Carb adapters, missed bOres and proper air flow
datsunlover replied to a topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
My engine builder friend is going to do something similar (ford engine, but basicaly the same issue) and he's thinking about just hoging some material out of there, and basicaly 'port matching' the intake to the carb. IMO it would work.. -
I think you'll find out for sure if you search... Not sure on the crank, but IIRC the turbo rods are a diffrent length, and thicker too for added strength.. Me I'd use the turbo rods.. it'd suck to throw one at a few K miles and have to rebuild the motor AGAIN.

yup.. would not suprise me to see somethng like that for around the $12K mark.. I wouldn't pay it though. I'm the guy that would rather buy a $2000 STOCK vehicle and mod/build it up myself. Not that it looks like a hack job or anything, but evryone has their own tastes and I would do few things difrently, or not at all.. I had an '85 rx7 V8 coversion I was trying to sell a few years back; I had over $5000 into it, no one wanted to drop even $1000 on it.. Like Mikelly said.. subjective.

Isn't the purpose of the fins to help cooling of the dif? From what I understand, the LSD creates more heat/friction than a typical 'open' diff, so it makes sence it would need the fins..

Heh.. -15 BEFORE wind chill. It was cold in that open lot last night, the wind was just screaming across it! But dam.. you gys really get it out there!

So it's winter here in Canada.. and tonite was just your average night; 15 below, snowing like a bugger, I'm working late.. yada yad.. Anyway.. I'm heading home and as I go over a bridge, I look off to the right and see a car in the middle of a parking lot. (this is a dirt lot next to a river.. boad launch/docks in the summer time) I see the reverse lights going on and off, so I figure they're stuck. I turn around and head back to help out... Holy monkey this guy is IN there!! Must have been 10" of thick heavy snow. And he was easily 75 feet from the main plowed road. He drove in and then thought it wasn't a good place to park, but when he reversed his Neon just sunk and sat on the frame. Just a FYI.. old Neons suck! No place to attach a chain properly! We ended up attaching a rope to the rear suspension arms, and after some swearing and cursing, I pulled him out. (I love 4x4.. I will never be without one now!) I noticed a lot of clothing/blankets/stuff in the car, but didn't say anything.. After he was out on the road again, he started telling me he's 'had a hard time lately.. evrything went for a crap in his life, and he's down to living in his car for now. Even thats going.. AC quit half way through the summer, and now the heater don't work so good.." He thanked me about 10 times, and gives me $20!! I didn't want to take his last $20 and told him so, but he wouldn't take it back!! Said he had some left and he'd be ok.. So.. do I feel bad now or what?

Ahem... you see why I was saying the AWD system from an audi? No transfer case 'bulging out' or offset front driveshaft/axle/ect.. From what I've seen, I think it'd fit in the stock chasis of a Z car with very little moification needed. I just saw a '91 Audi 90 quatro for sale for $800 (engine not running) and thought about this thread this afternoon.. Wish I had the $$$ to play around with this, caus I also have a line on a 260Z "in need of rust repair" I'm sure a V8 could be made to work/adapted to the Audi tranny, and the front struts/hubs/axles made to fit in the Z front end..

What's the spare tire worth?
datsunlover replied to a topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
What are thay worth... I guess about 20 pounds or so.. Really, unless someone is doing a complete (Ie; picky and oem correct) restoration and NEEDS it, I don't think it'd fetch much $$.. -
Ahem.. how much are you looking to get for it? As for shipping, I'd go with the bubble wrap and cardboard over it. any 'high' points will be the first spots to get smucked so I'd lay it thick on there.. Maybe a few layers of cardboard over the whole thing in the end...

As far as my idea of a 'fun car' well.. it's my Z! Mind you better brakes and suspension are in order.. and a bit more power under foot... all in time though. I love to drive it, gives me 'that smile' every time I get in.. and mash the throttle.. It's not great on fuel, but I don't care. I always say "if I was woried about fuel milage, I'd drive a honda civic. "Fun" is the ONLY reason I bought my Z. To enjoy working on and driving it. I've given up trying to have 'the fastest car' cause there is ALWAY's a faster car, and always a nicer looking one. Idealy, I'd want.. what I have, but with a stronger/more original chasis and body (Ie; less rotten than when I got it) and a FI turbo engine w/5 gear.. Meh.. I'm just happy to HAVE my Z, and I can continue to build/mod it. I don't think I could go out and buy a car (for this type of purpose) and NOT mod it..

IIRC.. isn't there a particular year stock exhast manifold that flows close to or as good as a header? I guess in the end a header will have a bigger impact on power levels, but also increase noise and heat.. not to mention cost.
-
Actually, thats what I had in mind.. I got to thinking two would probly look silly unless they were at either side, and I have no desire to mod/move my tank right now just to fit exhast so....
-
"What a stupid question." That is what someone told me (not here) when I asked the same thing a few years back.. I figured it might be workable, but had no idea the amount of air you have to get into the intake to increase power.. like a super or turbo charger does. I had an audi turbo a while back, and it had a fan like that as well.. actually, looks a LOT like that e-bay 'scam'.. And it had duct work to blow cool air on the injectors. Same as my 280zx. It's funny, a friend of mine asked me the other day what I thought of electric superchargers.. I tried to explain without laughing that they are pretty much usless... like tits on a man...

I did a quick search, but only found one topic.. and it didn't exactly have the info I'm looking for. Basicaly, I'm wondering if a supertrap will "choke" my 2.8.. ? I'm doing a rebuild w/cam and 2.5 exhast, SU's, ect... and REALLY want to ditch the 'cherry bomb' muffler in the trans tunel. I've decided to go to 2.5" pipe, but what to do for a muffler? Well... A friend of mine has two supertraps he was going to use on a stang, but that project has been scraped. I got to thinking about maybe spliting to a Y at the rear, and having the dual 'traps.. or just one, but I'm not sure yet.. I'm looking for pics of a super trap on a Z with a roll pan (no bumper, no cut out for exhast tip) to get an idea how it would look, if it's even been done.. I had a 'trap on one of my 81 280zx's and liked the sound, but it had FI/fuel problems so I couldn't realy tell if it was 'hurting' perfomance any..

I'm with Dot.. thats what I was thinking..
-
dude.. Let me be the first to say.. SEARCH!! This has been discused.. actually, just recently there was a thread about this.. I think part of the 'mantra' (sp?) of this place is "anything is possible" and awd is definatly doable.. how much $$$ do you want to spend?
-
I'll second that.. My 75 280 would leave two black strips if I launched it hard and straight.. but doing doughuts, or turning a corner quickly at speed, only the one would spin.

I don't have kids (yet.. the girlfriend kep saying she wants a baby.. ugh.. ) but also don't have a house.. I have a good job, and while it will pay more and more over the next few years (machinest apprentiship), it doesn't pay much right now.. I therefore live in an apartment, and have a small space/budget for my Z. It's at the same point as yours roughly.. body/welding done, painted, drivable and road legal.. but basicaly a stock car. I'm getting the engine rebuilt now.. because I want to be able to drive it next year. I'd love to V8 it, but I don't have the resources (financial/space) right now, and I can forsee that in another year or two, I will buy a house.. than most likely have a kid, and will end up.. where you are. I've found that 'the more you make, the more you spend' so really, it's a mater of trying to save a little bit here and there and wait.. It took me a full year to rebuild my Z.. on a budget of about $3000 in the end.. it's worth it IMO though.. also.. please dont delete your account and go over to zcar!!

Oh yah.. I think only the AUTO zx's had an R180 though.. IIRC, all other models used the R200, although ratios changed depending on year and turbo/NA... As for half shafts, I'm pretty sure it's well documented here; there's a C/V shaft swap that is a little stronger than the u-joint shafts. On the driveshaft thing, I don't see why it would matter much which way you did it.. I don't know for sure, but perhaps the chevy driveshaft is stronger?
-
I think a search will give you more exact answers.. And it's sort of a greay area without mor info.. you running an auto or standard? Do you launch it at the 1/4 mile, or tool around town? Either way, I think that is going to eventually break a stock R200 open diff.. it may hold up for a bit.. but in all reality, I think (at that power level) the half shafts are going to blow to bits first..

Project Ideas I'll probly never get to build..
datsunlover replied to datsunlover's topic in Non Tech Board
Yah I know.. I just wana build my own.. Custom evrything, no 'kit' stuff you know? Same for the rest, although I guess thats kind of obvious.. -
I've seen a few 240sx swaps, and the only thing holding ME back from doing something like that is that I'd be a bugger to get past emisions testing here.. Anything 20 years or older is exempt, which is one of the reasons I bouhgt a 75 280z.. its also why I hesitate to mod my 93 king cab.. Cool that theres actually a 'drop in' kit though..
-
I've come to the conclusion that I have too many ideas for 'projects' and will never concievably have the $$$ or place to do them all.. So I thought I'd share a few of them and maybe some people can give me some direction as to "which ones to pick" I figure I could do a few anyway.... Or steal my idea and do it for me! Obviously a V8 Datsun is one I MUST do eventualy, so I'll omit that one.. 1- A 4wd 2 door VW rabit.. probly on a tracker/sidekick frame and driveline, big tires, ect. 2- a mid engine 85' 200sx. 300zx turbo V6, fwd Maxima tranny/suspension/brakes, all basicaly.. in the back seat area. A full wide body kit and conversion of the rear hatch to a flat cover something like a Ferrari perhaps.. 3- early 90's Audi quatro (4 door sleeper), converted to be just rear wheel drive and powerd by a built 302.. maybe S/C.. Quiet exhast, basicaly a stock looking car.. muhahaha.. 4- Nissan king cab (I own this one..it's stock for now..) w/ 4 link rear suspension, big rims, air bags/compressor/valves/ect, shaved evrything, basicaly a show truck.. 5- A street bike with something resembling an F1 car front end atached where the forks are (or.. were..) Basicaly, you'd be sitting in where the front wheel used to be, and in front of you is the wheel/pedels/suspension and two tires on independant suspension. I figure it could be licenced as a 'modified bike' and it wouldn't even have to be that fast to be lots of fun to drive.. I've got some more.. but I figure that'll do for now.. I supose I should start buying loto tickets..

I'm thnking maybe an old Audi Quatro driveline..(don't know about newer ones.. ???) The old 4000/5000/90/100/200 line used a 4 or 5 cly mounted as if the car was rear drive, and the transmition has two equal lenght c/v shafts sticking out of the side of it.. right up by the belhousing, very close to the back of the engine... The 2wd cars just had that, but the 4wd models also had a driveshaft coming out of the tailstock of the tranny. I'm wondering now if it's possible to convert a 2wd to a 4wd.. I bet it's a simple mater of swaping in some parts.... (cars shared same chasis between 2wd and 4wd iirc) I had an 86 5000 turbo and trust me, that 5 gear was tough.. There are plenty of Audi guys pushing 300 boosted horse through them. Hell.. if you could sort out the aweful ECU/electrical system (bugy, hard to troubleshoot, arcaic if you will..) the whole drivetrain would be a cool swap in a Z.. They use a similar rear differential setup as a Z too.. (mounted to the chasis, c/v shafts to wheels) But you'd have to get the 5 gear AND rear diff for the awd to work without breaking stuf.. (correct gear ratios) Yes Audi stuf can be pricy, but I'm sure it'd be easy to find... more so than skyline stuff, and probly cheaper..

IMO as a 'for now' motor, I'd do exactly what you said... Pull just the one head, pop out the one bad rod/piston, and reuse the rings/piston as long as they arn't in rough shape. Yes replacing parts is insurance, and I don't have all the knowlege a lot of folks here have, but it's what I'd do.. Besides..you said you'll be droping in a V8 'down the road' right? I'd try to get this motor back together, and not spend too much time/money on it.
