  1. I just had a thought... it would be a bit of messing around, but I'll bet it could be done.. If you were to somehow 'fake' the proper signals to the ecu, the factory ecu would work the tranny for you.. I'm thinking in terms of a throttle body injected motor here... What I mean is; Somehow attach a tps to your carb along with the tv cable, use... led's (or something?) in place of the injectors, pull a signal off the dizzy (ecu needs to see it to adjust timing) and install an 02 sensor.. (this would help with tuning anyway, or if you wanted an A/F guage) Basicaly tell the ecu that your motor is running/under throttle and it SHOULD shift the tranny... I'm not sure if you'd need ALL the sensors hooked up, maybe just the tps/tv cable.. My truck (91 tbi 454) ran and drove fine with the 02 wire broken off, knock sensor hanging by it's wire, and a bad temp sensor!

    Why...

    Uh... ahem............... what?
  3. For sure. What they said! I love this place.. hell, I don't even bother going to other car forums anymore!
  4. Well hey now.. Maybe that's WHY I'm nuts.. It actually stoped snowing today.. (FINALLY got to take the truck out of 4 wheel drive.. man does it suck the gas!) but only for about 8 hours, and it's back to it again. I have to find my digicam to take a few pics of my driveway, and around town.. It's crazy.. Apparently they're calling for another 2 feet of something stupid.. I think Barrie is almost as bad as here (I'm only 40 mins north) BUT I have a plan; I'm going to put a snowblower in the back of my truck, and drive south. I will continue driving south until someone points at it and says "Hey.. what the heck it that thing?!?" and THAT is where I will live...
  5. Very thin stainless IIRC.. and they do look great compared to the later plastic ones..
  6. Do you have a big cam in the motor? Sounds similar to my problem with my L28 (camed/minor head work) with SU carbs.. Too much carb/fuel for low throttle (don't need a A/F guage when you can smell that much fuel in the exhast!), it's just right in the mid range, and falls off (goes lean) up top... is that carb a vac secondary or mechanical? Could be opening up too soon which richens it too much? Also.. that sounds like a lot of advance for a 383.. shouldn't it be back around 10-12*?
  7. So it hasn't stopped snowing for about 7 days in a row here.. I have 5 feet of snow bank on either side of my driveway, and there have been something like 2000 accidents reported in the region in the last 3 days. School was closed yesterday, and maybe half my class showed up today.. (some guys drive in from almost 2 hours away, and thats on a GOOD day!) I'm 5 minits from the school, and aside from not having any more space to throw snow from my driveway, I'm doing ok I guess.. So tonite me and the girlfriend are out for a coffee, and as I roll to a stop sign, I see a truck up ahead stuck in the snowbank across from his own driveway. (he was pulling it out to swap vehicles around) The whole passenger side of this full size TWO wheel drive chev is right in the bank, witch is about 3' tall., and I can't see his right tail light. As I pull up, he's taking a run up the driveway in his minivan and smashes it into the porch of the house.. (driveway is a steep slope too) So I ask him where he wants the truck.. Small irony here; the street is named 'Easy' and it is actually quite a steep incline.. and covered in 6" of slush and snow. Anyway, I hook up my 'big stupid chain' which has links about 4"x2" around, and is 20 feet long, and throw the truck in 4 low. The guy doesn't think I'll even budge him, but I'm not woried; First try was a dead pull, and I spun all 6 tires (wow.. does a 454 dually ever throw a rooster tail of crap!) So I slackened the chain and gave him a little whip, which broke him free, but he was still in the bank with the rear tires (stinking 2wd...) So I simply drove up the street about 4 car lenghts. and dragged him into the middle of the road. Muhahaha.. Here's the crazy part; He stops, I reverse slightly (to slacken the chain) and get out. He puts the truck in park and gets out.. and HIS TRUCK STARTS ROLLING BACK!!!! takes me a second to realize.. BANG!! My truck moves about 6" and holds... WTF?!? Guy check's.. yup, it's in park.. what the hell?!?! At this point, his daughter comes out freaking out, screaming and yelling at him (it's her boyfriends truck apparently!) saying he's going to wreck the truck, yada yada.. I felt like I was on some cheazy talk show or something.. Anyway, my guess is the park pin is sheared off or something, so I had to get him to stay in his truck holding the brakes while I backed up again and jumped out to remove the chain. All in all an interesting night.. The guy offered me a cold beer, but I said no thanks. I didn't charge him any $$$ or anything.. looks like he's got enough problems with a crazy daughter, and a smacked up minivan/porch!
  8. Funny.. I thnk I actualy posted something like this a few years ago.. I wanted to build one for my Z too! Havn't got around to it yet.. Although I think the spread of the gears would make the pattern slots a bit wide...
  9. Thats cool man.. I love the wagon! I'm still planing to build a hotrod'd Volvo 240 wagon someday.. (510's are too hard to come by up here.. for what I can spend!) Looking good.
  10. Maybe a 240sx 5 speed? Why are you wanting to change; want better ratios or is the 200sx box dead? Sound cool thought! Welcome to the site btw.
  11. Yah, Maybe 1.5 minits tops, but thats pushing it... if it's just a short distance, and you don't rev it too much you should be fine.
  12. Heh.. just wanted to point out the IRONY here, that the last post happens to be LS1 240Z's 350th post!! Oh.. and I thought the 'hot rodded 305' thing was to put 350 HEADS on a 305... Not the other way around..
  13. I would pull the entire harness, ecu, sensors, ignition and injectors.. carefully mark evrything (what conects where, ect) and fit the whole system to the 280zx motor... the only hitch might be the injectors; fiting them to the Z manifold, and what cylinders to put where... ?? I don't think the zx ecu would understand a MAF signal..
  14. Any 12 volt source will power the HEI, BUT; Whatever you use, it MUST stay live 12v even with the key in the 'start' position. It took me an hour chasing wires to figure this out after I got my rx7 back (sold it two years ago to a friend, bought it back last summer) in non-running condition. Every time I cranked it, the 12v to the ignition cut off, so I got no spark and a lot of flooding.... it would have helped if the timing was close too..
  15. I believe that mecanicaly, the tranny and convertor would hold together, as long as you don't beat the car to death evry time you drive.. Me and a buddy rebuilt/rodded his truck last winter (91 gm 1 ton dually) and the stock 4L80E has held up fine behind the mild 454 (Close to 400hp, maybe.. 600lbs torque?) which is just over half the power you want to run.. BUT; this is a 6000lb truck with a 3:73 rear end, and it gets DRIVEN if you know what I mean. Thing is.. I *think* the tranny needs the input from an FI motor to properly shift/lock up/ect... and a speed signal as well. (stock GMs ussualy send from the back of the spedo to the ECU)
  16. I have a 'glasspack' muffler in the tunnel of my 75 280z.. it sound's good to me, but I know it's actually hurting performance a little (lots of restriction) and it was a bit too long to stick behind the rear tire in the stock position, not to mention I didn't leave a cut out in the rear roll pan.. It is a very raspy sound at WOT, or anything above 3K rpm.. A guy said once (after I drove past him at the top of 2nd, wide open) it sounded like a cross between a Ferrari and a sport bike.. Heh.. either way, it's a very diffrent sound than most cars around here.. L6's just naturaly sound cool IMO. I'd say for your budget, you might get a typical 'turbo' style muffler (like a flowmaster or magna flow knock off) if you shop around..
  17. I have a whole BOX full of 'dammit' tools...
  18. My understanding of it is simply to eliminate some 'drag' caused by the crank turning through the oil. A knife edge will slice through much cleaner and smoother than a blunt (stock) edge therefore freeing up some power and likely reving faster... although, maybe someone more knowlegable can chime in here?
  19. Yes... YOUR description (read; oppinion, as you are entitled to have) but not nessasarily true in this context... Are you saying he should keep the stock Z motor rather than put in a 'boat anchor' 305?!?!? The post started with the point that he HAS a 305 already... it is a good runing engine... Perhaps he doesn't have an extra $2-500 in the budget to go out and 'buy a 350' with? Or maybe he's already spending that cash on another important part of the car.. This isn't a question of which is the BEST choice, given the choice. (if you can swing it, more displacment is always better. :flamedevil: ) This is a guy using what he's got at his disposal, and I think that's great. It's still going to work, it's still going to be cool, and I doubt most folks on here would give him a hassle just for using a 305 instead of a 350. When I was driving my 305 powered rx7, I NEVER had anyone put it down for being a crapy 305.. rather, they looked at the little car with a big V8 and said "Cool!!" and yes, I told anyone who asked it was in fact a 305. Don't get me wrong, I'm not bent out of shape over this.. I'm actually kind of laughing as I type this.. but it seams the topic is being kicked like a dead horse, and is getting away from the 'spirit' of Hybridz in a sense.. hell, I wouldn't put a rotary engine in a Z either... but wait.. didn't someone here do that?!?!? Meh, no skin of my nose what anyone thinks really.. Just two more cents....
  20. Uh... really? I re-torqued mine... Seamed that it needed it too..
  21. That car is in a little better shape body wise than mine was, (you'd be suprised what can be repaired!) but mine was together and driveable.. and I live in Canada, so ANY Z is pretty rare up here... I'd say find one in better shape (should be easy down there) and MAYBE buy this one for $50, for parts..
  22. Generaly, 3 jaws simply do not run perfectly concentric, just the nature of the beast. Some can get pretty close, granted, but if you REALLY need to be precise, then a 4 jaw is what you need. Although a 4 jaw requires more skill/know how to set up a piece properly, it is the best way to run the piece perfectly true. That is an interesting link, but I would still go for a 4 jaw myself.. I don't believe that his 3 jaw (modified as it is) is going to be MORE acurate than a 4 jaw.. it just takes a lot of effort to get the 4 jaws running prefect (read; skill and patience!).
  23. I dissagree... beides, he's already stated he's going to go ahead with the 305.. My self, well.. I've done 305's in the past cause they were good runners and found cheep. There seams to be this stigma attached to a '350' and it tends to drive the price up, regardless of the actual condition of the motor (I'm talking about used motors here) in my exp. That said, I would not put a lot of $$$ INTO a 305, or bother doing a full build on one... but a simple drop in and run, why not?!? Like I said, a V8 is a V8 and in all likelyhood (regardless of displacement) WILL be more powerfull than the stock Z motor.. My .02$
