I think what these guys are saying is that we all have a different perspective on our cars and that you need to search to find what will meet your needs. Swapping to a turbo sounds easy and is but are you sure your chasis can handle more hp ? And are you throwing a 200,000 mile engine in and expecting greater hp ? You need to figure out your budget and your expectations. There are problems like the steering box of your zx will be right beside your turbo, heating it and limiting options of upgrading the turbo. Fuel pump, wiring harness and cpu, exhaust, will need to come from donor car. If you have a turbo motor from an automatic you will need to change flywheel. Good luck on your project. FYI I built a l28et last year and spent many $'s and hrs on it, to find out when I went to do the swap that the battery had overcharge once and all the acid had eaten the frame rail where it meets the pass. floor. I could of turn the car into a prettzel with the hp I am putting into her.

Anyone know if manual gearboxes came in more than recirculating ball? That giant gearbox would interfere with my turbo for sure. Anyone have the seats out of there z right now??
islanddozer replied to starfishdata's topic in Interior
I have an 81 with the seats out. I will take measurements if you like. I put seats from a 1999 acura in mine. saved over 20 lbs and really comfy. Used the tracks from the original and modified to fit. Give me a day or 2 and if you haven't heard from me remind me -
Scanned white guages for 280zx and turbo
islanddozer replied to islanddozer's topic in S130 Series - 280ZX
Hey, "opinions are like assholes, we all have one" LOL These are just the scanned guages. I have customized mine and I am quite stoked to get it all together. Realize I have owned this car for 20 years and I am restoring her but want every piece to be customized. Been replacing floors and rails and haven't had the time to get to the dash yet but should be soon. -
Well let that be a lesson to us all, don't believe everything you see on the internet. That EGR tube can be found on any model with the l28. Maximas and Z's from 79-83. These models came in standard and auto. I believe the turbo models only came in Auto but after reading many threads on here I am starting to question that. Front part of my Haynes manual shows how to read your VIN #. The fourth from the end letter shows the country code U = us N = Canada Hope this helps

Scanned white guages for 280zx and turbo
islanddozer replied to islanddozer's topic in S130 Series - 280ZX
I have a high end laser printer (work) and planned on low gloss photo paper . been trying different glues and it seems the glue stick is the best -
I have a 1980 zx and have owned it since 1992. I bought it with 75,000kms on her. I took it off the road last year because I rebuilt a turbo l28 and was going to slap her in there. I had over 450,000kms and thought it would be time to give some love back to her. After spending hundreds of hours porting, polishing, cleaning and assembling the motor I started to strip the engine compartment and front end. I found the frame rails need extensive work and the floors were gone. Watch your battery for spilling on the frame rail. After 6 months of repairing the problems I am getting close to getting the car back inshape. I thought I would never see her go back together because I thought she was too far gone to put that 350hp turbo motor back in her. I love this car and that is coming from a guy who has 2 fullsize chevy trucks in my driveway. I have owned a mess of muscle cars. Chevelles, mailbu, cutlass and found that there is more fun out there than driving in a straight line fast. No muscle car has independent suspension, 4 wheel discs and best tourque to wieght displacement on the market at its time. I always look forward to taking off the tops and getting out of town. Always could find some guy in a new or old Mustang who wanted to let loose at the light. I have made many Mustang owners shake their heads in astonishment that they were beaten (easily) with a 30 year old Datsun. Put them into the corners and they could be placed in the rear view mirror quickly. And that without this new turbo motor. I have owned this car for 17 years so I know I am biased. I have done a fair bit to this car to keep her running. Still original drivetrain and never removed. Most done was rebuilt head. Biggest pet peeves = electrical, heater and the god-dam seam sealer they used. New car gets a wiring harness built by me. Seams are all redone and the heater/ac is gone. You asked why we love our cars and I thought I would share my expierence. Build your garage and dedicate 2 hours (which I know you couch surf durring) 3 days a week. Its amazing how quickly things start to come together.

try cigarette lighter wire and install a in-line fuse.

I think he was talking about the windshield adhesive. There is mobile glass installers who go between car dealers. They are usally under $100. If you screw up your new windshield it will cost $400. Spending $200 is better than $400 and $100 to install. I have removed them but I bought the right tools to do so. I found that the rust doesn't appear under the windshield but arround. Your car may be different. How about a couple of pics where you are expierencing your problem.

Help with optical slip ring (steering wheel)
islanddozer replied to islanddozer's topic in Z31 Series - 300ZX
Hey thanks guys. I took it apart and there was a broken wire under the cover at the slip ring. Wire is too small and needs to be resoldered. Took part in to electronics guy for $50. Dealer wanted $450 before tax and a 4 month wait Thanks again -
I use liquid electrical tape. works very well on the old connectors.

Thought to be a leaking (NEW) windshield, but..
islanddozer replied to LiveFree369's topic in S130 Series - 280ZX
Look at my post on this thread http://forums.hybridz.org/showthread.php?t=148631 I am rebuilding my 1980 280zx and and have found some bad engineering arround the windshield. The panels are placed in a bad angle for rain run-off. Any roofer knows to lay shingles over to allow water run-off over the shingles. Too bad the nissan engineers didn't spend a summer roofing lol. Plus that horrible seam sealer they used is so porous. I finnished those areas but haven't updated the pics. Just used pf214 (Pro-form firm and flex premium rubber based sealer). Comes in a caulking tube. The most important thing is to remove as much rust as possible and use a self-etch primmer. I spent hours with a small pick getting into seams and hard to reach areas. it will keep your ride intact good luck -
Question: For a 280ZX NA, do I need to use a cherry picker or can I use a jack with blocks of wood on the oil pan, for instance? Will I need to undo the transmission mounts to get the angle on the engine? ya 2x4 under oil pan and bottle jack is fine and no need to split tranny. doesn't need to be raised very high. just enough to take weight off plus a 1/2" to get new part in Good luck
