By this point, Im 99.9% sure there is NO gas left in them. Considering how rusted they ussualy are, it's no suprise. Even if there is though, drilling a small hole is safe. A friend of mine used to work at a rest shop years ago, and did LOTS of custom stuf like this. They'd drill a hole to let the presure out, then push the shocks all the way in and weld them in that position. I was going to do this with my 280 bumper, but I happened across a 240 bumper cheep so I just put that on. Saves on weight too! (I'm sure the 280 front bumper is 60 pounds at least.. shocks another 15 maybe..)

As awfull as it sounds, the guys got a shot.. I was at a coffe shop this past summer with a bunch of people.. just hanging around, ect. Middle of summer here gets crazy.. big tourist town, cottage country, you know. Lots of NICE cars/boats/bikes rolling around.. and a LOT of 'rice' too.. So we're standing outside, and before my very eyes, this girl I know suddenly does a double take and says "wow.. hey baby! Nice ride..OMFG!!" I look over to see what she's talking about.. A bright yellow 97-98 chev CAVALIER!!!! Big ugly (IMO) body 'kit', 18" rims, 4" exhast tip, blue/flashing lights, thumping stareo, the whole bit. I couldn't believe it.. I give here the dumbfounded look.. She says "what? That's sweet!" Seconds later a late 70's Porsche 911 (porsche red, whale tail.. drooool...) cruises by.. well, more like roars.. (love that exhast note..) and I say "There! THAT is a sweet ride!" She glances at it.. "Ahh.. sounds like the engine's broken.. and it's kind of ugly too..I'm sure that (points at the Cavalier) would KILL that old POS in a race anyway.. Look at it!" OMFG I almost slaped her upside the head.. Point is, a lot of 'girls' are stupid twits that have NO clue.. they like 'shining flashing NEW and fast LOOKING cars. That Del Slow will no doubt catch a few...

Well, if they are really rotten, you don't have to take the tanks off.. just pull side to side, and yank them out.. (yes, THROUGH the rear valance/sheet metal) Salty Canadian winters suck..

Well, you would be someone who knows.. I posted some questions in the 6 cyl forum a while back, about using difrent heads, what choices I had, ect. I searched using my user name, along with terms like "N42" and "will this work" and found 'no matches'.. I know it has to be here, cause I started the thread! I'll have another go at it and see if I can turn it up. Thanks though.

ROFLMAO That's great.. -
Well, I got up today and the sun was shining.. (getting to be rare now..) I had put the Z away last week, after not driving her for at LEAST the 3 weeks before.. Weather has been getting cold.. raning, had snow last week, so winter is not far off. Anyway, I decide.."yah.. one more cruise" Wow.. I love my Z! It took half an hour to warm up at all.. after that, it chuged and fatred and poped for the first 10 miles I drove it.. the thing would sit and shake like it has a SBC with a high lift cam.. "pla PLOP pla PLOP" and rock back and forth. So around mile 11 or so, I mash the throttle in 2nd; I get a huge back fire through the carbs, and then...... WHOO HOO!!! She takes off like a race car! Got an interesting look from the guy beside me in the SUV.. hee hee... She ran GREAT for the next 3 hours! (till I put her in the garage again.. for good this year... I did a few more burnouts, some 4 wheel drifting thorugh back road corners (moslty in 2nd gear.. not really fast, but fun.. and hey, I'm on public roads here! ) The ol' Z'er also managed a solid 110MPH along a stretch of highway, and was going for more.. but I was coming into a town.. Cruising slow is fun though too, just to see the expresions on peoples faces! Was a good day all told... Never thought I'd be driving my Z in the middle of November though!

datsunlover replied to Hugh's topic in Miscellaneous Tech
Heh heh... I thought I had a cruiser after me one night.. turns out it was a ford tempo.. came blazin by me obviously happy that he 'beat' me I rolled up to him at the next light and he gave me a sheepish look and grin.. I smiled back at him and as it turned green, proceded to burn the tires and leave him sitting at the light. Jerk. -
79 zx has flat tops? (edit; one more Q on this 79..)
datsunlover replied to datsunlover's topic in 6 Cylinder Z Forums
Just wondering.. are all the 79/83 FI intakes the same? IE; are the bolt holes that hold to the block in the same place? (I know there are several head designes) What I'm thinking is using my 75' head (stock N42, just freshen'd up, polished cam, ect) on the ZX block...assuming the zx has the flat tops.. Then I could in theory bolt on the zx EFI. My 75 WAS FI, but it.. um, died. I've got good round top SU's on it now, but I drove the car today.. and it didn't want to idle/warm up/ drive withough farting and poping. I thought.. "wow.. fi would be nice right now.. turn key, warm up for a min or two.. and drive away!" Actually, I still have the FI intake and fuel pump from my 75.. and I KNOW that bolts up.. I'd have to change over all the electrics from the zx though.. Now... assuming it would all bolt together (which I think it would..) will the zx EFI be able to handle the N42 head and the jump in C/R? Or will it become.. confused? -
Um.. could it be coming from the rockers? This is another shade tree check; Use a long screwdriver like a stethescope. Put the tip on the rocker (roughly over each cylinder, one at a time) and hole your ear on the handle. You may hear the noise louder in one area.. (possibly on the drivers side in your case) maybe one of the rockers is bad.. And seeing as its more on one side.. are you sure it's not a manifold leaking? Sometimes it can sound like a knock.. (my 93 king cab has esentialy the same 3.0 V6 and has a bad maifold leak on the drivers side.. they arepron to this problem.)
-
Kind of hard to diagnose your particular "knock" but I'd guess maybe a main bearing/rod is going.. Does the knock get louder/change pitch with RPM change? Does the motor shake and vibrate a bit? Does it seam to be on one side or just from 'somewhere' inside the engine block?

Funny thing... Almost all of that could be said about living in northern Canada too..

Best way to lower a 77
datsunlover replied to CarolinaZ's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
I've heard you can just take out the front isolators.. (not using plates) don't know how much it would throw out the camber.. I can't imagine it'd be that much.. -
Well, I'm not sure if this is actually the case, but it seems to me that we've lost a lot of older posts/information over the last while.. site upgrades/issues and the like.. I was trying to find a post that I made a few months back, and couldn't turn it up.. but I KNOW I made it.. Maybe someone that knows could say for sure if the site has lost some of the old posts, and that's why searching fails to turn up any usefull info lately? Or maybe I'm just slipping...

!Widebody! ~1/18th scale 280ZX concept (In Clay) Finished
datsunlover replied to Drftn280zxt's topic in Body Kits & Paint
Very cool man! Personally, I dislike the rear wing (although it would probly DO something besides "look" cool.. I'm sooo sick of big wings on slow front wheelers..) and the front end.. meh.. sticks out a bit far for my tastes (I like the "flat" look of an old school solid air dam with a small opening.) But I LOVE the rest.. The bulged fenders and lowered side skirts really make it look mean.. Build it!! -
79 zx has flat tops? (edit; one more Q on this 79..)
datsunlover replied to datsunlover's topic in 6 Cylinder Z Forums
Ahh.. Alrighy then. Thanks. -
Ok, this is a stupid question maybe.. but I'm gona ask anyway... Some history first.. My ORIGINAL plan, before I decided to go V8, and that fell apart all around me, was to 'freshen' the head on my 280z (N42) and drop it on an 81 ZX block (that suposedly has flat top pistons.. I'm not sure now, as I've heard conflicting statements) BUT: I got rid of that ZX I was gona use to do this, cause I 'thought' I was going V8. Things happen. Life sucks. I got my helmet though... So I've been looking into just rebuilding my 280's motor, buying a 5 speed, ect.. and it's adding up... Looks like it'll be somewhere around $2000 when all is said and done. Anyway, here's where I am now; I might have a line on a running/driving '79 280zx (for a lot less than it would cost to rebuild my 280's motor and get a 5 speed, ect ) My question is; will my plan still work? IE; will this 79 have the flat top pistons in it?

Well sorry, but that guy was a crack pot. The hood and fenders were ok I guess.. passenger door was not bad, but gutted, trany was jamed in 1st gear and I'm pretty sure it was only a 4 gear, and the front struts and crossmember were from a 240.. pretty rusted too. AND to top it off, I asked him what he'd want for me to take the whole lot away, and he figured "well.. a couple hundred would do it.." (I need the little smiley guy smacking the other one) Yah.. I left. Maybe in the spring I'll drop by and take it all away for scrap for him..
-
I have to have a front bumper too.. but heh.. if it's a 240 bumper on a 280, it's alright (the safety inspection guys don't realize bumper difrences too much) I'm using a 71 240 front buper on my 75 280. Roll pan in the rear. Some pics in my album if you wana check them out.. or are you just wanting to go with the 'No bumper at all' look?
-
whoa.. dude.. you'd be suprised how much power you'll pick up by just riping off the smog and swaping to earlier round top SU's! If you have the 3.0 V6 and tranny already, well.. ok then.. be carefull how many projects you take on though! trust me.. things can get out of hand quick! Good luck which ever way you go.
-
Um.. huh? Sorry if this sounds retarded.. but.. vent port on what? The fuel regulator? Could you explain this a little more? I'm confused..
-
http://www.hybridz.org/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=38108 Try looking through this post (just a few posts down actually..) and maybe it'll help you out. I would think a N/A V6 would/could be done similar to a single or twin turbo V6 swap.. actually, probly easier...

Where are the WRX rack threads?
datsunlover replied to zgeezer's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
Dono how often he's on here these days, but you could try PM'ing a member here by the name of DOT... (He's the Jag V12 in a 240z guy), and I think it was his post you are refering to. Hope this helps! -
Well, as for the SU's I would think some bigger ones (like from a Jag perhaps?) would solve any fuel 'starving' issues.. But a custom intake is definatly going to be needed.. I think the old buick GN's used a 'suck through' system as well (someone correct me if i'm wrong) where the turbo boost gets routed through a 'port' on the intake, under the 4bbl carb, sucking fuel through.. (I could be off on that though..) maybe the stock Z intake could be modified to accept something like this.. but I'm sure I read somewhere about being able to 'presurize' the SU's and run a 'blow through' system...
