    MS Wiring

Hi All, Well I have a few quetions that I have not found a good answer to yet. Here goes: 1 - Switched power - which will I need, run or a run/start switched power? 2 - should I use a relay to make a good power source switched power vice pulling it off of some wire within the old system? 3 - Wiring size for a MSD fuel pump, should I use the 14 guage wire that comes in the pre-made wiring harnesses or move up to a 10 guage? Thanks for you .02!! HB280ZT
  2. Hi All, Where to start. I have a MS Ver 3.0 board that came with a code installed. At this time I have the board built but not ready to install in my car. So how do I see what code was installed? I have looked in the instructions but I must not been able to find this simple process. So if someone can put me in the right direction then I can answer the given question. Thanks for the help. HB280ZT
  3. Hi All, Well I have most of my 280ZX rear brake conversion done but I can not figure out what SS brake line to use. I did a search but found no information on what lines people used so hopefully someone can help me. Here is exactly what I have. 1977 280Z Maxima brackets 82 280ZX calipers and rotors The only issue is how or which brake line to get that will make this setup work? I could just use the Earls SS line I have but it would require a steel line and an adapter to make the setup work. What I would really like is one line that attaches to the caliper and the factory brake line. So if anyone can point me in the right direction that would be great. Also now that I think about it how did you all route your e-brake cables?? HB280ZT
  4. Hi All, Well I put these brakes on my 77 about 6 months ago and they are great. I even managed to use my 15" snowflake rims. I just had to use a 1/2 spacer to clear the calipers, but I want just a bit more clearance so I will have to add some thin aluminum shims say 1 mm more. You also need to grind down the end of the lower control arm so that they do not rub under cornering. I went all the way down to the ring on the inside of the LCA. If you turn the LCA over and look at the lower ball joint area you will see the inner supporting metal. Also I removed enough of the lip so that when I turned my wheel the rotor will not rub around the sides. I wish I could post some pictures but for some reason I can not post them. If you have any questions or want some pictures drop me an e-mail and I will send you a few. Enjoy the brakes. HB280ZT
  5. I am also running the 225/50 15 G-Force sports on my 77 280ZT and they are great for the price. I ran them all last autocross season plus a drivers education day at Roebling Roads Raceway and I will run them again this year. They are a great tire, enjoy! HB280ZT
  6. Jon, Any year in particular? Thanks for the help! HB280ZT
  7. Hi All, Well I did a search and came up with lots of good information but not what I needed. I have been looking around for some longer studs and lug nuts to fit on my 1977 280Z. Well I found some nice ARP studs #7708 series but I can not find lug nuts to fit my rims. I am running the 81 Turbo rims aka Snowflakes. I have longer studs on the front off of a Nissan Quest but they are not long enough to run with open ended lug nuts. So what to do?? Here is some info about what I need I need in either 12 x 1.25 or 1.5: shank diameter .745 shank length .640 Washer diameter 1.185 Washer thickness .120 I can go either 12mm x 1.5 or 1.25 or anything else that will fit my rims as long as I can obtain both studs and open end lug nuts. Any .02 would be great! HB280ZT
  8. One of the things about Carbotech is that if you send them an old par of your pads they can put there material on them. http://www.carbotecheng.com/main.htm Just a thought! HB280ZT
  9. No I have not got it working yet. Mostly because I am not to that point in my winter rebuild. I am just now finishing up the body work that I needed to do, ie frame rails and floor pans!! Now I have some electical, engine and transmission work to do. Not to mention the intercooler and other plumbing. So if things work as planned (fat chance) I hope to do the MS in March. Will keep you posted how things go. HB280ZT
  10. HizandHerz, The wiring part would really help. I am up to my *** in winter fix items and if you could give us a detailed write up of how you did the wiring that would be great. Thanks for the help. HB280ZT
  11. As for the brake indicator switch I am planning on keeping it but I am still thinking about replacing the NP-valve with a proportioning valve. Thanks for the help. HB280ZT
  12. I would love to go with the rears that Dave has but I need an emergency brake right now. Also I don't have the money right now to do that conversion. Basically I am just tiring to get the car back together after new floor pans, frame rails, minor engine work and major electrical work to include a MegaSquirt V3 system. So for now I will just have to put the big brake kit on hold and just do the 280ZX conversion. So if I remove the NP-valve and replace the top part with a coupler and the proportioning valve on the bottom it should work fine? Thanks for the help. HB280ZT
  13. John, I am currently running the Wilwood setup that Dave at ARIZONAZCAR.COM RACING BRAKE KITS FOR 1970-1978 Z on the front and I have all of the parts except the lines for the 280ZX rear disc brakes conversion. I also am running the 15/16 master cylinder. Other then that it is stock. I hope this answers your question. HB280ZT
  14. Come on guys! No one here has ever tried to replace the NP-valve with something else, say a proportioning valve?? How do the people who race there Z's setup there brakes?? Do they get rid of the brake indicator switch or the NP-valve or both?? Any .02 is appreciated. HB280ZT
  15. Not sure about the crush synchro but I am still tiring to figure out which tranny that I have. There has to be a marking of some kind on the tranny to designate what it is. So if someone knows where that is I would appreciate that alot. As for the rebuild how is it going so far?? Also how much was the rebuild kit and have you started on the disassembly yet? Any tips or other note worth things that I should know before I try this? Thanks for anyone help. HB280ZT
  16. New 2 Z, So any news on the tranny rebuild?? I am debating on whether of not to do the rebuild or to just farm it out to a Z shop. I already have the tranny out so it would just require me to drop it off at the shop. The only thing is the price of $600 to have the work done. So any news would be great and any tips would be even better. HB280ZT
  17. Hi All, Well my question tonight is whether I need the NP-valve or not?? What I am thinking about doing is replacing it with a proportioning valve on the rear side and a coupler for the front. Will this work or will it cause problems? For the poeple who say what is an NP-valve?? It is located after the brake indicator switch on my 1977 280Z. It is located on the firewall, drivers side near the tranny bellhousing. From my reading in the FSM it is in the system to prevent the rear wheels from locking up. So if I get rid of it as part of my rear disk brake conversion will it cause any problems? Also is there an adapter that I will need to put in the proportioning valve an coupler?? Thanks for your help. HB280ZT
  18. Jon, Thanks for your post. That is what I was thinking about doing but I just wanted to see what other people did incase someone came up with something different that worked. I was also wondering if anyone has tired the clip on type of harness? That way when you are not racing you just unclip the lap and sub belt. The harness attaches to a eye bolt, that way like I said you could remove them when not in use. I saw this awhile back but can not find it again. Also with factory 1977 style high back seat which type of harness did you all use? I am looking at attaching it to the strut tower mounting brace on a tab welded to the mount. I am looking at the strut tower brace from PDK. Any .02 would be great. HB280ZT
  19. Hi All, So no one here has ever put a 4 or 5 point harness into a 280Z. I find that hard to believe. So if anyone has please let me know how or where you hooked in the lap and sub belts. Thanks for your help. HB280ZT
  20. Hi All, Well did a search and found some information about how to mount the rear parts of the 4 or 5 point harness but nothing on how or where to mount the lap and sub belts. So if anyone has information and pictures that would be great. Thanks HB280ZT
  21. OK, now I am straight on that part. On my MS1 V3 build if I want to use the 82 turbo dist what setup would I have to enable on the board?? I think I already set it up for the VR/Hall but that can be changed if needs be. I am looking to use both spark and fuel on the engine setup. Thanks for the help. HB280ZT
  22. Give Barry a call at East Coast Z Car Center 1-866-543-6608 (toll free) He says he has 2 sets left!! HB280ZT
  23. Ok now I am confused!! I thought that the Turbo distributors 82-83 had the VR output (CAS) built in the the distributor with no advance system. I know the 81 had a Crank sensor better known as a CAS and a dummy dist. Where as the earlier dist had a 6 pickup magnetic sensor output and a mechanical and vaccumm advance. So the dist that you need to use is the turbo dist from 82 or 83 not the earlier ones?? Am I off here or not. HB280ZT
  24. Hi All, So I guess no one has done this mod yet?? When I get to that point in the build I will post what I did to make a fan work with the MS1 V3 board running Extra code. I am thinking that it should work the same as with the 2.2 board but use the JS0 output as the input in to the transistor and then to a relay to control the on/off of the fan. HB280ZT
  25. Hi All, Well I did a search on this site and the MS site about electric fan control using MS extra and a V3 board but I did not find much. I found that the fan control take off is JS0 for the V3 board and that I could use a circiut like envmyz discribes in this post for the 2.2 board. http://forums.hybridz.org/showthread.php?t=102642&highlight=fan If someone has more informatin please let me know. I am looking at controlling one 16 inch fan using my MS system. Thanks! HB280ZT
