Also I believe the Nissan V8's were also in a JDM car called a Cima. Not sure if it is the VH45 or VH41 maybe someone else can confirm. Edit - just found this site might help with what engine came in what car. http://www.freshalloy.com/site/features/tech/engines/home.shtml Cheers Mike

In the late 60's early 70's Nissan/Datsun purchased a rotary license from NSU for the Wankel Engine and installed a prototype 2 rotor into a Datsun 1200 (this is a common engine swap for the 1200 today as drag cars - however there are more and more SR20DET getting installed in the 1200's now) There were a lot of car manufactures looking at the rotary in the 70's, Merc, Nissan, Mazda, NSU (dropped when purchased by Audi), GM the list goes on. But the fuel crisis of the 70's almost killed the rotary off it was only due to Mazda's efforts/perseverance that we still have them on the roads today. So if the fuel crisis did not happen it could be conceivable that a Z might have had a rotary engine as an option? Mazda has, over the years, killed all reasons to hate the rotary (IMO), reliability, fuel economy by competing in endurance races around the world. I guess this is another reason why rotaries are banned from most races and if they are allowed to run, some class rules stop the use of the peripheral port. I guess there will always be the love 'm' hate 'm' with the rotary. Re an 8 rota - WOW technically this would be very difficult to do as a rotary does not have split bearing like a piston engine. This makes assembly tricky and hence the reason for 3 and 4 rota to have a 2 or 3 piece eccentric shaft. Cheers Mike

ha ha - good find

Latest rumor is that mazda will be putting a turbo on the Renesis Engine on the new 2 seater Rx7.....but given the JDM limit of 206kw I can only guess this will be the total power - other markets might get more kw.

I have some of those Superbright Truck LED units I am planning to install in my Z. I have a few images of ideas for the layout What do you think? I will be making a complete custom tail light area for the install of these units. Given that they are so bright I think I could even have a smoke lense cover and still be road legal. Cheers Mike

There are a number of larger rotaries around - GM in the 60's even made a Wankel prototype Corvette with a 4 rotor = at least 2000cc in wankel size. There is the 20b from the Mazda Cosmo = 2000cc + twin turbo. Then there is the R26b (race only) 2616cc n/a Le Manns winning engine with 515kw and 609n/m. If you go by the FIA rules then a Wankel is 1.8xcc = normal engine size. So a 2616cc rotary = 2616x1.8 = 4709cc or almost he same as 302 ford. Now they say a 2 rotor wankel is equivalent of a 6 cylinder so a 4 rotor would be that of a 12 cylinder. And the sound of a 4 rotor is like an F1 car. I am looking into the cost of building a custom 4 rotor out of 2 x 13b = 26b using a custom Eccentric shaft (drive shaft), bolts, oil pump etc You can buy a 4 rotor kit here in NZ. I was thinking of the renesis engine but then I started talking to the rotary shop here and we talked about the 20b then I asked about their 4 rotor = hence the collecting of info for the budget. Here in NZ there have been a few renesis engines imported from Japan (from damaged Rx8) they go for about 2500USD including computer. Cheers Mike

Do the diff it is a LSD - I would also consider the CV half-shafts, brakes (do a search in the brakes setction for Z31 and Toyota caliper), if you do the cv half-shafts you will need to modify the companion flange, and if you do swap the front hubs (this can be done - lots of member of this site have this mod) you will need to change the rear stub axles to 5x4.5 also. Lots of info on these topic already so have a good look around in the old posts. Also if you visit the vendors forum (non-tech) you will see what vendors offer to help with these mods - ie companion flanges for CV conversion etc Mike

How can we stop HybridZ from turning into another Zcar.com ?
NZeder replied to Forrest's topic in Site Support
As a relative newbie I love this site - there is lots of excellent knowledge amongst the members and as a result this is the only Z forum site I visit. Since the upgrade the search function is 100% better. If discussion like this result in improvements (ie the latest upgrade to improve the seacrh etc) then a big thank you to the admins, moderators and members -
Patience of a saint...I might have lost my bottle and told him where to go...however your method did the trick

Excellent pics. I am pleased to see the project is coming along nicely. Also I am very happy to hear about the gearbox cross member. Re my 4 Rotor project - my motorcycle sold on the weekend. So I am now starting the budgeting for the 4 rotor build. I will let you know once I have a better idea myself. Keep up the excellent work and updates. Cheers Mike

Looking to purchase a RB26 powered 240z to race in NZ
NZeder replied to S15 200sx owner's topic in 6 Cylinder Z Forums
Yes very special We even get the RB30 standard in an Australian build car called a Holden Commodore of the late 80s. These engines were the same units used in the R30 skylines that were fitted with 3000cc for this market also. You might notice the talk about putting a RB25 head on these RB30. The reason is the RB30 is not a DOHC just a cross flow OHC. Forgot to say the Holden Commodore also had a turbo option = turbo 3000cc in-line 6. There is a number of these engines fitted to cars in OZ and NZ. And now NZ does not assemble cars any more (like 10 year now) we also get JDM imports with no duty = lots of options for hybridz. -
Looking to purchase a RB26 powered 240z to race in NZ
NZeder replied to S15 200sx owner's topic in 6 Cylinder Z Forums
I must clear something up for the LHD world. Yes the 260z did come with R200 and was made until 1978 for the RHD world. We did not get a 280z. The first time we got the L28 was in the 79 280ZX or the 280c (laurel of the late 70's). As a result we did not get the s30 with EFI = none of the HP sapping anti smog crap = no need for the 280z = 260z did come with R200 for the RHD would. Early 260z did not come with R200 but the later model did - assume this was the same time the Nissan factory change from 260z to 280z for the LHD production run/spec change (sometime in 75). Another good point of the RHD models it is very very hard to find a 4 spd (5 spd was standard for the 240z and 260z manual, the fairlady/200z/s31 had the 4 spd standard until 75ish )= all 240z I have seen/owned have been 5spd from the factory including #00016 I once owned. Hope this explains some of the other differences I listed in the post above and between the RHD and LHD, early 260z, late 260z (reads 280z for the markets that got the 280z) Cheers Mike -

S15 Owner, - long answer There are number of options for diff, brakes etc some will bolt in some will not depends on what bits and how to go about it. Please search the different section with-in this site - there is truck lots of info on all of these questions. But I will see if I can save you a little time. If you can find a late model 260z 2 seater I think this is a better starting point for the following reasons. 1. Most 260z will have a R200 diff (240z have R180) = should be strong enough for the job (you can easily fit a R200 into a 240z - again do a search on this site) - ensure you get the right R200 there a 2 types long nose (260z) and short nose (Skyline, Silvia's 180sx/200sx) 2. last model 260Z have larger chassis rails and stronger rear strut tower (for the US guys these are the same difference between a 260Z and 280Z I believe) 3. The purest won't get upset (but who cares about them this is your project) 4. 260Z have strong stub axles (240z's have been known to break under extreme HP and abuse) so you will want these. 5. 260z (even 2 seater) usually cost less. 6. 260z have a larger steering rack (someone correct me if I am wrong) as there is a different size mounting kit between the two models If not get a 240Z and a 260z 2+2 for a parts car to get these bits off (or other parts ie guards etc) I did look at a 240z on Friday here in Auckland was 4 sale on T&E for $2500. However this was a mess (my brother is a car restorer and said it was too much work = $$$ for all the rust repair, if looking local at a car Zeds have a few known to rust spot so do your homework and look, look and look you don't want to part with your hard earned $$ on a lemon) I would also recommend upgrading the half-shafts to CV units (I am yet to do this for my Z. I know of an engineer here in Auckland that makes CV adapters for the 260z stub axles from chrome-moly to be used with Z31 of R31 half-shafts, I am looking into the options/prices vs getting these from http://www.modern-motorsports.com as I plan to do this also) Re the brakes a bolt on solution is the toyota 4 ports and Z31 n/a 4 stud vented rotors for the fronts and S13 + Z31 n/a dics on the rear with a few custom adapter for both of these setup - I have this on my Z (still of the road). If you are interested in the $$ for the CV setup once I know shot me a PM with your email and we can talk about options etc - might be worth looking into sharing the shipping cost if we get a few parts from http://www.modern-motorsports.com (or any other NZ member for that matter, just send a PM with email and lets start talking/planning etc) And as Douglas states Z32/R230 will be all custom work. Again do your homework use this research to assist with your budget. If you need someone in Auckland to look at Zeds 4 sale I can visit take pics and email etc Mike -
Chevy hub/rotor and Toyota 4 piston brakes (long)
NZeder replied to jbc3's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
I agree they are the larger Toy Calipers. How about having a machine shop create a spacer to go between the two halfs of the caliper? I have seen this done before - use long bolts to join the two halfs back together and the machined spacer is designed to take an o-ring on both sides to ensure a good seal etc. Pull one of the calipers apart and see if this can be done. -

Guys, I believe there have been a number of RB30 (with the RB20 head) installs done in OZ. I did read on the classiczcars.com site that a guy in Melbourne had his RB30 (with TC head) build he in ALK NZ as these guys were very good at this kind of work - however he never did say who the shop was - see http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11123&highlight=nz Good luck with the install whatever you end up doing. I have also heard of a 240z here in NZ with a VQ45 V8 installed.
