Installed fuel injection on the hotrod from an outfit called MassFlo and am highly pleased with the results. Uses computer and sensors from 86-93 Ford Mustang, Mass Air Flow sensor from corvette with signal conditioner between it and the Ford EEC so it can read them, a Victor Jr single plane modified for the system and a 1000 cfm throttle body/42 lb injectors. Installation was straight forward and easy and most impressive, the car didn't turn over twice before it started. I made all the adjustments, took it to the track and ran low 6.70's in the eighth all night long. Keep in mind, this is a 10:1 compression street motor that I run on 93 octane pump gas. Seemed like I could get some more out of it, so I took it down to Panhandle Performance in Lynn Haven FL and had Mark dyno tune it. Found it was rich across the board, fixed that and also found the ignition was breaking up around 5400 rpm. Put an MSD box on it and fixed that problem and ran like gang busters. I'm going to try to get to the track Sunday and see what the difference is. It feels much stronger everywhere and I am totally happy with the result, especially the driveability on the street. Will update when I run it. No hp numbers from the dyno...) However, the engine shipped with a sheet that showed 600 hp and 575 lb/ft at the flywheel with the carburetor.

You are DA MAN! Kuntry...that's what this stuff is all about!!! The right 'tude does absolute wonders in the hot rod business. ) Wayne -
Looking for a few CHEBY parts For startup and Break in
rytherwr replied to Mikelly's topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
Hey Mike, I probably really don't have what you need, but I do have a World Products single plane intake and 1050 Dominator that I took off my Bill Mitchell 454 SBC. I put fuel injection on it, so don't need these any more. I suspect it is 'way too big for the 383 but thought I would offer anyway. I also have a brand new, in the box 600 cfm Edelbrock Performer series, but that is probably too small....?? Wayne -
Got it, V...good to go...Although the only thing left of the original Dynomax is the outside chrome stuff....I replaced the crazy 1.5 inch inside ID mufflers with full 3 inch race mufflers. Good luck on your hunt... Wayne
-
V..you don't like the looks of the ones on my hot rod? Pic attached Wayne
-
You got it, Rick....actually a lot of room if you come out as forward as possible....That will be a cool look to hid them behind the side skirts, ala Viper, eh? As I say, they get pretty loud because of where they come out and, after driving 20 miles or so, it is kind of a relief to shut it off...) I am sitting in a motel in Panama City FL spending the night because I have the hotrod going on the dyno for some tuning tomorrow...I put fuel injection on it and believe there is more to be had with some tuning. We'll see tomorrow. Wish me luck... Wayne

Fits under the chrome cover Wayne

GV, Here are the pics I promised....if you have any questions, just ask. Wayne

Hey, GV, thanks for the props....Actually, my pipes come out before the TC cups where the frame is angled up, so you can get them up there off the ground. I actually dumped the patriout mufflers, kept the chrome turn-downs and the chrome bend at the front and replaced with 3" id race mufflers. I made the whole thing the same length as the patriots by welding 3" pipes to each end. I will take more pics from different angles and take pics of the muffler setup and post so folks can see what I am talking about. Wayne
-
Vin, You didn't read my last two sentences....Please do. I can see the difference between our installations by your pic. My pipes come over and almost touch the T/C bar forward of the mounting point. yours go way underneath. Note in my pics that neither of my pipes is lower than my oil pan....so no clearance problems and I drive some pretty rough roads. Wayne
-
Gvincent...I have experience with installing side pipes...the patriot style...I agree with whoever said they are restrictive, but that only applies to my application..."Crazy" Cole aka Cozy Cole is right in the respect of comparisons of old power and new power. I needed to go side pipes because I didn't have enough room to go over or under the 9 inch Ford and 4 link. I also have a 600 hp motor so need something that will breathe. When I looked at the inside of the Patriots, they looked to be maybe 2 inches or less inside diameter. I assembled them, trial fitted for length of where they would dump (I have a wide-body conversion so they had to be just right to dump before the fender extensions), pulled them off and marked the garage floor for the correct length. I then purchased some 3" id race mufflers, some 3" pipe and fabbed the correct length so they would fit the chrome pieces that came with the system. The OD on the mufflers is 4.5 inches, so the Chrome covers also fit. I am running 1 7/8" primary block huggers, but had to re-route the steering on the driver side and box the frame on the passenger side to fit the bigger headers in because they don't tuck as close to the block as the 1 1/2 or 1 5/8 headers do. I run 3" tubing from the collectors to the pipes so I have 3" all the way back. The are louder than I care for but it is really hard to quiet down three inch pipes with those mufflers. Anyway, I don't have any clearance issues, I have not notched the frame and I drive it quite frequently, as well as to the track and back (about 40 miles round trip). pics are attached. Hope this gives you an idea of some different ways of doing things. Wayne

Chevy small block Mighty Mouse with 25-30mpg!
rytherwr replied to AMV8(1day)'s topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
Mike, I don't believe you can take a standard SBC block safely out any further than 4.125. All of the bigger SBC I know about use aftermarket blocks specifically made for either larger bore, taller deck or both. I have a Bill Mitchell 454 special edition in my Z and it is built on an aftermarket block from World Products. Wayne -
I just got off the phone with Lauren at S&S Headers and have ordered a set of coated 5205 headers that fit a SBC - 240/260Z in the set-back position (he says). I will let you know in three weeks or so after I get them. According to Lauren, they won't fit a 280Z. These are 1 3/4 tube items, so they may be a little big for standard SBC applications, but they should be good for my app. You can also find some comments on the recent post 'Angle Plug/Headers' question as well as go to "exhaust", type in "headers" and you can read lots more. Hey Rick, good to hear from you and thanks for the kudo's...you don't know the screw-ups that I haven't 'fessed up to, so I may still qualify...) Did I read "twin turboed" for the shark-mobile? WOW! can't wait to see that one!

Hey Turbomeister, I'm famous for screwing things up and having to revamp....I should have put the PG in the first time but thought I would be doing a lot more cruising than I am. Once I felt the power of this combo, I just wanted more and I didn't have the right combination. The 1050 actually made a bit more power, but the driveablility of the FI is superb and with some tuning, I believe I can get back to where I was (dyno'd at 610hp at the flywheel). I'm using an FI system from an outfit called MassFlo. I hate to admit this in public, but the ECU and sending units are from a 93 mustang, however the MAF unit is an 85mm unit from GM with a signal conditioner to make it work with the Ford EEC IV. Works great...startup is instantaneous and idle is fantastic even with the big cam. By the way, I've been admiring your engine for a long time...I'm 85% complete with a Toyota 4.7 custom built with forged SBC H-beams, Ross piston/Ring package, hardwelded/reground cams for boosted apps....I am going supercharged, turbo charged, nitroused and alcohol injected. Turbo is an STS system that installs where the muffler used to be and the supercharger is a TRD unit. I believe I can run them both pretty easy and come out with some good power as well as good bottom end. I'm looking for some fun...) Too many projects..... Wayne

Welcome to Hybridz, 1 Quick Z....that is some serious iron you are talking about. Congrats on the win. We have a lot of fun and exchange a lot of ideas here, so glad to have you with us. Wayne

Deja/Z-Gad...y'all are too kind and thanks....if I could get into Z-Gad territory, I would feel MUCH better....) Of course, you know how that goes...if I could do that, I would be saying "if I could get into JapTin territory........... Wayne

Thanks for the update, John...will let you know what the tuning does. Wayne

Hey, Scottie...many thanks for the kudo's...yes, that thing is so heavy I had to lift it with my engine crane. Great for cruising with the 4.11 rear gears, but I am not going spend as much time cruising as I thought. Can't compete with the simplicity and shifting speed of the PG I put in (also has a trans brake that I haven't used yet) even when I had the trans controller set on kill. I will either sell the whole system or save it to put behind a 632 cu in street motor that I am dreaming about putting in a hot rod truck that may come after I get my other projects done....H-m--m-m-m, let's see, that should be about the time I turn 82 or so...) Wayne

That's one of the many things I like about this site and the folks who frequent it...always super support and valid info/advice and I sure appreciate...let me try to answer some of the posts/questions: Paz8 - Thanks...street manors are great...loud, obnoxious, but great! Of course, it is built for straight-line stuff, so it doesn't pull G's sideways (and I hope I don't find out... ) rides kinda stiff. I would trust it to drive pretty much anywhere at this point, however, after 30 miles or so, it is a relief to shut it off...side pipes come out next to my ears, but I love the sound. 3" id mufflers are pretty hard to keep reasonably quiet with short pipe runs. And yes, it is very hard to keep my foot out of it! Been known to shift to neutral and cruise past the local constabulary. Hey Mike...long time no see...I think I read a few posts where you had made some serious progress on the vette and the Z...congrats. I will try to get some video...I don't have a camera, but know some friends who do...stand by for some at a later date. John S - I appreciate the kudo's...old times were 7.27/103 and change...we all kinda figured there was more to be had just by the mph...knew it was making the power. Didn't do what I expected though...thought I would be down in the 6.4's with the changes...especially with the PG. I believe it has the potential after some tuning of the FI. Which brings me to: My friends at JNJ- Hey John....great minds think alike ) My intent exactly, especially with the FI system. I am using a Ford ECU with off-the-shelf Ford sending units with the exception of the MAF...it is an 85mm Vette item. I run a signal conditioner between it and the ECU as the two signals aren't compatible without the conditioner. Panhandle Performance does some serious Ford work down in Panama City FL for a buddy of mine who specializes in centrifugal blown Mustangs. From what I've seen, he does a super job with the Ford stuff and has an in-house dyno. Will do that before the year is out, hopefully. Thanks for the kudo's..and some right back to you, although I was hoping to see the new times on your hot rod...) Wayne

Thanks for the confidence, 'G', I believe we can put it in the 6.3/4's in the 1/8th or high 9's in the 1/4 and still be streetable if I can get my stuff in one bag...will keep on trying. Wayne
-
Hey, olie05, Glad you are watching out for me....b-u-t....if you had read a little farther down and looked at my signature, you would have noticed that my time is 1/8th mile...the same time is posted there. I don't believe I've ever heard of a streetable car running in the 6's in the 1/4. Still nice to know someone is reading this stuff, eh

Update on the monster motor in my 240Z...Changed over from 1050 Dominator/World Products single plane intake to MassFlo fuel injection running 42 lb injectors. Also went to a built powerglide vice 4L80E. Drove it 53 miles yesterday, then drove to the track last night, let the air out of the tires to 13.5 lbs and proceeded to run a bunch of 6.7's. I was pretty happy with that, but I believe there is more in the car after some more tuning. Ran about 16/17 runs....9 of them back-to-back to prove it is a streetable combo for the naysayers that were at the track...stayed right at 180 degrees the whole time. Bill Mitchell builds a heck of a motor!!! Aired the tires back up and headed 13 miles back to the house. Last test and tune of the year for this track, so will have to wait until Jan to test out the tuning. YeeeeeHaaaaaawwwww. Wayne
