  1. Digging up an old post, but I would like to hear any added input since I am considering a turbo motor for my Z.
  2. Honestly, I am not sure. I just want to go as fast as I can with the stock IRS. If that ends up being low 11's or maybe even high 10's, I'll be happy. I was intending on building a stout short block 383 stroker combo, decent heads, then hitting it with a large two stage nitrous setup. But I do like the idea of just having the power on tap all the time. So a single or twin turbo setup comes to mind. But I didn't want the hassle or cost of an EFI setup either. So, I starting searching and found that you have a proven setup while still using a carb, and no intercooler to boot. So, at this time I am at a toss up. I have already began searching ebay and such for a pair of turbos, but in all honestly I don't have a clue on what size to buy if I am running a twin setup OR what size for a single turbo setup. Or even which would be better in a 280z w/a Chevy 383 stroker. Some people I know have suggested a pair of T-3/T-4 for a twin turbo setup or a T-76 or bigger for a single turbo setup. Any thoughts on this? I already have a decent, stock headed, hyd cam, 383 stroker under the hood now. It doesn't have any problems dealing with the local Camaro's, Corvette's, EVO/STi's, or any other local import. However, the motor is mild and was really only placed in the car in order to get some suspension issues taken care of, plus the car will be receiving a 10 point cage in the near future. So now I am collecting and building the next 383..... Since you have already have taken care of some of the fittment issues, I think I am going to "bite" on some of your ideas. Prime example would be your exhaust manifolds. I am highly interested in seeing pictures of the rest of the exhaust piping and the routing. What size are your turbo's? Any suggestions you have as to turbo size, etc, or any other topic, please mention it. I am wide open to your ideas and thoughts. Thank you for your time.
  3. That's my total goal, a 9 second street car.
  4. Just another request to see those pics..... Thanks!!!
  5. Dead links for the picture, would you mind fixing them? I'd really like to see them. Thanks!!
  6. You are correct. I want the 15's because its prefered for drag racing. For now, I think I am just going to stick to 235/60/15's, but down the road, who knows.
  7. You are right, I am more concerned about going straight vs turning.
  8. I see your point. I am willing to get whatever width rims is necessary, as long as I don't have to use fender flares.
  9. BFG says that the rim needs to be between 7.5" and 11" wide for the 275/50/15 tires. I am not willing to run fender flares. I figured this would work since there are those saying they are using 26x10.5x15 slicks on a 15x8 rim.
  10. Hey guys, as some of you know I have completed my 383/TH350 swap and found that my 195/60/14 will be dead soon (duh!). I think I am going to attempt to stuff 275/50/15's under rear of my 280z. I have searched the forums and haven't found anyone that has run this size tire in a stock wheel opening. I found a company (http://www.wheelvintiques.com) that will custom make me a steel rim in any size and backspacing I want. The question is, what do I need? I have stock, non-flared wheel openings. Although I am rolling the edge of the inter fenders this week and have the coilover conversion stuff on order. The lower spring perch will be above the tires, so I'll gain max tire clearence. Do you think a 15x8 w/5.0 of BS will work with this large tire? If not, what would? Thanks guys!!
  11. Digging up an old thread, but I wondered if anyone had sucessfully stuffed a 275/50/15 tire under a stock wheel opening (no flares or outside body mods). I am getting ready to order my coilover's and will get the 8" springs for the rear, the fender lip will be rolled, and I am having custom steel wheels made (Nissan 4 lug, 15x8, 5" BS). I would like to run 275/50/15 rear tires and just wanted to see if anyone had done it in the last two years. Thanks guys!!!
  12. Dateline: 9/24/04 around midnight Place: Old Cropduster Air Strip owned by a buddy Victim: Black STi, Black EVO, and Yellow EVO Reason: Just for kicks, no money but alot of respect earned for both parties Result: 3-0 I actually started the night by racing a Z28 Camaro (early '90's). Honestly I figured this guy didn't have a chance in hell, but I needed to break the ice with the crowd because there were some that were actually pointing and laughing at my poor, primered, 280z when I got out there. After the horrible kill on the Camaro, no one was laughing anymore. Most looked really confused, especially since the last time it was out there (before the new motor/trans) it got beat by just about everyone (intentionally raced, knowing it would lose). After the Camaro race, the owner of the STi asked to me run, I accepted thinking I'm gonna get killed. But what the hell right? Like all AWD's he launched on me pretty hard, but I caught him quickly and didn't stop as I flew by. The next race happened as soon as I got back to the starting line. There were other people were already lined up to race, but were cool enough to let me and the black EVO run first (I think alot of people were hoping for me to lose at this point). Again, I thought I was going to get beat. We launched and the EVO (big suprise) flat out kills me out of the hole. Then to make matters worse my Z gets out of shape on the 1-2 shift. I was in his blind spot at that point. I backed out of the gas, dropped into neutral and rode it out (no braking). Once I thought she was stable again and the EVO was far enough ahead to not get hit by me, I dropped her back into 3rd and dropped the hammer and sailed on by him. I still got him by at least 1 or 2 car lengths in the end. Then the owner of the yellow EVO wanted a piece. He had some bolt-ons, not sure how extreme. He did mention something about 16 psi at full boost. Again, I don't know if that's stock or what. I waited awhile before running because I wanted to let my motor cool a bit. Then we finally lined up. Everyone was acting like it was a prize fight or something. Just like the black EVO he stomped me out of the hole, but this time I was way out of shape from the word go. I thought he was going to win because I couldn't get all the way into it without spinning. I finally thought, screw it. So I short shifted into 3rd and hammered it. Despite being completely out of my RPM range I pulled him in and barely got by him in the end. I think his front bumper was at my rear tires. It was close, but he was hyped anyway and a great sport about it. The whole AWD group was cool as hell. I know once I get my 235/60/15 tires and wheels to replace the 195/60/14's on it now I'll have much better traction to play with.
  13. It does, your the first to notice (or say anything). However I was tired of looking at the stock 2.8 in the car and I already had the parts to throw together the 383. So, for now SBC, later....who knows. I am getting pretty lazy, maybe I'll stay SBC.
  14. Yeah I thought so too, but I'll have to pull the motor/trans out to change it. The tube is pinned between the trans housing and the tranny tunnel. So, I can't move it up to change the o-ring/boot.
  15. That's right, yesterday morning my 383 V8Z came to life with the crackle of open headers. Cam break-in went smooth, although I had to adjust a few valves. Shortly after I drove it 2 miles (open headers) to the exhaust shop and had a custom 2 into 1 system made using a Flowmaster Y-Pipe and a stainless muffler (pics soon). I thought the import-type stainless muffler would produce a "buzz" to mask alittle of the V8 sound, but alas it doesn't. Although it does sound amazingly good, but still alittle loud for my taste. I might add two Dynomax Bullet mufflers before the Y-pipe on each headpipe if it attracts the wrong type of attention (cops). Like any new swap, I have to work out a few minor issues. First I have a front seal oil leak, but luckily I can remove the oil pan and change the gasket without removing the motor. I also have a leak coming from the tranny dipstick (on the tranny housing). I am alittle worried the tranny case may have a hairline crack around the dipstick opening. If so, I might take the "easy" way out and just JB Weld it for the time being. I will say this, it has TONS of torque that starts at a low RPM. I have two black skid marks on my driveway to prove it (accident when pulling it out of the garage). Last tonight I went behind our local Wal-Mart and did a mild burnout. With just alittle over half throttle from a stop in first gear I put the hurt on the little 195/60/14's tires in the rear (23" tall). I need a taller/wider tires. I think I am going to start with 235/60/15's in the rear (26" tall). They'll add alittle more ride height and grip better. Who know what I'll go to after I convert the rear's to coilover.
  16. Its a done deal. The stock '75 R-200 flange has been modified and looks great and fits awesome. I need to get some 5/16" fine thread nuts and bolts and I'll be set. I was able to get one more day off (today) so I can get this thing fired up.
  17. Hey Mike. I am sure you a trying to help (thanks!!), but I am not sure what you are trying to tell me. I already have the whole JTR conversion kit, including the u-joint (neapco??) adapter. It doesn't fit my '75 280z's R-200 flange because my flange measures 2.00", despite the claim from JTR: "ALL 1970-1978 Z Cars came with the 2.25" pilot diameter." I know it came this way from the factory because I have known the car its whole life. So, I think I am going to have my flange cut/modified like Guy did to his so that it will work with the supplied part.
  18. I have a '75 too and I just discovered this on my own 15 minutes ago when I went to install my new custom made driveshaft. I never checked because of what the JTR manual says. I REALLY wish the JTR didn't list that "ALL '70-'78 Z's use the 2.25" flange". It should of definely been mentioned if you ask me. I just completed the V8 swap (except the driveshaft) tonight. Tomorrow I was going to fire my new motor and have made an apointment with the best exhaust shop in town. Here's the best part: There are ZERO '76-'78 manual 280z cars for at least 90 miles (I've checked for a donor R-200 is why I know). I am pretty pissed off right now. I had two days to finish the swap before leaving for a 14 day work shift out of town and now it doesn't look like its going to happen. Sorry for the rant.
