not trying to threadjack tho, my thread on Mopar EFI on a Z is here: http://forums.hybridz.org/showthread.php?t=135946. Now getting you back to your manifold. How's that going? You've got all your Megasquirt parts already right? So can you make your adapter for the L28 dampener like this: But with only 12 notches like the mopar balancer I poster earlier? Phar
  21. I bought one of the Ebay kits, hopefully I won't have trouble, since it's not installed since I'm not quite to even the painting portion of my build. looks like it has all the pieces I need though. Phar
  22. that's pretty cool, but I thought the Atoms were made mostly from Titanium and aircraft aluminum. I wonder how fast his goes, n he really needs to wear a helmet. Phar
  23. Daeron's got a great idea there w/ the brake cleaner. that stuff is awesome for cleaning out oily crap in workings, or anywhere else you have oil and don't want it. I would go back to the graphite rather than oil again unless you want the dust in there to solidify again. I've degreased an entire engine with that stuff. only precautions I'd warn you of, is 1 it's flamable, duh!, and 2 it's messy, spatters everywhere.. so expect to be cleaning up. Let us know if that works. it might keep me from having to pull the latches on my Z Phar
  24. I was talking about a ring that would fit on your dampener that had marks liek this, rather than 36... See This dampener has only 12 notches out of it. I think the timing mark is about 35 degrees from the crankshaft key, but I would need to verify this. real similar to DJ's rear view pict. phar
  25. Oh? Nice, SR20DET, Which tranny is that? 5 speed? Is it simlar to the Z32 tranny? Frontier, 4.0L do you know which tranny that is? I wonder if it'll fit the CD010(cd0009) trannys from 350Z? Does anyone know the Output shaft specs? Splines? Yoke diameter, outside/inside? length? I'd be suprised if the 280Z yoke fit straight up. the 350z is almost 2x the HP of the L28. Phar
