rytherwr replied to jnjdragracing's topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
Superb, John....what a thrash, eh? Glad it's hummin' Just took the monster out for its first test drive this afternoon....checking for brakes, leaks, clunks, clanks, etc, etc. Seems to be ok. Still got work to do, but should be ok. See ya there. Wayne -
What is it that you hunt again.........?.....)

Great stuff, John....good to see it going back together. -
Thanks Scottie...we met at the March SEZ, however, you were having problems with the car so I strongly suspect your mind was elsewhere. I didn't have a hotrod there, but enjoyed the heck out of it anyway. See ya there. Wayne

Hey, Rick...long time, no talk...it's KILLING me! looking forward to seeing you and yours also...need any parts???? ) Z-GAd- Many thanks for the kudo's...by the looks of your times, I should get a good look at your license plate...looking forward to it. BuZy- Good thoughts...I have a tower brace I will install and we'll see what happens from there. Hanns- gorgeous looking engine...I'm hoping those M&H's, adjustability of the four-link and 13.5 inches on the ground will let me leave without too much tire spin...I've watched 8 second runs on DOT's, so I'm hoping to sort it out. DavyZ- Yes, the motor is a World Products built by Mitchell and his gang. Yes, you are an observant gentleman....that is a '78 totally re-worked with 383 chevy, 250 hp nitrous, built 700r-4, r230 conversion, full cage, etc, etc. The red car is an accident, I didn't really mean to do it...(yeah, I know, my wife said the same thing you are thinking )) On the other side you can see a Toyota Tundra that is going back together after SEZ....284 cu in motor has SBC forged rods, custom Ross forged pistons, re-worked overhead cams and lots of other stuff....did I mention it is supercharged, turbocharged, nitroused and alcohol injected? After I get the TEC3r installed and the motor tuned, I'm looking for 700 hp on pump gas and around 1000 on 110...Yes, I can't leave stuff alone. By the way, the 78 is for sale...everything to complete it and then some..it's about 85% right now. Will bring fliers to SEZ. Wayne

Sorry folks....A couple of the other pics of the underside didn't come out well so here are some better ones. Wayne
-
Darn, Bartman...I'm impressed if that is a pic of a 570 in that Z! Think I'll just stay at home....)
-
Now I've gotta get back to work if I want to get this thing done.........
-
Due to popular demand.....( oh, the pressure!), here are some quick views of the hotrod. I sincerely hope the view from the back is the view that at least some folks see....) enjoy

Geez,..... picky, picky, picky...

Been going like crazy trying to get the hot rod together for SEZ and last night the monster breathed! Fired up at the first turn of the key and it sure sounds bad for a small block chevy. I'm running it through 1 7/8 primary Sanderson headers and 3" from the collectors through the 3" side-pipes. Won't mistake it for a Lexus for sure. Drive train is now complete....gotta finish the wiring, put in the dash, mount and hook up the shifter, put the interior back together, and make a cover for the fuel cell and I will take it out for a test drive. This thing was an empty shell on a trailer 15 June, so I'm pleased with the progress. Specs: 71 240Z, wide-body conversion, Small block chevy, 4L80E, Denny's driveshaft, 9 inch ford, 4:11's, Moser axles, M&H DOT rears, full cage, etc, Oh, did I forget to mention it is a 454 cu in small block chevy....go figger ) Should be ready to go for SEZ....it will be ugly and untested, but looking to be there.... Man, sorry to see that....somebody is looking out for you, eh? Best wishes in getting it back together and tuned for SEZ. H-m-m-m-m the folks who are challenging under the old conditions should re-think their strategy now that the motor will be kicking on all eight, me thinks....) Wayne -
Testing the M/T DR's and New Slicks tonight

John, Great stuff and thanks for sharing. What did you do differently than the last time to make them hook or do you believe it was the difference in the tracks? Wayne -
Testing the M/T DR's and New Slicks tonight
rytherwr replied to jnjdragracing's topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
Best of luck with the testing tonight. Look forward to the results later... I'm coming along pretty well....still on track to finish by the end of Aug....Hope to get it down to our eighth mile track to do some testing in early Sept...if not, we will do it at SEZ 7. Wayne -
Great job Michael! I can't quite match the 460, but almost....trying to get the hot rod completed for SEZ 7 in Reynolds, GA on 10 Sept. Got it as an empty shell off E-Bay on the 15th of June and been busting butt ever since to get it completed. Think I'm going to make it. Couple of pics attached...71 240Z with wide-body conversion, back-halved, 9 inch Ford with moser axles and 4:11's, 4L80E transmission, and tiny small block chevy....hope to have it done by the end of Aug....wish me luck.... Header Heat and Backfire... HELP
rytherwr replied to Nealio240z's topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
Sounds like you may be running pretty lean.....the give-away is the backfiring when you give it too much air (opening the the secondaries) and the headers glowing overly much (running lean will do that easily). If it is a used carb, check the metering jets, make sure you are getting fuel through the entire carb, definitely check fuel pressure after the pump and before the carb....sounds like too much air and not enough fuel to me....a guess only without knowing the rest. -
Hey folks, Lotsa great info in the other posts, some accurate and some not so accurate and I thought I would not get into the techie stuff and provide anyone who wants to check it out with a source that will knock your socks off....literally! My credentials include being a hands-on sound engineer both home and automotive. The two couldn't be more different in the final execution of a killer system, however, the basics of sound reproduction and audio theories and engineering are equally critical. That being said, check out the following: Daniel L. Ferguson: Ultimate Autosound: Your guide to heaven on wheels Car stereo speaker projects illustrated How to design and install high performance car stereo If you want to learn as well as come up with some killer sound, check 'em out! I have done many an install using Ferguson's methodologies and designs....I'm a 'tight' bass guy and you can sure put a system together of any description using the knowledge and experience portrayed in these handbooks. 'Nough said....hope ya'll have at it! Wayne

Maichor, Thanks to you, I had already bought the socket screw bolts from the source in your post. I'll tell you, after goofing around with a number of options, I would gladly have paid the $116 to get one already made. Again, thanks. fl327, I'll let you know what it will hold once I get ZVette percolating. Got a pretty hot 383 fuel injected chevy and mama bought me a 250 HP nitrous kit for Christmas (gotta love a woman like that!) so we will put it to the test! Wayne

Maichor, Many thanks for the adaptor info. Just got off the 'phone with John at Powertrain Industries (from the info in your post) concerning the R230 flange adaptor they make for the 300zxtt one-piece driveshaft conversion. Thought y'all would like to know that John says he has plenty in stock so there is no wait and the price is $96.67 plus shipping. Sure beats making an adaptor. Again, thanks for the steer...... Wayne
-
Me neither!.......and thanks for the scoop. Appreciate. Wayne
-
I'm making a round steel adaptor that will bolt into the R230 diff flange using all six bolts. It will be thick enough (approx 3/4") to set the bolt heads below the surface of the adaptor and still have some meat left to handle the torque of a 500 lb ft motor. Get your machine shop to center the JTR driveshaft flange (1310 U joints) by machining an index relief in the outboard face of the adaptor to match the index ring on the JTR flange. Drill and tap the holes to match the JTR flange holes (10x125) and you're in business! Of course you must get a driveshaft made to length. It's not done yet, but will take and post pics when I get it back. This is one way, I'm sure there are others. Hope this helps. Wayne

Sorry 'bout not divulging my source, gang, I had NO idea there would be the interest I'm hearing. Thought I was the only one having the problem. Got the emblems made at http://www.youremblem.com. They are plastic but of great quality. Hope this gets me off the hook........
-
Got my emblems!!! 78 280z w/383 chevy stroker, '65 vette chambered exhaust and 82 vette rear bumper, hence the name ZVETTE. What -d-ya think folks?? (couldn't seem to get a good picture, however they are chrome, not gold or yellow as one pic shows)

Many thanks, Neil. Scary as this sounds, I think I am beginning to make sense of these animals. Wayne
