  1. Yah.. arn't most of the r200's 3.54 as well? I'll have to wait and see if I get this 71 anyway..(evrything right now hinges on me selling a vehicle to gather some funds) .. the guy selling it said 'ther's like a posi in the rear or somethin..' Um.. yah.. Have to keep in mind the guy selling it did NOT build it; it was a friend of his.. who I have yet to actually talk to. Car is still in the other guys name too.. Hopefully it'll work out this week.. I'm getting all psyched about the project already!
  2. Hmm.. The rx rotors are vented.. but I think they're a lot smaller in diameter than the chevy.. A friend of mine bought my old RX V8 project a few months back, so I'll go over to his house sometime and have a look.. btw ,whats the dia. of the chev camaro rotors?
  3. Could be the 'black box' on the dizzy is ready to quit on you.. I've heard of them just going bad. I have a spare 280zx dizzy I might be willing to sell if you like.. heck, I could drive down there and we could drop it in just to see if it helps.. Im only about 1.5 hours away from you ya know! I think I have a Haynes manual for the zx too.. need one? As for the e brake, I agree with jmort.. those zx calipers SUCK.. you might be able to rebuild/fix them though.. I've done it.. I know how you feel man.. it sucks when the 10 day is running out and the vehicle refuses to cooperate! Anyway, I'll send you a pm with my # if you wana hook up. I'm always up for meeting other Z guys!
  4. Funny.. I was thinking of something like this today for my planed V8.. Im getting a 351 windsor out of a 91 Crown Vic (I get whole car, junk what I don't use) and thought.. Hey.. I could cut the front of the frame and crossmember off of the ford, and somehow 'graft' it onto/into the Z front frame section. (besicaly delete the Z 'rails' and weld the ford frame to the strut towers/firewall) As for the mounting of the rack and lower suspension arm, I was thinkng of custom bracket(s) using pieces of the stock Z crosmember welded it.. Heck anything's possible I guess.. just how much time/$$$ are you willing to spend..
  5. Um.. yah.. It looks (to me) a LOT like the 1st gen engine bay.. weird.. Damn man.. I LOVE the 3rd gen looks.. and with that monster in there.. oh boy oh boy!
  6. Like said above, the clutch workes pretty much like the brakes. You just have to get all the air out after the new parts/lines are instaled. I've never done a Z, but lots of other models/makes and it's just like bleeding brakes.. just make sure the car's suported well, and the friend helping you understands what has to be done. It can get really frustrating when you're under the car, and the guy pushing the clutch pedel keeps pumping as you try to open the bleeder screw.
  7. Just thought I should ask; Anything I'm missing/gona run into if I do this 'plan' to a 71 240z? (I was going to do my 75' 280 but just cant bring myself to chop her up.. Fortunatly, I have found a 71 that suits my needs.. heh heh) I know the spacer for the toy 4x4 brakes is thicker for the 240s, but are there major difrences between 240/280 that may cause me problems doing this swap? I posted a bit in the non tech about this 240 I'm looking at.. and no, I'm not gona go over to Chevy (even though it would seam to be 'easier'). This 351 deal is too good for me to pass up! Also; I did a bit of searching as well, and assuming its the stock r180 (eeek... hope I dont kill it!) in the rear, the 3.54 gears will probly be more suitable for the 351/C4 auto..
  8. Looks good man! Nice and straight.. espesialy for a T.O. car! Hope you can work out those problems with it.
  9. Yah man, I'v recently discovered that my 75 is quite capable of drifting.. I thought that my car was a bit to under powered and 'beat up' to atemt anything like that, but wow was I wrong! From a stand still (not so good for the clutch, I know ) I can light em' up, and just go slideways as long as I want.. I was doing some figure 8's last week, and I don't find it too much of a pain to change directions.. I find the z is actually a fairly 'forgiving' car to throw around.. Fun stuff!
  10. I you got the room, yah use the long one. I used a short style pump in my 85 RX7, just because there was so little room in there between the engine and rad. I can't see that being a prob in a Z though!
  11. Awesome man... wow.. I forgot how cramped the 1st gen RX engine bay is with a V8 in there! She's gona fly!
  12. I would say cut as little as you can off.. IMO that front 'piece' does have some importance to the structure of the car.. to keep the 'rails' and strut towers from moving/flexing. But if you're gona put some bars back in after you fmic and stuf is mounted, it should be fine. I'm just thinking if you're gona drift this thing hard, with all that power, it's gona twist a bit without some suport. Looking good though man!!
  13. Ok... background.. I'm wanting to do a V8 swap this winter (351windsor/C4) and have evrything worked out.. as far as what I have to buy/do. Curently driving my 75 280 (fairly stock.. SU's open exhast..) which I was thinking of doing the swap to.. I was just a little hesitant to 'hack it up' cause it runs/drives/looks good as is... So that brings me to now; I have discovered a 71 240z localy (well, 2 hours north of me..) that is complete and fairly straight. I'm thinking if I built this one, I could leave my 75 alone.. A nice stock DRIVER you know? Heres the rundown; It WAS converted to 350 Chev a few years ago(no engin/trans now), has air dam moulded to front end 'sans bumper' (looks good) f.glass fenders, rear wheel flares, roll pan, front coil overs of unknown origin, roll bar, guages, and of course, the floors/rails are pretty much history. Thing is, it still sits straight, doors open/close good and are SOLID.. (Im thinkin the trans tunel, window pilars and roof are holding it together..) and the front and rear 'frame' areas are still pretty good.. salvageable anyway imo. Interior is all there.. decent.. glass is all good, has NICE 'sport' rims on it (Iron cross loking Z rims) with decent BFG rubber, and all the trim/crome is nice. All in all, I think its a good builder.. and if I tear into it and decide its too far gone? Well, for $300 Can. I figure it's GOT to be worth at least that in good parts! Now I have to find a car trailer I can borrow or something... man oh man... I think I may need psychiatric help..
  14. Yah, the ZX rims will bolt right on there dude. Look good on a 200 too! I had an 85' a few years back. Great cars.. a bit underpowered though.. looks like you're gona take care of THAT however! Good luck man!
  15. 1: I had a similar stalling problem on an 86 Yota Rustrunner.. it uses a LOT of similar looking FI/sensors (Denso, AFM, ect) I replaced a throttle sensor/switch (can't remember) and it was fine.. 2; My old 81 had the same shake.. I just got used to it over time But it was tierod's in mine.. You may have a badly bent rim as well.
  16. That is awesome.. omfg.. wow.. I bet that thing goes like hell..
  17. Personaly, if it was me I'd pull the head off to notch the ports out.. I'd still use rags/tissue to block them off, but just in case little bits of metal got past, you could flush it out easily with the head on a bench.. If it's on the car, it'd be a big oops waiting to happen IMO.. just imagine what bits of metal would do to the internals..
  18. First off, ha ha. pucker factor.. Yah.. As for the rear diff, I forgot to mention something; It came from an 81 zx, and from evrything I can find out, it'll be a 3:90 gear. but I have no choice anyway, as my 75's diff is fubar.. (grinding, clunking, screaming, leaking, ect) I don't do much cruising on the highway, so I figure it'll be ok.. I'd like a 5 gear, but the C4 comes already attached and working, with a Hurst ratchet shifter. It'll probly be a good thing (for a little while) for me to keep both hands on the wheel anyway..
  19. Ok, gona do a 351 Windsor swap this winter, trying to get evrything together (parts/issues) and PLANED now to get a budget going, and to have goals to shoot for. Also wanting to halt any 'while I'm at it' bugs from creaping in by having a 'game plan' to go on. Heres what I have so far; -Rip out I6/trans and diff (it's toast, have a good r200/shafts to slide in) -Clean frame/underbody and weld/strenghen chasiss. posible 4 pt cage (looking for local help with this one) -Brake upgrade; zx M/C, toy 4X4 calipers/300zx rotor (for now.. I may ditch the drums and upgrade front again the folowing winter.. ) -new bushings all around for the suspension, posibly coil overs/good struts -Source out suitable rad + trans cooler, electric fan(s) -Get engine/trans (351/C4) and fab mounts -figure out exhast routing ( oh boy...) -fab driveshaft -graft ford engine EFI harness into Z and make guages work/buy aftermarket stuf.. -fuel pump.. Holley? Whew.. ok, what did I miss guys? Not lookin for 'other ideas/mods to do' but am I forgeting anything required to complete this install as 'basic' as possible? I know, the efi is gona be a pita, but I wana be able to turn the key, and drive it. (I'm really sick of that 'warm up for 15 mins or the Z goes POP fart BANG blaaaaaa.....) sooo.... thoughts?
  20. Damn... pretty place to park his pretty car.. I too would ditch the tv and slots.. need a decent stereo for tunes while working, but the rest of that crap would be a distraction for sure.. And I doubt that hoist is intended for working on a car.. most likely for storage. I woudln't have gone with the fancy floor either.. 'Real' work on cars causes oil/coolant/ect spills from time to time.. Id go with simple grey paint. Love the space though...
  21. Is the 260 tach the same as a 280? (I thought it was just the 240's that were different) If so, I can go look at my 280 and get you the wire colour/locations. Im running a zx dizzy as well. I had evrything discombooberated and had to figure out all the wiring when I got my car done this past spring.. IIRC, I just ran a jumper wire from the + batt and touched the wires (there's likt 5 in a bunch by the coil) till the tach jumped.
  22. Rotary's are cool. when built, no doubt.. but anyone who knows about rotarys will tell you they can be .. finiky. And from evrything I'v ever heard, it's hard to get a lot of milage out of them. As in, after about 100k, they will pop and you have to rebuild. And when they go, it's suddenly and without warning. But hey.. its gona be a cool hybrid man! I say do it!
  23. First off, I didnt realize it's a 280zx.. not that it woudlnt work.. but being in cali.. well, your screwed then.. damn.. sorry dude.. um.. replace evrything?
  24. So the ford 5 bold and 300zx 5 bolt patern is the same!?? A local J/Y here has THREE 300zx's, and I used to work there so I get a deal on anything I need.. hmmm...
  25. I took great pleasure in ripping off that offensive piece of crap system and throwing it across the shop. Bolted on a set of 72' SU's and haven't looked back. As I lifted out the FI intake, I actually said to my friend 'See, now we take this, and throw it away.' Come to think of it.. it's still sitting on the floor where I left it 3 months ago.. I love how they made evrything extremly complex, with multiple failing points all over the place.. (relays controled by temp switches, dual pickup dizzy reliant on temp swith/relay/ MESS of wiring.. ect) and it's all hard to diagnos. I fought with that god awefull system (75 280z) for a month, still wouldn't run properly, and then gave up and started welding/doing body work for the next 6 months.. during the course of which I discovered the solution: Get rid of it all! I wish you luck man.. abandon all hope ye who enter the Z FI system...
