4L60E OR T56 YOUR CHOICE AND WHY FOR THE LS1Z
LS1 Z replied to LS1 Z's topic in Gen III & IV Chevy V8Z Tech Board
Right on John! I agree with you! Mike (MAS280) Said wait till monday and drive his RX7-LS1(t-56) and make my decision then. Then there is always the auction ending before that... Well, I still want opinions please! The T-56 is at a decent deal. I also wonder about my cross member and drive shaft. John at John's cars owes me a favor from a mix up from my 4L60E drive shaft. You, Mas, Mike Knell, Iflyfast, Phantom, and all of you can help me with the rest, With like the hydralics and stuff! Can you tell where I'm leading? As for the Auto.. From G.M. My cost is 1,400. Then you have around 700.00 or so for a torque converter, plus a shift kit. Or my rebuilder to go through my trans and.... I'm not sure Thanks Joey -
I want your opinions!!! As most of you know, I built my Z with the 4L60E. The trans went out today. I will do an update with details later. I'm thinking about switching to a 6 speed. I liked the auto till it broke. Then all these thoughts are going through my head...... The Z being a sports car should be a 6-speed? I think the 1/4 mile times will be better with the auto. But... The car is not gonna be a 1/4 mile track car. I wanna be part of the 11 second club. Possible with a manual? My plans for the car are to drive it the way she wants to be driven!! Mountain roads, Freeway and around town. Please let me know your personal opinions! THANK YOU- YOU GUYS ARE GREAT! JOEY

Hey Vann!! I can key in on this one and sure others will follow!!! #1 and main one is you don't want your T.B. connected to your rad overflow! Get rid of the coolant lines to your T.B. and put vac plugs on them. Looks nicier. You want to keep the intake air cool, not warm it up! Connect your radiator overflow tube to your catch tank. #2 Contact JTR and get a "T" and splice it in to your upper hose. Connect the outlet of the "T" to the rail under your intake. (where the other T.B. hose was connected). Mike Knell supplied mine he will know whitch one you will need. #3 After all this is done... Pull off upper hose at radiator and fill up motor with Dexcool and distilled water at a 50/50 mix. Then fill radiator. LS1 uses Dexcool and I would stick with it. If the car has green coolant.. Flush until clear. #4 As for your 160 t-stat. Acording to MAS280 the 2 Hypertec ones he tried didn't work.(car still ran hot). I followed his advice and removed mine. I would almost think with a 240 or 280 would flow more air through the grill than a 300. JOEY

LS1Z UPDATE #2 PROBLEMS TO PERFORMANCE
LS1 Z replied to LS1 Z's topic in Gen III & IV Chevy V8Z Tech Board
To BRIANN510, Tried to E-mail you didn't work sooo I p.m.ed you. MAS280- The tank is close to empty. Will head across the street tommorrow to fill her up. Let me know when's good for you to work on 2-3 shift (for all of those, I didn't menction I'm hitting the rev limiter before it shifts, nothing that ls1 edit and mas can fix) Also wanna get cam and spring specs! Hey Mike,I did pick something up for you to make your life easier! Phantom, Thanks for the advice, All connections will be soldered! JOEY -
Haven't written in a while. Been driving the car! I was happy with it until I let MAS280 take her for a spin a few weeks ago. He couldn't stop laughing at me and even said he was gonna make a post how slow my Z is Here is the story.... Went over MAS280'S house for computer editing(ls1 edit) and hang out. He asked me if I was happy with the car. I said yes, Feels quicker than my 93 lt1 Vette. After some tuning, let him go for a spin and that's were the laughing started. He said the car is producing 1/2 the power it should. Lacking fuel big time. Tracked it down that day to switch out the 280z pump and put in john's pump. Same problem. At Idle I would have 60 p.s.i., Hard rev the pressure would drop down to 35 p.s.i. Warming the car up one morning at the shop, I started to smell fuel. popped the hood and alot of fuel was spraying all over the engine . The fuel line from the regulator to fuel rail sprung a leak. On inspection the hose collapsed on the in side and broke down. I couldn't even blow through it. Replaced the hose, Now 60 p.s.i. under all conditions. Here comes the power..... Went back again over MAS280'S house last weekend for more tuning. Removed the thermostat. Throught out the day the Z got quicker and quicker. Even Mike is starting to smile. Which is a heck of alot better than laughing. Getting bit by the speeed bug. Gonna look into a cam very soon. Looking for that 11 second range! Mike Knell called me and asked how the car was. I believe his first question was "Fix that fuel problem yet?" Where is the love? I did menction to him my clunking r200 rearend. His solution was take out the solid diff mount and put the stock nissan one in... That lasted one test drive. The diff lifted and took out my e-brake linkage! Back to the solid mount. Ran the problem by MAS280 and of course he had a solution. He gave me a diff mount set up that puts the mount on top of the diff and then bolts inside the tunnell were the straps used to bolt. Right on!! Other than that. My tach has been sent to john's and stilll working on my abbott speedo. Picked up some very nice HID headlights off KASHABI1 gonna install this week. And gonna switch from Shell gas to Chevron to cure a pinging problem at high end. No it is not running lean anymore. JOEY

Fuel pump- Best and quitest.. please help!!
LS1 Z replied to love-my-V8-280Z's topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
I'm using John's pump. By looking at pictures, here, and on the web, I believe it's the Wilber255. Mounted in the same spot as the stock 280z pump. The pump is very quiet. bearly hear it with key on engine off. No surge tank or pre-pump JOEY -
Hey AWD92QSX, JTR and John's cars are two different companys. JTR said they should have mounts ready in the next couple of months. Johns is what I used. 77 280z, no adapter plates, pretty much all bolt in. I love the car and have no complaints. The look, power and drivability of the LS1 is hard to compair to. JOEY
-
Hey Plainswolf, Funny you bring up this topic.... When I first bought my LS1 set up. The guy who sold me my motor offered to sell me adpter plates to use older style mounts. I contacted JTR (Mike Knell). He blew me off saying "I'm a dreamer!!" Thanks Mike! :malebitchslap: Just kidding Mike! John at John's Cars kept on telling me I didn't need adapter plates. John was right and that's the route I went..... To answer the question... I'm not sure if anybody has used adapter plates to mount the LS1 into a Z JOEY
-
The answer is NO!! SBC and LS1 mounting are completely different! Nothing on the 2 are interchangeable. There is always John's or..... P.M. MAS280 and or JTRMIKE. I believe they are working on mounts. GOOD LUCK JOEY
-
I'm one also to say I'm using the JTR rad set up. Taurus 3.8l 2 speed fan in my LS1!! Light in weight, looks good and most important NO-OVERHEATING JOEY P.S. Almost forgot.. great price!!!!!

Hey Mas.... Had a mishap saturday afternoon. Just as I got past the point of no return heading towards Bencia. My L/R valve stem broke and I wrecked the tire. Waiting on Tirerack for a tire. Also my business partner (Kathy) is off camping sooooo I'll have to wait till next Wednesday. What are you bringing out there? Hey Tim!! On that F-body boot... What year and what are you using for a lower boot?? JOEY

HEY JAKE!! Do a search either under my a.k.a. LS1 Z or under John's cars. or Under the topic "ls1 motor mount options" I have pictures of his mounts posted. I have no complaints. and my past post's are pretty well documented as well as QWIK240Z. or p.m. me and I can answer questions JOEY P.S. Somebody else asked turn around time on the project.... I mainly worked on the car on my day off (sunday) I would guess 40 to 60 hours.

stumped on L28 n/a motor problem... need help
LS1 Z replied to ZXR_KiD's topic in 6 Cylinder Z Forums
Remember "Check the basics". I would think(i have my own shop, diagnose all run problems, been doing it for alot of years) Ignition module-car would die on freeway or where ever. Fuel pressure(fuel pump)-Same. What clues me is what you said about your fuel pressure regulator(ruptured diaphram). Sounds like the car is flooding when coming to a stop. If it's ruptured change it. A good way to check is see if the vacume line has gas in it. Or make sure airflow meter is not sticking! Stick your fingers in it and make sure it returns to a closed position. Nice even movement. Good luck let me know!!! JOEY P.S. As for bad gas... I would think you would have run problems. (miss fireing, back fireing ect... -
Been driving the car alot the last few weeks. I love it!! The 3.54 r200 rear end(nismo posi). Seems to be geared just right, maybe a little on the low side. Taking off from a red light, the car is already in third gear by the time I'm through the intersection(driving normal) Foot in it.... The car shifts close to(what i feel-still gotta get my tac to John's) to red line and barks the drag radials!! Tried to power brake to roast the tires! but.... The BFG G-FORCE radials stick like glue and drag the front end The exhaust is very quiet. Open her up and you can hear her. On the freeway in overdrive very nice!! On the shifter and console. The stock Datsun shifter boot is alittle small. So is the leather boot. Went with a Hurst boot. Maybe in the future I'll have a leather one made that is a little bigger. John's Kit.... I thought I would have some problems. Meaning the LS1 is not made to go into a Datsun. No vibrations, Shaking, overheating. The car rides and handles like it was made to be!!! No 1/4 mile times yet... Mas280 almost had me talked into going to Sac today. But... Too much to do around the house. Whats left??!?!? Install speedo box send tac to John's Computer editing.. Gonna take MAS280'S advice and do the quarter the way the car is nowand then edit. My ECU and LS1 edit came from E-bay. I don't know what has been to it. The car does throw alot of codes, EGR, EVAP AND AIS. all soon to be deleted. JOEY

Sanderson Headers for the LS1 Swap - Fitment Questions
LS1 Z replied to qwik240z's topic in Gen III & IV Chevy V8Z Tech Board
On header fitment questions with John's mounts. The answer is YES!!! kHASHABI1 brought his headers by my shop(same as mas280). For a test fit and yes they fit with John's mounts. The oil pressure sender adapter that comes John's vital liquids kit won't work. The header dumps right where the sending unit would be. Gotta get oil pressure where the oem sending unit is, using a 16 m.m. x 1.5 to 3/8 pipe thread. JOEY -
LS1 Radiator Hose Part Numbers
LS1 Z replied to iflyfast1's topic in Gen III & IV Chevy V8Z Tech Board
HEY TOM!! My hoses didn't come with part numbers on them. They are good quality, most likely Gates or Goodyear. Call John. As for the vital fluids kit. The rad hoses will work with, Four row datsun (heavy and expensive) with camaro fans or the JTR radiator and mounting brackets and a 3.8l 2 speed taurus fan.(what i have). I'm not sure about the Griffin rad and Taurus fan. I used the coolant adapter with the stock Datsun sending unit. The oil pressure adapter won't work if you are using the same headers as mine (Sanderson made by Boyd). The headers dump right where the sending unit would be. Options??? You will need to get an adapter to go in where the oem camaro sender is. It is a 16 m.m. X 1.5 thread pitch. P.M. MAS280 for the company that makes it or what I'm gonna do is get an oil drain plug the same size, drill a hole and tap it to the nissan sending unit. I hadto buy 90 degree bent heater hose to atatch to my core. Soo anyways Get the hose numbers, o.p.s. adapter (won't come with the gauge). I'm sure there is another spot for coolant except the big plug where John's goes JOEY P.S. I'll get a hold of you monday or tuesday at latest to check out car after work. And yes I'll get a hold of Mike also! -
I'm interested in a hat, t-shirt and stickers!! Please let me know JOEY thank you

:flamedevil: I'm sooooo excited I'm still working wood!! Had friday off so I went to the shop take care of the wiring and get this baby on the road! Ran the harness through a hole under the battery tray like Phantom recommended a while ago. Dynetec's instructions were pretty clear. Mas280 stopped by and gave me advice on cooling fans. Run off the low speed relay to hight speed on the fan. And oil pressure. With my headers. I can't use John's adapter for oil pressure. I need to get an adapter 16 m.m. X 1.5 to go into the stock hole for the nissan sender. Right now I'm using the G.M. O.P.S. Works but... reads backwards. Then I had "black box" problems. The box has a VATS bypass, which was not working. All done and the ecu is dead. Tried to call Dynatec and guess what... Number disconnected. I had to do alot of Thinking. It was sending the wrong signal to the ECU. Thought of calling Mike Knell and get a bypass unit from him or MAS280 and LS1 edit to bypass it. Then I figured out the "black box" was missing a ground wire throwing the signal off!! This wire was not menctioned in the instruction or wiring diagram. Boom grounded box and she fired up. Can you feel the power!!!!!!!!!!!!! The car sounds and runs sweet. I power is amazing. I put the G-force radials on. Just drove her home from the shop(15 miles). WOW! I'm soo excited. HAULS ASS!!!! Whats left... Install John's speedo adpter Send my tac to John's (stupid dynatec harness is missing tac hookup) centerconsole and tunes clean up wiring YES YES YES THE BEAST HAS BEEN UNLEASHED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! JOEY

Got the fuel system done. Johns pump, to a Edelbrock regulator mounted where the washer bottle was, adjusted to 60 p.s.i. All an6 fittings. I bought steel braided line, but... I had a hell of a time getting them to work. Maybe I'll go back to that later. For now I used Goodyear F.I. hose. Looks good!! and hard to notice or see. Whats left????? Wire the car to the motor the car. Gonna cut a hole on passenger side to run the ecu and black box in the cabin. Calibrate the Johns speedo box Put the center consol back in. Hook up heater hoses Not much!!! I have a 3 day weekend coming up. I'm gonna work on the car during business hours and hopefully not be interupted!!! Also gonna order BFG drag radials G-force 225/50/15. What are the thoughts of 235/60/15 fitting??????? NEXT UPDATE SHE WILL BE RUNNING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! JOEY

Sanderson Headers for the LS1 Swap - Fitment Questions
LS1 Z replied to qwik240z's topic in Gen III & IV Chevy V8Z Tech Board
Jeremy is cool. I've met him a few times. I dealt with boyd. He does all there custom work. And yes I have the larger tubes. My dump flanges are not welded to the header-they rotate 360. Glad to here some good news David!!! JOEY P.S. I'm working on the 2 week dead line!!! -
Sanderson Headers for the LS1 Swap - Fitment Questions
LS1 Z replied to qwik240z's topic in Gen III & IV Chevy V8Z Tech Board
Mine was the third set Boyd at Sanderson made. When I first got them, they were just tack welded. Installed them on the car and was able to bend to were I wanted them. Then went back to Them to weld up and ceramic coat. The only problem I had with Sanderson is Boyd can to a lagger. Took him a few more weeks than what he said. Nice part is Sanderson is only about 30 to 40 minutes from my shop. JOEY -
Looks like I could flip the intake to the other side. Then again the hole on the passenger side looks alittle smaller. Vent tubes? I'm guessing the 240z has hoses attatched to these holes going to the cabin? Where my set is, is where the stock air intake was. Again all the air intake is available from JTR. JOEY
