Ford SB into 240/260/280 or into 280ZX swap FAQ?
Rival5 replied to pparaska's topic in Ford V8Z Tech Board
I also have a foxbody oil pan with the small sump upfront. I wasn't planning on using the front plug, but I believe it is removable in its current location. I thought about cutting the crossmember like rudypoochris but I found it easier to cut and re-weld the way I did it, though rudypoochris's way removes all error of re-welding the motor mounts the wrong distance apart. rudypoochris, how much did you exactly ask to have the mounts lowered? Your motor appears at least two inches or so lower then mine. Also were does the bottom of the Ford crossmember sit compared to the Datsun steering/crossmember? The bottom of my Ford crossmember is about flush with the bottom of the Datsun steering/crossmemer. -

rudypoochris I see having Mike lower the mount an inch allowed you to get the harmonic balancer just above the cross member. I'm using Al's mount and I also had to modify the the center to get the oil pan to clear. I thought about having Al's mount made lower but I didn't, with the motor all the way back I have the front of the oil pan a little behind the steering and just above the cross member. In this position the hood just barley doesn't clear so I'm in the middle of modifying my hood. A link to my Gallery http://206.169.90.30/mike/view_album.php?set_albumName=Z-Project -
I had a herniation in the lumbar of my back(lower back). I was carrying a printer and felt a pop and had some pain. The pain went away after two days. Two months later I started to have pain in my left leg. I thought I had a pulled muscle. As time went on the pain became worse from my left butt check down to my calf and numbness in my toes. I was literally laid up on my back for 8 months. Eventually I got an MRI and found I had two herniations one the size of a quarter. I did cortizone shots but it didnt help. I eventually had surgery. Almost a year later now I'm almost back to my pre injury self. I still get slight pains once and a while(little pins and needles) and am very cautious of my back but things are much better. I'm 23, was perfectly healthy, and I'll have to be careful for the rest of my life with my back.

Like the others i'd recommend Alsil's crossmember. If youre going EFI I'd ask him to lower the mounts about an inch and a half to two inches. Modifying it for the pan is really easy, much easier then modifying the hood like I'm trying to do. Good luck and search and lurk around theres tons of great info here.

Sorry for taking so long to get back. I need about 1 inch for my hood to close. If you were to have alsil's mount made one and a half inch to two inches lower then the hood should close, but then there might me clearance problems with the oil pan.

I'm using Alsil's cross member, on a '88 302 out of a mustang hatch. I'm still in the middle of my swap but I have had to modify it to clear my oil pan and the intake, specifically the egr valve, is at least an inch, inch and a half too high so my hood cant close. It may be more it may be less, but thats what I remember off the top of my head. My engine and intake is completely stock, I believe the GT-40 is 3/4 of an inch shorter? so it MAY be close to fitting without modification. I'll try to get out and see exactly how much is needed for my hood to close.

In Va you have to do safety inspections and smog. Dont know if there are exemptions for age, I do know that the smog and inspections go atleast as far back as 86 and most likey farther.

I would grind the inside corner to get since its harder to get in there. I would also leave a gap between the two pieces for the best penetration.

Just because your muscles are strong enough to lift it...

I KNOW YOUR PAIN! I herniated a disk in the same spot. I was carrying a printer only 40-50 lbs and i felt a pop then a pain in my lower back. Two days later i was back on my feet with no pain. Three months later i started to have leg pains, which increased to numbness in my toes, weakness in my leg and extreme pain from my butt to my toes. I went eight months laying on my back with doctors not being able to tell me what was wrong. I went through 3 cortisone shots which did nothing. Finally a doc ordered an MRI and found my ruptured disk. Its now been a year since I've had surgery (exactly what your gonna have) and life is so much better. I'm 95% better and getting better everyday. I was 20 when i hurt my back, never thought it could happen to me. It scared the crap out of me that I could lose to use of my leg or that I would have horrendous pain for the rest of my life. But all went well for me and as im sure the doc has told you the success rate for the surgery is high. Well good Luck. And be nice to your back. Mike -
Dont know how i missed this but id go MAF more flexability for the future

I'll take two. Thanks for all the hard work!

Hello s3079893. I'm just about in the same spot as you. I just recieved my '88 302 HO back from the machinist last week, and have started painting and putting it back together. I too am shooting for around 350 HP when everything is said and done, i plan to use the stock T-5 also. I've also heard that the T-5 should handle around 400 Hp. Here's my gallery of what I've done so far. http://206.169.90.30/mike/view_album.php?set_albumName=Z-Project Good luck with the project. Mike

All depends on where the rust is and how bad, also would you do the repair work yourself or take it to a shop if there is rust. Rust repair takes a lot of time and or a lot of money. If you're looking for a car and don't want to do a lot of work then anything more than surface rust I'd pass on it. If theres substantial rust and you don't mind doing work and or paying more for the repair talk him down. In the end it's worth only as much as you're willing to pay.

$6k AUD (~$4500 US) isn't to bad for a clean Z. Of course as mentioned look at it in person and check all the trouble spots and see how much rust it actually has. Ask the owner if you can use a screw driver or something similar to poke around to look for rust, ie. floor boards, frame rails, batter tray.

The quote from Grumpy is right. Neo magnets have their full strength up to about 80C and loose their magnetic field from 310F-370F depending on the type of alloys in the neo magnet, but if the temperature doesn't hit or exceed the curie temperature (310-370F) neo magnets will regain almost all of their strength when they cool down. If you're really worried about the temperature find some Samarium Cobalt or Alnico magnets. Alnico's curie temperature is about 1000F (the temp were the magnet looses its magnetic field permenately) and the Samarium Cobalt's curie temperature is 482F-662F depending on its alloys. Alnicos are not too exspensive, a lot of car speakers use Alnico magnets, Samarium Cobalt is more expensive if you can find it, but is also used in car speakers.

A year ago I lived in Clifton, Va. near Manassas. Its a min 45 commute to the DC area, about 27-30 miles from where I lived. Can easily be a hour and a half to two hours if you get stuck in Rush hour. I averaged a little over an hour to go 20 miles at 5 am, longer if i waited till 6am. Like others have said housing is exspensive as hell even in Manassas. 1200sqrft fixer upper for 350+K in the Fairfax area. For decent prices id look father out like Wellington or Gainesville for a house. 5 years ago when I moved there I lived in a hotel for 4 months because the housing market was starting to pick up and there were NO houses on the market. A house would be listed for only a couple hours and be sold for up to 50K above the asking price. The price of living is also higher. Of course you may not be looking for a house. Apartments ares exspensive too. My friend in Fairfax is paying $1300/month for a 1 bedroom right now. I also found the people to be a little stuck up with two much money for my taste. There are a lot of things to do and places to go in the Metro area. It is a nice area to live just not my style. No girl could get me to live there again, thats why I brought my last girlfriend from Fairfax to here (Tucson) Good Luck!

My 280ZX was originally my grandmother's (original owner) she named him Killer after her favorite dog that had just died when she bought him, so i kept the name when I got the car. I know how you feel about him being a boy but you get used to it for the most part though people still give me weird looks when I tell them he's a boy.
