  1. Well, I need a V8 for my Z I think...just love the torque and the rumble. See.. I lined up at a red with a buddy last night; He drives an '04 Dodge Ram short box/reg cab with.. dum da da dum... the HEMI. Yah.. I got off the green really nice, and he let me wind out a bit (playing) till I got to third.. Then he proceded to WALK past me like I was standing still. I looked down, and was at 5000rpm in 3rd.. dang.. shifted to 4th and backed off, (read; GAVE UP and hung my head in shape..) as he was now about 10 car lenghts ahead of me.. (btw, this was late at night, on a highway with no other traffic around, and neither of us had passengers) I have a plan to put my head on a zx block, bump c/r up, cam, 5 speed it, open exhast, ect ect.. BUT I got to thinking.. that's still only gona get me MAYBE 180-200 horse.. and V8 pickups are still gona hand me my arse, no matter how well I can drive... I think it's time for an agonizing re-apraisal of the whole situation.. ( name that movie quote!) Im probly lookin at around $1000 for all this motor/head/clutch work... and I was gona weld up the car some more (still flexing/creaking), redo the exhast, and beef up the susp/brakes ANYWAY... hmm.. I bet I could find a running 5.0 stang/5 gear for less than $1000 for a doner.. Man.. I need help...
  2. Right.. 'batch' firing or somethin... The older Z's (75-78) fired the injectors in groups of three didnt they?
  3. I think they have to be instaled one way only.. if they're all mixed up, it'd pulse the injector(s) at the wrong time imo... therefore causing the car not to run..
  4. That red light should have a button close by to push.. it'll run through some pictures/words (oil, stop sigh shape, ect) sort of a gimicky 'check' light. As for the 'voice'.. I think it runs to the drivers side speaker, so slaming the door may have jared the wires.. they could be old and coroded, or broken apart from the conections.. time to pull the door panel I think!
  5. Looks like an old Mustang had a baby with an old corvette.. kinda cool lookin!
  6. On the Toyota motor; Yup, reliable as the day is long.. and IIRC, there was even a turbo model availible (4x4 trucks I believe) that would be interesting.. but parts can get pricey for Toyotas, and its a PITA to change the timing chain. (had an 86 $runner. Yah, I ment to put the $ instead of the 4.) As for the Ford 2.3, I have heard from a few people that the blowing h/g issue is solved by using good quality head bolts, and torquing them an extra 10-20 pounds more than it calls for. Also heard that the 2.3 is an extreamly 'over built' motor otherwise.. you can abuse the hell out of them, crank the boost, and have no problems. Plus when they DO blow up, you can rebuild/buy another fairly cheep.
  7. IIRC there is a conection under the lower panel, just below the stearing wheel/dash board (there's a light in the center of it too I think). I don't know where the actuall 'brain' of the thing is (I never looked that far) but disconecting that cuts the link to the speaker. (well, it did in my old zx..) Might be a place to start looking. Hope this helps..
  8. Er.. hmm.. yah. the 6K thing.. weeeell.. it's getting a freshened up head this winter, and thats getting bolted to a zx block w/flat tops.. almost 10:1 CR, open exhast and the zx 5 gear.. weee!!! So if the trans/clutch lets go, or the motor FINALLY gives up, (although it looks like it'd keep on going for a while! ) it doesnt matter too much.. seeing as the snow is comming soon.. thanks for the reminder Glen .. and it's all getting ripped out anyway. I don't know what it is though.. I get in the Z and drive..well, like a nut! Get in my truck, and I'm like an old lady.. go figure.. P.S. Glen; you should bring the Z up here some day.. heh heh.. I bet we could get quite a bit of attention just cruising through town in two white Z's!
  9. Yah, I get looks from the bikers too.. very cool to have a guy roll by on a hog, and stare at ME in my Z.. And yah, the late 30's early 40's women tend to give me more attention than the kids in the rice burners..
  10. Hmm.. Im catching up to you Tim; A 280Z and a Nissan King cab here at home (not to mention the heap of parts/automotive 'stuf' in the garage), an 85 RX7 at a friends shop(also full of uh.. stuff), and at my work, TWO 89 pathfinders, and a 280zx 2+2! I think it's a sickness or something...
  11. Got a nice ego boost tonite; I drove by a parking lot in a hurry (wound to 6 grand in 1st.. hee hee got a chirp into 2nd..) and caught the attention of two guys sitting in their cars; 90's Chev baretta;red underglow, loud stereo, and a 95+ 200sx; nice rims/body kit/rice wing, ect. I look in the rear view and see that they pulled out to try to catch me, but I got through a light and got to the highway before them. (probly cause I had a case of lead foot goin on.. and was eeee 30k over the limet.. ) About 4 k's up the road (into the next town) I roll up to a red light, and the Baretta goes by; the guy smiles and nods. Then the kid in the 200sx rolls up and stops beside me. He looks over, gives me the thumbs up, and looks over at his girlfriend.. (yah, she was cute too.. hmm..) I figure. meh, at least he aknowleged the car.. Next thing I know, his stereo goes quiet, and the window rolls right down.. He looks over and yells "That's AWSOME man! Datsuns F'n ROCK!!! SWEET RIDE!!!" I nod 'Thanks man.' Got to say I was a bit impressed, as my Z has NO markings saying 'Z' or 'Datsun' anywhere, and I've had people ask if its a Porsche, a cobra, a Jag, ect.. Heh heh.. I love driving an old Z... It just feels good..
  12. omg.. I just realized something I should have thought of; I was running NO vac advance (just advanced the dizzy, got a slightly high idle..meh), But recently, I switched to a 'suposedly' good dizzy and started using the advance.. could be why Im poping.. maybe that's your issue as well?
  13. Yah.. me too man! Speaking as a 1st year apprentice, I can say I definatly know.. uh.. not much! I can see why it takes 4 years to apprentice, and then another 4-6 to become a GOOD tool maker/machinist but hey.. life is all about learning right?
  14. Yah man, go with a Fiat X19! I like those little things, but they're hard to find in my neck of the wods.
  15. Only thing I can think of is this; After you put the header on, you might have bumped/broken the adjusters on the botom of the carbs, losening them up. As you drove around for a few days, they rattled themselvs loose, and eventually threw off the mix too much.. maybe? Mine acts like this when its cold, and is next to imposible to drive.. first time it happened I thought I was gona need a tow to get home.. but eventually it ran fine after it got hot..
  16. Shame about those old houses.. Oh yes.. The lead screws could be just worn.. is this machine quite old? If so, Im sure it's seen LOTS of use over the years, and posibly not much maintinence. But the gibs should take up most of the slack.. Im not sure if is even posible to put the table in 'backwards' is there? That surface grinder should be a nice one too. My shop has an old one, but it's dead nuts acurate. I'll agree with the safety thing as well.. hmm.. improperly secured workpiece.. 2.5" cutter at 3000rpm.. wow.. never did find that piece...
  17. Yup, and if you run it too long like that (dead batt, car running off alternator) it will kill the alt. Ask me how I know.. (3 cars this has happend to me! arrggg..) Likely, you will be ok if you fix this prob now, instead of letting it go.....
  18. Another way to get the shape is to cut a section out of a scrap door, just ahead of the handle. You can trim it to fit in the indent where the handle used to be (after removing the actual latch/ect), and glue/mig it in place. Then, just add a thin skim of bondo to smooth out evrything.
  19. Hey Dot, I'm not old! heh heh.. I feel it now though... And that has to be the most gawd awfull 'thing' I have ever seen.. eeewwwww...
  20. Funny.. I have most of those individual videos saved.. hilarious evry one of them.. funny shite!
  21. Hmm.. ok then.. what ever it was in my Z, doesnt matter anyway! Got carbs now; easy to tune! Im thinking though.. my pathy problem may be a tps/sensor then.. I have a parts truck (identical year and model) so maybe I'll try swaping some parts around. The check engine light comes on with the key, but goes out after start up so it's working.. But will the light come on if the ecu is in 'limp mode'? IE; shouldn't the light be on FIRST, before the ecu switches to limp? I've got to get the manual so I can get the codes out.. and put in a 'known good' (as in NEW) O2 sensor. Ive got one from the parts truck in there right now.. I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks again for the help.
  22. Well, I FINALLY got pulled over last night.. been waiting for it for a while, seeing as I'v been driving the Z for over a month with no incident... So Im cruising around town with the girlfriend last night.. about 12:30am.. come up to a red light, and notice a cop on the other side.. no big deal, Im legal and all. Im gona go right.. so I get in the right lane, signal, stop.. and as I look left, I see a buddy of mine waiting to turn left. I check and theres no trafic behind me, so I back up a foot or so and lean my head out to tell my friend I'll turn around and meet him in a minit at the local coffee shop up the road (the direction he's going). As I do this, the light turns green... I look up.. ok.. make my turn.. huh? the cop turns and follows me! So I roll down to the next street, make a right, and sure enough, 5oh's tailing me. so after two more right turns (to get back to the intersection I started at) he decides to throw on his lights. Im watching and waiting for it, so Im off to the side of the road in about 2 seconds, cars turned off, licence/ins./ownership ready. Cop walks up (cheking out my car.. obviously cant figure out what the hell it is ) and gets my info, takes it back to his car. At this point my girlfriend is getting a little woried, a few hondas roll by, rubber necking, and Im almost laughing out loud caus there's nothing he can get me for really, but it's a sports car and I guess the cop was bored or something.. Anyway, he comes back and says 'evrythings fine here.. just wondering what you were doing back there.. you're a local, so I know you wern't lost.. what's up?' I tell him I was talking to my friend, and was turning around to meet him. And then add that I didnt want to make a left turn from the right lane with a police officer across the intersection!! Cop says 'Ahh.. that was a good dicision. Have a nice nite.' And he drives away. I get to the coffee shop and my buddys like "WTF man?!" I tell him.. well, I just got pulled over for making a right turn, from the right turn lane, on a green light. Had a good laugh over that one!
  23. Thanks for the info and the link, I'll check that out. I didnt realize the ecu would have that light on it (my 85 200sx did.. figured they got rid of that feature) I'll have to get a manual for it. As for my 75, uh.. yes, it had a 'limp home' mode.. A Nissan parts guy (who was a Datsun mechanic back when these cars were NEW 25 years ago) explained it to me. He also said to check the TVS (switch remember, not a sensor) and I did change it out, but to no avail. Doesnt matter now anyway as I switched to SU's. Thanks again man.
