I had a sense it was just because the car is old, no surprise there. Just out of curiosity do YOU make the standalone or is some name brand (HKS, Greddy, APEXi, AEM) to name a few? Just someything I should consider in the future. Thanks for all the input guys/girls if there are any (girls that is).

So the problem is entirely electrically based, mechanicals have nothing to do with the problem?

My engine occasionally will spit and sputter while under throttle. It is almost as if the rpms are being severely cut off. One thing that I did discover was that there was some moisture on the ECU connectors. So I dried them off plugged everything back in, and if ran just find no sputting under throttle. Then two days of no problems followed. Then just yesterday when I was about to leave work it did it again. So I removed the connectors, no moisture this time, plugged them in and it ran fine once again. My dad is a Master Technician at Planet Nissan here in Las Vegas, he told me that he had seen many 280zx turbos come in with this problem and the techs would simply just unplug and reinsert the connectors and the problem would disappear. He was wondering if there is a permanent fix for this problem, and also why exactly it is doing this, what is the problem. Could the be getting overly warm sitting in the Vegas Sun in 100+ degree weather? Also the days that these results oocured they only occurred after the car had sat in the sun for several hours, there was no sputtering on the drive to work early in the morning. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Note in the past I have had problems with water getting in the the throttle position switch, but in the cases lately the throttle position switch was dry.

Although I do not have a 240Z I do have a 280zx turbo. I am running three inch staight through, high flow cat, and an APEXi N-1 turbo muffler. The sound is just enough to intimidate people but not too aggresive. I has a very nice deep tone at cruising speeds that is just beautiful. As far as performance goes, on turbocharged car the freer flowing the exhuast is the better. Look at JGTC cars, most of those are turbocharged and guess what exhuast consists of headers and pipes out the back typically in the 3-4" inch range. Running a smaller diameter pipe is somewhat restrictive and thus will resonate more in the pipe/ muffler thus making it loude not to mention losing hp. The "larger the better" pipe idea is only for turbo/supercharged cars, N/A cars typically ,for performance, run 2.5" since this offers the best results in HP increases. A very, very important thing to remember when looking at mufflers, if you are really looking for hp increases but dont what a menacing exhuast note look into straight through design mufflers nad hi-flow cats, baffler type mufflers are a BIG WASTE of MONEY, they are the most restrictive pieces of crap that exist, sorry guys who own these, but it is very true. As for muffler position, like the other guys mentioned too close and you will cook the mufflers packing if not burn holes through baffles. Putting a muffler in the middle can be benificial in one sense, you may get a nicer sound. The guy who built my mandrel bent exhuast told me that on corvettes when installing mufflers they would sound like crap with the mufflers in the back, but once they were relocated underneath the cars cabin, the exhust note was much nicer, esentially he had changed the resonating characteristics of the car to adjust the tone. I hope this helps. Remember no baffle, just eliminate the option immediately, just because a muffler is straight does not make it ricey. Shoot my last Z sounded life a freakin race car, as in NASCAR race car, that car was an N/A 280zx with 3" crushed bent exhuast with an APEXi turbo muffler, and no catylic converter ( it was a 79, not neccessary to have a cat), I gained some power but a 2.5" inch exhuast would have been more beneficial.

Does anyone on this site have them. If so are they true to there word, is the quality impeccable. I am hunting for a complete coilover setup for my 1982 280zx Turbo. Any help would be appreciated. Slownrusty, I know we have been discussing this, but I thought it might return more feedback if shown more blatantly.

Coilovers for the 280ZX?
Drftn280zxt replied to tyson's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
SlowNrusty, can you post pics of the job Techno Toy Tuning did for you on your suspension. (pics of suspension) I can across this link on there site http://www.technotoytuning.com/t3_site_pages/products/index.html the only thing that I am wondering is are those prices for both sides, and fo they need cores? Otherwise this could be a real winner, not to mention extremely affordable assuming those pirces are for both sides, that is complete coilovers for $1325, a steal by all means, plus that fact that they offer any spring rate is outstanding. -
I have a 280zx that drift in quite often, I'm still looking for ways to stiffen suspension. I've considered eibachs, but I would much rather just have all out coilovers. Of course other options are sway bars, urethane bushings, strut tower bars, and for drifting, Good Brakes. Sorry I am not much help, I am kind of limited in my tuning abilities. Until I can get an LSD and better suspension, I am going to focus on getting some more power out my L28ET. Of course my drifting is still limited to the streets, (vacant no traffic streets), gotta finish school first, then do up the car.

Coilovers for the 280ZX?
Drftn280zxt replied to tyson's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
Does Ross make front coilovers for the ZX or not? Does he only make them for those who ask for them? What is the spring rate of those hypercoil springs out of curiosity. Also what type of strut is the 12 way adjustable? -
Suspension for an 82 280zxt
Drftn280zxt replied to Drftn280zxt's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
Why not. Sounds like a legimate solution to me. Tunable dampening, tunable spring rate, tunable ride height, what more could an auto enthusiast (better yet drifter) as for? -
Suspension for an 82 280zxt
Drftn280zxt replied to Drftn280zxt's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
Thanks guys for the feedback. The roads here in Las Vegas are relatively smooth. To be quite honest I like the jarring ride, makes me feel more in tune for the road, explains why when I was really young I was interested in duallies (more road feel). Does anyone here have Modern Motorsports rear coilover system! How is it? Why don't they make a coilover system for the fronts?(it would only make sense to make a complete kit, not just the rears) I assume they made it just to accomodate for all the accel squat people. Am I right? The accel sag is quite annoying, and I really do like my car. Of course I am a young gun so the jarring ride is kind of fun, like a go cart. I like the ride of D1 cars, very stiff, (I rode in Tony Schulz's S14 (Team Toyo) when he came to a drifting event here in Vegas a while back) if that means anything) and I loved the way that handled regardless of the jarring ride! -
I recently picked up a 280zx turbo. It already has aftermarket tokico struts and some kind of aftermarket springs. I can tell that they lessen the amount of accel squat but only minimally. Does anyone know where I can find some really stiff springs. It must still be somewhat streetable. I occassionally drift this car and the body roll sucks still. I really want to lock this car down. If anyone knows anything I can do to stiffen up in regards to springs drop me a line. Note: In the summer I will probably purchase some strut tower bars which will eliminate some of the body roll. The more I can eliminate the better. Sway bars are much further down the road. In a nut shell i need spirngs that will almost eliminate if not eliminate accel squat and also resist body roll. Something similar to 350z stiffness would be ideal if that helps! Thanks

I love the way that wide body flows into the door. Odds are pretty good that that is a custom job. I like that wing, looks good. Sorry I'm no help but thanks for posting that pic!

Custom wheel question
Drftn280zxt replied to Drftn280zxt's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
Dudeboy those are nice but not exactly what I looking for. Although I do like that deep dish look, flat lip, and rolled flange. Chrome is not exactly my thing I find that high polished aluminum looks a bit nicer. Definitely kind of bling. Some else on here might like though, may be another car, those lagunas are nice and how they'd look on a sport truck, oh yeah! Thanks for hunting around trying to find close matches. That wheel maker, as far as size goes, is the widest I've came by with the flat lip though with the 17" diameter. -
Custom wheel question
Drftn280zxt replied to Drftn280zxt's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
Thanks for the input but, those are not the type of wheels I'm really looking for. I want a more modern look. -
I know i've posted this before but I thought i'd try again. Has anyone ever come by wheels of size 17x12 with -2 inches (-50.8mm) of offset (4.5" of lip) and 17x10 with -1.5 inches (-38.1mm) of offset (2.5" of lip). With a rounded polished lip, and seven spoke design similar to that of the G35 coupe? If you can match that description that would be awesome! Konig nexts's are nice but they don't appear to go real wide and they don't have a rounded lip. Another nice design I've seen is the Enkei RS+m only there is no rolled lip and middle doesn't have the nice concavity like the G35 coupe, but the thickness of the pokes is what I like. Give those some nice curvature and a rolled lip as well as a concave middle and it would be a winner. Oh yeah to add the long list of picky numbers and style, forged aluminum 1 piece would be spectacular, and the lip must be flat none of that angled lip. I know I'm picky but I know this would look perfect If I cold just find it. Any info would be appreciated, thanks.

keep up the good work man. Green or blue would be good. Although i'm more in favor for blue on my design. Plus do you really want to lose that nice graphic on your car. My one piece of input can you lower your car any more because it looks like is still is sitting kind of tall of the ground. Your design not mine though. I like low streetable cars.
-
My theme (when my car achieves its future) is modernized drifting supercar style. Lots of power, low ride height, stiff suspesion, and a whole lot of power. Plus a whole much of other modern undates like a custom widebody kit. In a nut shell mean-modern-and oolahlah pretty look good and kick butt while doing it.

Drftn280zxt replied to Drftn280zxt's topic in Body Kits & Paint
I think your paint scheme would be interesting. The new idea I'm conjuring up involves one having the new wide body (in the future) body panels made of carbon fiber. Then paint the car Daytona blue, but in the procces of painting mask out a graphic, on the carbon fiber, that gives the impression of paint peeling off due to speed , while giving the car an advanced, innovative, look. What do you think? I'll have to do a drawing once school gets out after Dec 15, I'm kind of loaded with school work at the time so drawing is not of great priority, although I wish it was. Also your welcome for the comment . -
wow that G-nose actually looks good only I bet it doesn't do much in the case of ground effects. Does it just match stock height?

Drftn280zxt replied to Drftn280zxt's topic in Body Kits & Paint
keep the nice work, and definitely keep the pics coming. As for a wheel design well i'm still hunting through manufacturers, I come to the conclusion that 17-18's would do with a spoke design simialr to what is seen on the G35 Coupe only with a sweet polished lip though . Add big lips at that 4.5" in back and 2.5 up front . I'm beginning to think that japan might be the source . Language barrier though . Yet looking at drifting cars pro and non-pro the wheels made in Japan on the Japanese market are awesome . So that's where I think I'll search. The U.S. has didly quate for custom unless old school muscle/classic is your style, no modern custom equip here . Keep the 2+2 alive, you motivate me to keep my dream alive! -
i'm seeing miata, nice work though, pretty flawless. I need to learn how to photochop to get a more realistic idea of my Z concept.

Is that real carbon fiber on your speaker box? You could really use a new set wheels with your setup. I think of it this way there are three types of Z's, refurbished Z's, just another car Z's, and Modernized Z's . I think your going modern like me, your not alone, especially with the 2+2's wait and see we'll bring popularity to the 2+2 eventually. Keep up the nice work. -
thanks for the replies guys.
