  1. Okay, while traveling south on 395 at around 5:00ish I saw an RV trailering a red 280z (or other s30 chassis) with a 3-piece BRE-style spoiler. It was a quick glimpse, but it looked pretty slick - WHO WAS IT???

After leaving Yosemite today, I know I'll be returning in the future (I gotta come better prepared to hike the multi-mile trails), and when I do I'll plan on spending some time at Lake Tahoe.

Man, the heat is nothing here - it's great! Workers at Yosemite were encouraging everybody to drink plenty of water because the temps were supposed to get a little over 100*. It felt like 85-90* in Texas weather. I should probably hold my tongue, though, because tomorrow I'll be stopping at Death Valley - maybe it'll convince me otherwise.

Mr. Pariah - thanks for the offer, but we left San Fran. two days ago - I'm in Bishop, CA right now. It seems like a nice little place to live - small quiet town surrounded by mountains. I stopped at the local Kragens here (looks exactly like AutoZone) and borrowed a crescent wrench so I could remove the headlight assemblies to remove the bulbs. The bulb is still good, so I have a short somewhere. I already have 4 test lights and didn't feel like buying another one to figure out where the short was coming from (pos. or ground); plus they were closing within the next few minutes, so I'll fix them when I return home.

I keep reminding myself that it's just a higher cost-of-living, and to not get offended by them ripping me off for hotels, food, etc. From what I've heard, I couldn't imagine trying to buy real estate here - I would be doing it backwards. It's CA to TX, not TX - CA (from a financial point of view, anyways).

    So, here's a few overly-common tourist pics:

And sorry, not a Z, but still definately a looker:

I have a closer picture of it somewhere

  2. I grew up in SoCal and you should have seen it 15 years ago. The roads were nice and smooth and it wasn't 50 million people on the freeway. PCH is a very beautiful drive with the ocean views. Cali has a lot of natural beauty but the population growth is driving down the quality of everything else.

I've heard the same thing from people that have lived in Austin for a while - at least you were around at that time to enjoy it. I still enjoyed driving through the L.A. area.

I'm up in Lodi; you probably passed within a few miles of my house on your way to Yosemite! There are thousands of miles or pretty empty roads, once you get off the main path.

Too bad I didn't know this earlier, I could've used your place as a pit stop so I can fix the high-beams on my little crapbox (and of course check out your Z).

if you can go out of the east side of yosemite and head north on hwy 395 and check out lake tahoe.there are some dumpy cheap old hotels on the west side of harvey's casino that arent bad -but arent good but doable to avoid expensive hotel.harrahs buffet on the top is good for dinner.problem with cali is expensive cost of living and high taxes.plus crowded cities and high crime in some places.the best places in cali arent known by tourists

I just looked at it on the map, and it's a bit too far out of reach for us - we have everything plotted out and have certain checkpoints that we need to be at certain times. The pictures on the internet make it look very appealing, though. Thanks anyways for the tip.

We finished hiking a few miles today, yielding some great panoramic views. Tonight we'll head to glacier point for some astronomy, and tomorrow we plan on visiting the sequoias before out departure.

*Another side note, have any of you witnessed or received tickets from aircraft? I've seen the signs everywhere and have had several random pops chirp from my radar detector, but no signs of aircraft. Just curious...

  3. I've always wondered why all of the car enthusiasts chose to stay in Cali, despite the pointless and annoying smog/emissions laws.

I took my vacation this week to head to California - a road trip that's been planned for months. We (g/f and I) took I-10 from Texas to SoCal. As soon as I entered L.A., I was unimpressed with the roads, and prayed it was just the area I was in. Well, yesterday I drove from L.A. to Castroville on CA-1 - GOOD GRAVY this place is GORGEOUS! I've never driven on so many windy twisties around mountains, and an awesome view of the ocean to compliment everything. From Castroville we hopped on 101 to San Fran., and just about an hour ago I finished making the drive from San Fran. to Yosemite nat'l park...again, yet another amazing drive. We hiked a few trails so far, and have a lot more planned for tomorrow, but the scenery here is speechless.

Although, I will admit, the one vehicle I wish I had with me is my R6 - especially when I was stuck in San Fran. traffic, since it's legal here to ride between vehicles (lucky!!). Unfortunately I was unable to bring a Z - it seemed more feasible to drive the little Hyundai sh*tbox, since it get's 30+mpg, has a/c, and is still a 5 spd.

I can see what motivates people here to cruise without a destination. I also went up to see the Hearst Castle, and wow! The whole experience was   . The view of the bay from Alcatraz was very photogenic as well.

Anyways, just wanted to share how awesome the landscape is in this state of Cali. I don't know how I can ever return to the flat, boring roads of Texas. I mean, we have a mild hill country around Austin, which is okay, but after driving through Cali, I don't think I'll ever feel the same about them.

As a side note, in the past 2 days I've seen 26 of the new 2010 Mustangs already...what the hell? I didn't think they were that great - maybe it's a Cali thing. I also saw my first Lambo in person a couple of days ago while eating in Hollywood - much sexier in person, might I add. Okay, I'm done now.

  4. I did something similar, flew to Regina, SK and drove back to Vancouver Island. It was a great experience, and the best $1200 car I ever drove. ;) Bought it off a hybridZ member too, though I don't see him around here anymore.

1,906km according to Google maps, not quite as long as your trip.

    TimZ's 280zxt?

  5. Funny, I just saw one of those for the first time yesterday. I was walking to my truck to leave for work, and I heard a v8 accelerating from the stop light nearby. It was brief, but reminded me of an old-school muscle car note...maybe I was still waking up and disoriented, who knows. Anyways, I looked up to see a white R8 passing by. I stared it down until it sped out of sight. Although I didn't really care for the pictures of it upon its release, after seeing it in person, I agree, it's seriously a cool car.

  6. but for an 800 horsepower car? save yourself the pennies and time of doing the legwork and go with a proven product.

Who is the "proven" product. I'm not trying to go cheap with this build, and especially not on a wheel spacer, but this eBay spacer was the only one I could find with the 4.5 x 5 lug pattern and the 2" thickness.

I ran 1.6" Spacers for 5years on my fairly modded ZX Turbo....no where near 650whp, no issues.

Porsche 911 Turbos (pre '89) ALL come with 1" spacers in the rear from the factory and these cars as you know frequently see well north of 500whp but use longer studs not studs on studs like the eBay spacers for our cars.

    Yasin

I knew Porsche used wheel spacers, but I wasn't sure exactly what their setup was. I was thinking that the studs on studs spacer was more safe than using longer wheel studs and a slide-on spacer, because it wouldn't put as much stress on the same stud...

I bought some adapters from that same vendor.

They serve my purpose (space out my 18" Titan rims on the front of my 620 pickup so the tires don't rub on the frame)

But a few points to be aware of:

-Make sure you know the thread pitch that will come on the adapters you buy. They may say it's for a particular vehicle, but they are usually inferring just the lug pattern and hub bore size, not the original thread pitch of the lugs you have! Case in point - I got 12mmX1.5 thread pitch when my lugs were 12mmX1.25, so maybe you have nice chrome lug nuts that you won't be able to use anymore and have to buy more.

-They are not 'hub centric', ie. the bore on the adapters have enough clearance to ensure they will fit for the application, so they are not fitted per say to the exact dimension of your hub, and much less obviously your wheel bore (I know you are talking about the rear only, just pointing out).

-They 'feel' cheap - very light feel to them (I don't know if higher quality aluminum would feel any 'beefier', I'm just saying). Is 6061 aluminum the best? Or even verifiable? Also probably pointing out the obvious -Made in China- so you are getting what you pay for at those prices !

-Peronally, I don't think I would trust them to hold up in a 500hp+ application!

    Hope this helps.

I'm not too worried about the lugnuts, because I can always buy the correct thread and pitch, but if the studs come as m12x1.5, that's the same as the current lugnuts I'm running.

I guess what I need to look for is, who makes a reputable wheel adapter in the 2" thickness that I need?

  7. I did search, and know this topic has been discussed, but not this particular configuration. I have a pair of 17x10.5 cobra wheels for my widebody project. I currently have 17x9 wheels bolted to the rear, and it looks like if I bring them out 2" more, the 17x10.5 would fill the wheel/flare gap pretty well, and they'll clear the struts. I'm looking at these: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Wheel-Adapters-5-Lug-Mustang-T-Bird-Ranger-Spacers-2_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trkparmsZQ7c301Q3a1Q7c293Q3a1Q7c294Q3a30QQ_trksidZp4634Q2ec0Q2em14Q2el1262QQhashZitem5ad1529965QQitemZ390058908005QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories

I'm wondering if these should be okay to use as a wheel adapter. The drivetrain will be a supercharged v8, and I'm planning on having it set to run 650-800rwhp. I've never ran adapters before, and the only negative thing I read about them on this website, as well as others, is to use a good one and not a cheap piece of crap. This ebay adapter looks good to me, but how do I know if it's a pos or not? Plus I didn't read many people running the 2" spacer - most were 1" - 1.25". Any potential / notorious hazards with this?

  8. If the mas was damaged it's possible to be causing a lean condition. However, you could also have a large vacuum leak somewhere (above the intake manifold, most likely, since both banks are running lean) and the PCM has added enough fuel to where it's passed the fuel trim's parameter threshold and threw the code. This is how I would view it from ford - I don't know how different GM would be. Usually if the O2 sensors are bad or not switching, you will have stored codes for them as well (again, used to ford). Just guessing off the top of my head, I would say the mas would be the culprit. Is the intake obstructed? (possibly from the wreck?) If the fuel pump is going out, it could cause the lean condition. Just talking off the top of my head from the most common problems I see; I'm kinda worthless without my diagnostic equipment - hope any of this helps.

  9. I'm looking for some cheap door panels for my '76 280z. I don't care if they're from '75 - '78, as long as the vinyl is all intact (no tears, rips, etc.) and it fits a coupe (not a 2+2).

Also, lately my e12-80 (early 280zx ignition module - '79 and '80 I believe) ignition module has been cutting out going down the highway, so if anyone has a used one that was in good working condition, let me know.

    Let's see what you have!

  10. 3 of my Zs had that distinctive smell which I've grown accustomed to. Then there's the '82 that reaked of gear oil (which dominates over any other stench, IMO) - changing the carpet out fixed that problem. The '83 was female owned, so it possessed an overwhelming perfume and (cherry?) air freshner scent, and with my latest buy, the '76, a couple of months ago when I ripped the interior out, I discovered why it smelled like a dead animal...skeleton/hairy remains of a rat stuck to the floorboard under the passenger seat. Now it smells fine, except when I turn the vent on - then a fog of cat piss hits me.

  11. I had an anti-theft killswitch for the fuel pump on my v8 280zx. It was just a normal 670 Holley carb, but there were a couple of times that I would drive off for about 30 or more seconds until the engine would start sputtering out. Initially I would freak out and wonder wtf broke this time, but then I'd remember and flip the switch, while coasting as long as I could before I felt it was safe to release the clutch pedal and get the engine going again. How long was it running?

  12. Saw it at star trek. As soon as the letter "Z" came up in the beginning, they started jabbing me, not knowing it was a 370z commercial. I daily drive several different Zs to work, so it's pretty much my reputation. The commercial was okay...black and goooooold is better though
