260ZRED, So how does the MS wiring go?? I have completed the MS1 V3 build and now I am looking at the wiring from the MS to the engine. I have looked at the diagram and most of it looks easy. I am planning on using the relay box setup from EFI 4Tuning and getting a standard MS wiring harness. But I am not sure how to do the fuel injectors. I figure that 3 injectors go to pins 32/33 (green) and 3 to pins 34/35 (blue) but which one to which?? Thanks for your help. HB280ZT

trippintl0, Well for starts I have been running with the MSD-6BTM for about 4 years now and I like it. Also if you were having a problem with a weak spark the MSD should take care of that. As for the optical distributor I was planning on using it because that is the way that I have been setting up the MS-1 V3 board from the start. Now I just need to get back to working on the board one of these days but now that I am back at home I have to many things to do on my car. Oh well I will get it finished in due time. So if anyone has any more good information or questions please let me know. HB280ZT

Mario, Thanks for the help. Now if I can find out who else got this to work and what they did it would really help. As for the spark I will be using the MSD to control the spark so it should help but we will see. I am about 1 to 1 1/2 months away from trying this so until them I just need to get more information so that when I try it I will be as ready as one can be. Thanks HB280ZT

HI All, Well I have been at this for a few days now and everything works nice up till I got to step 65 when it talks about high-current ingition. What I would like to do is the following: V3 board non-MS-II MSnS-E MSD-6BTM 82 turbo distributor 82 turbo motor with mostly stock parts So how do I move forward on this build? The assembly instructions says to go to MSnS-E site but I could not find what I thought I was looking for, instructions on how to install the high-current ingition circuit. Any help would be great!! Also a very stupid question. How do I find out what code was loaded on my chip set? I asked for the Extra code when I ordered it from Glens Garage. Thanks. HB280ZT

Here is a good question that I have not seen anything on. Where is the number located on the tranny to show what model it is?? I know that I have 2 from 82 XZ's but not sure if it is a FS5W71B or the other one. I know it is not a T5 because they were only availible in 83 and they have a removeable bell housing. So like I said where is the number stamped into the case?? Thanks HB280ZT

New 2 Z, So how is the tranny rebuild coming? Please keep us posted on how it goes. I plan on rebuilding mine after the beginning of the year, so any tips or pictures would be great. HB280ZT

ezzzzzzz, I have fully adjustable LCA's and TC rods, with hiem joints and I did not notice an increase in interior nose or a harsher ride after installing them. So not sure what to tell you. If you want I can send you pictures of my setup and let you see what they look like. They are Mike Kelley designed units that he helped me make at the last Virginia Shindig. HB280ZT Chesapeake, Va

That is my thought exactly. My car just does not get out of the turns very good because of the low CR. My friend is running a stock 77 280Z and in a short technical course he beats me evry time. But when the course gets longer and I can get into boost I beat him every time. So that is why I am interested in increasing the CR by about 1 point. As for the flywheel already did that and it helped some, along with a better clutch. Now the magic question is which head is better the N42 or the N47?? Also what should I have done to it other then check for straight, valve job and have my turbo cam installed? Thanks for the help. Also looking at installing the intercooler that I have and a MegaSquirt ver3, a P82 intake manifold, pallnet fuel rail with 460cc injectors and a 60mm TB this winter, along with new frame rails from bad dog products. So I have a bit of work before next season of autocross starts in April. Wish me luck!! HB280ZT

The best tool that I have found so far for looking at what a setup would give you is this one from Atlantic Z: http://www.atlanticz.ca/zclub/techtips/calcs/engine%20builder/index.html Now if it could only tell you what will happen if you have to surface your head or deck, that would be really cool!! This thread is great!! I was just wondering how to increase the compression ratio on my 82 turbo Z motor, the low compression ratio is killing me on short autocross tracks. So by changing out the P90 head for a N42 head Drax240z increase CR. However the P90 head was for the turbo motor so what is the trade off between the P90 and the N42? Also will any other head work if I can not find an N42. Thanks HB280ZT

New_2_z, You will have to keep us posted on how the rebuild goes. I will be doing an 81 5-speed this winter and here is where I was going to get the parts from: http://www.drivetrain.com/nissian4_5sprwd.html Hopefully they can help you. Good luck! HB280ZT

HizAndHerz, Thanks for the information, that was what I was looking for. Now I just need to get finished with the autocross season and then it will be time to start taking things apart and fixing them. Thanks again. HB280ZT

Hi All, Well I did a search and did not find what I was looking for so here goes. I need to find the setup or adapter to attach the 10si alt to my 82 ZXT motor. In another post they mentioned a bracket but not where to get it?? Also what do I do to upgrade the 77 280Z wiring to work with the internally regulated alternator. Thanks for your help. HB280ZT

Hi All, Have you thought about saving your pennies and getting a real Vette motor! Say a new LS7 with the 6 speed? If I had the time and could save the money that is what I would do. Just a thought. HB280ZT

82 ECU/wiring harness install in 1977 280Z
HB280ZT replied to HB280ZT's topic in Ignition and Electrical
Bumble Zee I got my switched voltage from the Z ignition harness under the dash, wire BY. This went to the Y wire of plug #2. As for the B/W it came from the ECU. To show that my B/W wire was getting the correct signal it powered the fuel pump as it should. However I still did not get a spark. So should I use the B/W wire that is part of the Z harness that was used to power the original coil?? I will have to look into this one. Where did you get your switched power from in your setup?? Thanks for the help!! HB280ZT -
82 ECU/wiring harness install in 1977 280Z
HB280ZT replied to HB280ZT's topic in Ignition and Electrical
Bumble Zee, Thanks for the information. As for my setup my crank sensor is in the distributor, 82 setup. Not really sure how to clean it other then spraying it with contact cleaner. As for timing I believe I had that setup correctly. Now about getting power to the ECU during cranking, mine had a green light before and during cranking. I also got the fuel pump to prime the system then shut off . The only item I did not check is if I was getting power to the ignitor during cranking. But I was using the same source BW that is supplied to the ECU. HB280ZT -
MaTTSuN, The sensor that I am talking about is located passager side rear of engine head, Cylinder head temperature sensor . As for the 2 on the thermostat housing, driver side front, one is a water temperture sensor (single pin plug) and the other has a single wire with a bullet connector on the end. This sensor i think is called a thermal transmitter, thermotime switch or something like that. But you have to remember that my engine was from an 82 280ZX turbo so yours may have a different setup. As for which is used by the ECU I think both are, that is what I have figured out with my wiring harness. I hope this helps. HB280ZT

Hi All, Hobart was bought by Miller and my Hobart 175 has parts on it that says Miller. It was a good deal and has worked just great over the last several years. As for the frame rails who has used these: http://www.baddogparts.com/ I was looking at using there frame rail covers to fix the problem that I have with damaged frame rails. HB280ZT
-
MaTTSuN, The only time my car ever ran like a tractor it was a bad connection on the Coolant Temperature Sensor in the head. For your problem maybe you have a wire problem between your sensor and the ECU, a short. So I would do a wire check from the sensor to the ECU middle plug YG wire and then try moving the connector as the car is running to see if that changes the symptoms. Good luck!! On another note at least your swap runs. When I put in my 82 harness and ECU the car would not even run. Oh well, maybe in the next month or so I will try the swap again and hopefully it will work this time. HB280ZT

A quick FI and ignition 280zxt to S30 turbo swap guide
HB280ZT replied to bumble zee's topic in Turbo/Supercharger
Hi All, Well after a little thinking I wired up the fuel pump without any problems. I also got a good green lite on the ECU but I never got any fire!!! So I checked and cleaned all of my connections and even replaced the ignitor with a new one from my local parts house and still no fire. I posted a write up here: http://forums.hybridz.org/showthread.php?t=103683 hopefully someone can tell me what to try when I do this again. I will do this again because my car ran poorly when I raced it at Roebling Roads Raceway in Georgia the other day. Bad enough that a very tired stock 77 280Z could keep up with me all the way around the track and in the corners they could pass me so I had to let them pass in the passing areas. So I really need your help to get this thing of mine running on the 82 turbo Z ECU and wiring harness. HB280ZT -
Hi All, I know several of you have done this so what did you do??? I am back to my old setup so I have a few weeks before I try the 82 ECU swap again, so any information would be helpful. Pictures would be great! HB280ZT

HI All, Well my 82 turbo motor is not running up to par, it has a miss or a hesitation, not sure which it is but the car just stumbles. So today I checked the plugs, cap and rotor, the wires and did a compression test to see how things were and here is what I found: Plugs all looked good. The cap and rotor was good also. The wires checked out. Compression test. #1 - 118 and 115 psi #2 - 115 and 115 psi #3 - 115 and 115 psi #4 - 118 and 115 psi #5 - 115 and 115 psi #6 - 115 and 115 psi I understand that max pressure is 142 psi and min is 100 psi and that all cylinders are within 10%. Just as a reference the motor only has 35,000 miles on it!! So what to do??? HB280ZT

82 ECU/wiring harness install in 1977 280Z
HB280ZT replied to HB280ZT's topic in Ignition and Electrical
Well I am back and can finally post a reply to MattSun's post. To start with the engine did run because it has been in my car for about 6 years and has been running, sorta!! As for the connectors yes I did clean them with contact cleaner and I tried to scrap them if possible. As for how I did the wiring here is what I did, it is long!! I am using parts from an 82 turbo 280ZX. Computer AFM Distributor and shaft Wiring harness Wiring harness configuration: Plug #1 Br – Brown to battery G – Green to battery Plug #2 near ECU YW - Yellow/White: goes to the ignitor (I used the LW Blue/White wire that was in the harness to run the signal out to the coil; I used the YW wire between the empty terminal and the y wire) Y – Yellow: is the start signal (I ran a wire to the BY Black/Yellow wire on the 77 harness under the dash) Plug #3 at battery G – Green: 12v constant taken from the battery BW – Black/White: 12v switched LR – Blue/Red: fuel pump signal to fuel pump relay pin 86 Ignitor BW – Black/White: used BW wire from the harness 12v Switched YW – Yellow/White: from plug #2 via LW wire Fuel pump relay 85 – Ground to chassis and B on EFI relay 86 – Signal from ECU via LR wire from plug #3 87 – 12 volts to pump 30 – Constant power from battery I hope someone can find a problem because at the race track the other day the car was running very rich and it smoked up the track pretty good!! Also with it running that rich I had problems with the car running over 4500 rpm's, you see it would lean out over 4500 rpms and ping like crazy. HB280ZT -
GetZ, I was in the process of adding the 82 harness and other parts to my 77 280Z with the 82 turbo motor. I just did the check you talked about and found that my ignitors where bad. I also asked about how to hook up my MSD unit to the 82 turbo harness. However at this time I have run out of time to play with this setup. So I am in the process of swapping back to the 77 harness and ECU. I will check all of my parts and try again when I have about 1 month to play with it. Also I would like to do an end to end wiring check to make sure I do not have a bad wire. I will post what I did later and maybe someone can tell me if I missed something. Thanks for the help. HB280ZT
