Shoot.. yah, your right.. it'll just kick it into 'failsafe' or some sort of limp mode.. um.. maybe the spring in the afm is broken? (causing the flap to have no resistance, and totaly messing up the ecu?) Or... a bad injector/FPR? Heh.. maybe its the ugly "black box" issue rearing it's head.. Got a spare dizzy (or box from one)? I'm gona go with that for now..

I don't remember much of a sound (I had wide open 2.5" exhast dumping out either side.. kinda loud.. ) but it would feel like all of a sudden the rear suspension had turned into a solid mounted hunk of steel (for a few seconds) and the ride would get really stiff and jar the teeth out of your head.. In my case, it was a minor annoyance, as the front brakes and suspension were very weak , and the car felt more like it was being pulled by the 4 horsemen of the apocalypse than an internal combustion engine... Took a lot to hang on to it during. ah.. aggresive driving. I must build one again someday...

Hey fellow Ontarian! It's still a long trip for you.. but about 2 hours north of me is a 71 240z (I think the guys still has it..) you could get cheep.. How much work are you looking at doing? The car I know of will need the floors/frame rails done, and an engine/tranny (was hacked into a V8 years ago.. it'd be your call which way to go with it..) as well as a hood.. it has a gaping hole I assume was for the chevy air breather... BUT I also know where there are some parts (like a hood that's THE SAME COLOR, door, 4 speed, rad, front x-member/struts, and a box of misc. parts) for a couple hundred bucks localy.. Sorry to hijack this post.. shoot me a PM if you want some more info. Matt

Yah, I never did it to mine, but had all the info on moding the arms for adjustment in the 1st gen RX7. They are built from pretty thick tube, and IIRC there is an inch (fine I think) tap that will go right in there. basicaly you cut 2-3" out of the tubes, tap, and insert threded rod with nuts/washers. Then you can adjust lenghts and even rear axle alignment. I did notice a little binding during hard cornering at speed, but it did well overall... The things I liked about the 4 link is it doesn't change the pinion angle as it moves through it's travel, and I had next to NO wheel hop on hard launches.
-
Um.. I think that would be a problem.. try cutting the harness back (the covering of course) and see if you can find that wire in there.. The tps needs that wire to read correctly I believe...

If they are the 6 spoke 14" X 6, I *think* you can run a 225/60/14 on them.. they bulge a bit I think though..

Ahhh... I see now.. it was late last night as I read this, and I'd had a few wobly pop.. I had an 85 REX that I put a SBC in, and rigged a chev 10 bolt rear to the stock 4 link/coils. It worked awsome.. but the stock rx7 coils wern't quite enough..

Are you sure your friend has the EXACT same setup? IE; idendical rear diff, and the SAME tranny as you? Also.. how much taller are the tires on his 240? You'd be suprised how much tire size will change things. I WAS running 185/65/14's for a while, and 65 MPH was LOUD.. around 3200 rpm or so.. I changed the rear tires to 195/70/14, and WOW what a diffrence.. Made the car more 'driveable' and droped the revs a LOT on the highway. Something else I just thought of.. the previous owner told you it's an 83 tranny? If you have his number you could call him and find out or sure WHAT the tranny is from...

Oh and dude.. don't double/triple post. Pick a forum, and ask your question ONCE. Don't worry, someone always replys.

Well.. what do you mean by 'resolve'? I turn about 2800 (in my 75 280z) in 4th, but I've got the 3.54 rear diff.. (you do have a 5 gear right?) I'd say you'll have to change the rearend ratio if you wana bring down the rpm at 65 mph.. mind you tire size might be part of the problem.. (does anyone know off hand what the overall hight is on the 205/40/17's?) If there's room, a taller tire will help a bit..

Yah, I had one a few years ago.. "Hello sir; I will like to be buying your 81 datsun 290zx. I would sent you a cheque for sum of $5000, so you may send $2500 to the following adress I am owing moneys to. Please tell me address for to send you the cheque and we can close deal." Yah..

Leafs? You're gona have a bit of a bumpy ride no matter what you do.. Good shocks will help, and traction bars.. I drove my 93 king cab for 2 years lowered; with 2.5" blocks between the springs and axle, and front tortion bars lowered. Used heavy duty shocks as well.. the funny thing is.. (as far as trucks go anyway... well, nissans..) it actually rode BETTER with a bit of weight in the box.

Cool... thanks guys. The guy told me maybe $50 or so.. I figure it's worth that even if I can only use it for parts or somethin.. This guy just bought his first Z, and got a mess of parts with it. Maybe I can trade/swap some stuff with this guy too.. I'm thinkng this head *might* have an aftermarket cam in it.. See..the car this guy bought, I looked at about a month ago. At that point, the original owner told me he had a 75 that was his daily driver, and he had 'built up' a bit over the years... said it ran really good, fast, ect and it was good enough that he fought to get it back from the ins co. when a truck rear-ended him. He then bought this 76, and had plans to fix it up as well.. but he just drove it for a while, then changed his mind, needed cash, whatever (he was kinda funny..) so he put evrything up for sale. The guy who has it now said he got the whole deal for $1000. More than I wanted to pay anyway.. Sooo.. any way to tell if the cam is not stock? (markings/colors/? to look for?) Or is this just a crap shoot? Thanks again.

I use a Loncoln Electric 110V welder, with the flux core wire. I didn't have too much trouble welding sheet metal with it.. I can get the gas kit for it, but where I live I'd have to buy the bottles.. plus the gas kit (regulator/hoses/conection) price, it gets expencive.. I'll stick with flux core for now. And yes you can get some decent welds with it, it just takes some practice. Happy welding man!

Judging from the responces, I don't have to down load it, as I already have it saved.. heh he.. got a folder named "Crash_vids" Some awsome cars in it to.. Can't believe the spin/flip/stand on hood and land on the WHEELS trick that one guy pulled off!

Ok, wondering what to look for/be wary of on a used head (I'm going tomorrow to look at some Z parts.. so need to know quick) It's off the car already, and has N42 stamped on the side, but thats all I know. Story I got, which was given to the owner from the PREVIOUS owner, is that the head came off a good running car that got smashed in the rear. A bunch of parts were pulled (including this head) and set on a shelf. Aside from obvious damage (cracks, broken valves) is there anything I should be looking for that would indicate it's bad/hurt?

can one convert a pedestal grinder to a buffer?
datsunlover replied to 260ZRED's topic in Non Tech Board
Got one at my boss's shop. Looks to me like someone (probly my boss) extanded the axle with a piece of pipe, machined on one end to accept a buffing wheel. I've never used it, but one of the guys used it on a valve cover of his.. turned out reeeeal shiney! Got to make sure the grinder is SECURED well (read; bolted down!) to a base or table. -
Hell I'm living with my girl friend.. and wondering WTF sometimes!! She's ok with me spending $$$ on an old Z though...
-
Doood.. tough spot to be in.. I've been in a similar situation.. (actually.. scarry how close to your story mine is... ) And to tell you the truth, these kind of thoughts never 'go away' but.. trust me man.. be her friend, but don't get involved "like you were" again.. Either she's still 'messed up' (not trying to insult here..) or she might be ussing you as her..ah.. back up plan? You know.. you're always there to fall back on so to speak.. And judging from MY previous experience, and frends of mine who have delt with similar issues, women DO know when they've 'got you' and ARE aware of feelings they bring out in you... but the saying goes.. "Do me wrong once, shame on you; Do me wrong TWICE, shame on ME" Some times.. two people just don't work. Just MHO man.. good luck with this one. Matt

'79 windshield into an '82? Will it fit?
datsunlover replied to JKDGabe's topic in Miscellaneous Tech
Yes. Identical glass. -
I'm not saying Im any kind of expert on SU's, but I plan on tearing mine down this winter (well, next few months anyway.. no money to buy anything for the Z right now, so I might as well do SOMEthing!) Basicaly I want to clean evrything up, and semi restore them.. *maybe* bore them out a bit, I dono yet.. But I can take a bunch of pics along the way, and put something together if there's intrest. Definatly check out the Z therapy site; those guys know their stuf!
-
Yes you do. Seiously, SU's are BASIC man... Can you use a socket set, wrenches and screwdrivers? Then you can dissassemble su's no prob. Buy a can of varsol, clean evrything up (do one carb at a time) and reassemble. (just make sure the piston slides freely up and down when you bolt down the 'dome' on the top.) You'll need a rebuild kit, OR some gasket paper and two 'o' rings. Simple stuf, honestly. Me and a buddy re+re'd mine in 3 hours, and within 20 mins of instaling them, had the car running great.
-
IIRC, there is only one bolt in behind those little 'bumperetts' holding them to the main bumper. You may have to remove the whole bumper to get at then though. I'd assume its the same for the rear, but don't have any expiriance with the rear.. mine was gone when I got my Z.
