Which Clutch For T5 W/450-500#Ft. Torque???
Mikelly replied to Mikelly's topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
This post was the product of doing to many things at once...I misspoke when I typed the bellhousing clearance would be more of an issue, and it would, so long as Pete stays with his pan for the Sonic unit, which has far greater ground clearance than the McLeod Unit I ended up with, or the lakewood unit he currently has... Mike -
That's correct... You buy the bearing and lines in the $219 price (Or whatever it is) and the replacement bearing retainer with threaded snout is another $100-130, depending on the transmission... Mine are sitting in a box in the garage right now... I'll be installing them this week. Mike

Which Clutch For T5 W/450-500#Ft. Torque???
Mikelly replied to Mikelly's topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
Pete, I wouldn't scrimp on the clutch disk... Go with the Mcleod disc and re-use your pressure plate. You know that disc is good for the power. I'm sure the Sachs would hold up to a lot of applications, but at the levels you're looking at, I'd wonder when I was going to be doing the swap again... Mike -

Let me give you a little comparison on my own problems with traction... This past weekend the asphault temps at the race track were in the 50s and the car I was driving is a 3250# C5 Corvette. On the back I had 295-35-18s and i'm running 3.42 gearing w/T56 and 386 Wheel HP/382#Ft. torque. I had limited traction at part throttle, but Zero at full throttle in 3rd gear. When I had my 383stroker T56 combo Zcar that weighed in 25XX pounds, I had some minimal traction issues as long as I didn't mash the pedal. But if you got stupid, it would be a smoke fest. I could break the tires loose from 3rd to 4th at over 100MPH for 10-20 feet or more and that was on a 265-50-15 Goodyear. Mike

So Lewis, WHY don't you go back and snip in every time I've said that the SR20DET was one of MY FAVORITE SWAPS EVER? Damn man... I'm done. You have fun with your swap.
-
What's truly sad is the fact that I've been a fan of yours, Lewis. I've also been a fan of the SR20DET swap. However, I'm not gonna play games when it comes to why we run this site the way we do. I've defended your stance a couple of times, both privately in the admin forum and publicly, while trying to be fair and objective. Mike

Lewis, that chip should seriously be left on your side of the keyboard. That thread was full of a lot of garbage from a couple of guys, and it needed locked because quite simply there was more emotion and less fact. John said it best in our offline discussion about locking the thread. People pick a motor for personal reasons first... And often those personal reasons have ZIP to do with practical application. This isn't a statement directed at your choice or anyone elses. It's a statement, PERIOD. That said, I don't expect to ever have to justify why we lock a thread again. When the content waivers and the lines blur enough between fiction and fact, we'll shut it down. The data here on this site lives long after our interests in the topic. We take very seriously the responibility to keep the integrity of that information. If you personally don't like that approach, I can recommend a few service providers for starting your own .com/.org/whatever... Mike Kelly Adminstrator at Large!

I'm running either a 3/4 or 7/8th unit... What's in the car right now. Mike

Actually if I had it to do over again, I'd use that Sonic bellhousing and hydraulic bearing setup. However, I ended up getting the 61-601 and 61-625. I need to install them and finish the wiring, fab up some other stuff, and get the car ready to go to paint in April. Mike

Need Help!! Am I Crazy!! Z W/vette DRIVETrain
Mikelly replied to Jim Rivera's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
I just hosted a Corvette Day at my place last weekend and we had Vettes from 4 generations present. If it were me, I'd not spend $1500 for a front and rear suspension from an 88. YOU can buy the front and rear suspension pieces from the C5 generation brand new for around $1400 for all four upper and lower control arms and uprights. You'd still need the hubs, but I've seen them go cheap on ebay. Point is I bet you could get NEW C4 (84-96) suspension pieces cheaper than the qoute you got! Also, shortening up the track that much each side is going to require tubbing the rear. You're looking at some major work to get it done. However, if you can make it work, you'll have a far superior suspension under that car. My Vette is on the lift right now, as I'm prepping it for a track weekend at Virginia International Raceway's 2.2 mile North Course. Everytime I work on the car, I'm left staring at it and wondering if I should retro-fit it to my Zcar... Mike -
Glad someone else found this thread... Yes, there is an update... I've started some new work I can't leave right now. My wife will be there without me... Such is life. Mike

Who's Interested in a Front Mount for Q45 Diff Install
Mikelly replied to qwik240z's topic in Drivetrain
Because the TOOLS are coming out of the woodwork and commenting negatively in this thread, I'm locking it. If anyone wants to take part in this effort, contact David offline. The rest with their UTTER CRAP comments, take them over to Zcar.com where they will be appreciated. Sometimes I wish for the days when we were a smaller, closer knit community... Mike -
Who's Interested in a Front Mount for Q45 Diff Install
Mikelly replied to qwik240z's topic in Drivetrain
David, Put me down for one. I certainly didn't mean to sidetrack your efforts with my comments to Terry. You are correct that in a few circumstances this part might not work, but for most, it certainly would. Mike -
There may be competition for this one... Jim Pearl (Aka BLKMGK) is planning on stuffing the 800+ BHP motor out of his wrecked 95 Supra into an SC300. It's either that or scrap the driveline in his V8240Z and stuff it in there! Mike

Who's Interested in a Front Mount for Q45 Diff Install
Mikelly replied to qwik240z's topic in Drivetrain
Tread lightly Lason... You're talking about some serious time to fabricate a piece. If it's to pricey for you, then buy a welder, get the appropriate tools to support the fabrication and then make your own... You'll only have better than $1000 in tools to start with. Point is, this guy has made something that, if works will solve a currently non-existant "buy off the shelf" part. THAT is priceless. Billet bling or not, it's "Functional" (assuming this part works) and can't be discounted because it isn't shiny. I'm always amazed at how cheap Zcar guys are when it comes to the price on a non-existant part... Terry I'm gonna whip something up that will use that exact mounting bolt location and use a clevis bracket to mount onto the ears of the Q45 bushings. Dave, maybe you and I should talk offline and your fabricator could make what I've got in mind for your car and make it work... Mike -
For all that think Centerforce clutches are good
Mikelly replied to EZ-E's topic in Miscellaneous Tech
That's been my point all along John. This may be a "for this application" kinda deal. However, you guys are harping on the virtues of the Spec unit, and now two months ago one of our own posted pics of his SPEC unit in the same exact condition as your pics of the DF (Maybe even worse, he posted pics so do a search), and I thought it was from a Turbo L6 car... Word to the wise, be careful in your choices for your application. Don't pick up a screwdriver and expect it to be a hammer. Apparently the Centerforce DF setup for turbo L6 or High HP L6 cars is an issue. Mike -
So you moved back home after living on your own??? And this was gonna be good how, other than helping them? Let me give you some advice Mike. You moved home to help them out. Help them out and leave all your toys packed up. You won't be there long. Focus on them and put your life on hold. You have your whole life ahead of you as theirs is nearing that last sunset... Try to enjoy them while you still have them around and don't expect them to ever understand that you're no longer 12. In their eyes you're still their baby. Enjoy it while you've still got it. Leave the toys in the box. Mike

VA residents (Mikelly and others), emissions/modifications laws in VA?
Mikelly replied to a topic in Non Tech Board
Actually, No. Nitros is not legal. It isn't legal to be hooked up at all. If they catch you with the bottle hooked up, or the line in such a manor that you can reach back from the driver's seat with a wrench and connect it, you can get big fines and they can impound your car. This actually happened to one of the guys I know in the area and his $700 nitros kit cost him about $1500. Nitros = Illegal big time in Va. Mike -
VA residents (Mikelly and others), emissions/modifications laws in VA?
Mikelly replied to a topic in Non Tech Board
County by county... Most counties don't do emissions testing right now, and as far as HybridZs go, in Va. you can get antique tags and drive the car anytime for pleasure within 250 miles of your residence, which means pretty much any state border... You can't use it as primary transportation, but you can drive it most days as long as it isn't your "daily" driver. You aren't required to buy a county sticker, or get state inspections with an antique tag. The car must be 25 years old to qualify. Mike -
So I'm being a... Well, I won't go there... I'm flip floping on the house thing... For now... The wife actually is flipping, and I'm going along for the ride... As most of you know, we have a beagle/Basset Mix dog that is, well let's just say he's not man's best friend. We love him, and the thought of putting him in a crate in the garage during the day so no one can get bit, well it's not very appealing. What all this means is that we're gonna look for land, carry a second mortgage while we build a house the way we want it (Including a larger garage that I couldn't find in my search) and then move in as we put ours on the market. This'll allow us to pay off a few more bills (Vette and Bimmer) and pace our transition into where we eventually call home... It also will allow me the added time to collect more revenue in the company, and be able to give myself a pay raise so we can afford more. Oh well, so much for "Putting it on the market!" Mike

I"m aware of Getrag Making six speed trannies, but I don't believe any of those are in any GM products... BW sold their rights to the product line to Tremec back in the late 90s I thought, but Tremec was involved in the development of the "t5-T56" trans. I have it in one of my shop books somewhere... Mike
