the biggest societal erosion, in my opinion, is the long-lost theory of common sense, backed up by a very self-centered trend toward the few knowing what's best for many. the idea of tuning out to what offends is long gone... apparently all others should share the same levels of tolerance (or intolerance?) that drives those to try to sanitize the world we live in. personally, i agree with one's right to be offended, it's just as viable an emotion as any, and i find it hard to judge someone based simply on what they can or can't handle. but if this holds true, shouldn't these people who are so obsessed with social cleansing take some time out from being bothered by everything around them to realize that there are people out there with a different outlook than theirs, and that they have just as much of a right to that as they do to their own opinions?
like george carlin once said, "don't these people realize that there are two knobs on the radio? or are they really that bothered by anything with two knobs sticking out of it?"
along with freedom of speech comes freedom of choice. and any human being on this planet has the right to choose to avoid those situations that might offend them or conflict with their view of what is right or wrong. and it's not people like me standing in the way of people making that decision... it's themselves.
