Bad idea - my brother once had a car dipped and it is almost impossible to remove 100% of the chemicals. To that end my brother (panelbeater/car restorer) now has a business here in NZ stripping cars of rust/paint etc using a blasting system. Question is how to they neutralize the chemical? The car my brother had done (must have been 15years ago now - and long gone since) was neutralized with water.....hmm clean steel + water and a little chemical left = rust = what was the point in doing the strip/dip? That is my 2c worth.

Congrads on the roadster. I am newish to this site also and there is lot of information to be found by doing a search. SR in a roadster cool. I have always like the roadster but they are very rare in this part of the world. I think there is only 2 or 3 here in New Zealand. You could go 5 Sp as the last RHD roadster had 5sp(SR311) = nostalgia still in check. Not sure about the SRL311 see http://www.datsun.org/roadster/info/SR_faq.html

I agree, I personally prefer RWD I guess that is why I love old-school cars (guess it also due to my age, 33, when most cool cars were RWD and FWD were only new or very very small and not all that cool). Don't like Bling either. The only mags you can get these days seem to be bling and FWD offset (unless you look hard and have more $$). The fast 4's sence here in NZ is big and there are some very very quick 1/4ml and circuit cars now days and the kits/mods for ricers is hugh. I wish the Z and other old-school had this kind of aftermarket kit here in NZ. You've got to love this site though - there are not many other sites where you can talk about putting a V8, V10, V12, Rotary, V6, Inline 4, modern inline 6, turbo or N/A anything from any make into same kind of car without a flaming.

Anybody done a hybrid on the 1jz/2jz engine? I have heard that you can put the 1jz head onto the 2jz bottom end? I believe this has been done here in NZ on a Toyota Drag car currently runs high 9s but looking to get to the 8s with more driving and tuning.

Gauging interest in Custom Hood................
NZeder replied to Poundz9oh9's topic in Body Kits & Paint
Shipping will the kill the cost for me in NZ so I will look at making my own....if I was state side this might be different - cool hood non the less. lol about the crab shells -
Yes I could do the 20B install. A 3 rota will be around (all $$ in my local currency NZD) $4500-$6000 then a rebuild $7000 (includes all parts new balance as you state Series V n/a rota etc). Now given that 3 rota's are TT then I will need a custom intake manifold + EFI bits and computer etc. The difference between a 3 rota and the 4 rota kit is about $3000 then there will the difference in the rebuild. So the difference will be in the order of $10,000 but the result will be a unique Z or even Rota for that matter. And building this over 12-18months will help with the $$ differences. Yes I could go and fit a 3 rota in a month of so...but in 12mths I will have a very special car. Still $10,000 is a lot of money in any currency. So once the bike sells I will be looking into the cost of the 3 rota vs 4 rota in a lot more detail......

Yep heard the 100k thing before also, and like Aux states usually turbo and high output (revs) NA's. I will be building the 4 rota for reliability not out and out performance. If I did the performance thing I would be getting close to 650hp from the NA 4 rota. Going for more standard street porting = results in longer life and around the 350-400hp area (only time will tell once I start the build and get it on the dyno etc). This HP can delivered by 13B TT with lots of work but life will be short if revs are high (9000 rpm) this type of engine might need to be striped and looked at every 3000k (assumes a race engine under race conditions)

Marcus, love the hood - I guess I did not look for long enough in the gallary...newbee....my bro is my panelbeater and he likes to work with metal so like my flares, boot lid spoiler and soon to be complete front airdam the hood will be steel. I know this will add extra weight but this is not a racecar and weight is not a concern. Marcus your hood shows me what it might look like

Guys, I am thinking of putting a hood scoop on to my 260Z. Here is pic of a scoop from a Toyota Starlet GT Turbo. I am no good with photoshop so can't put this onto a Z (if someone can that would be very very cool). I am thinking of having this in the front just where the standard hood begins to rise. Your thoughts? Or any other pic of hood scoops on S30 bodied cars?

huston we have a go....well came home from work yesterday...family have changed their minds..if they do this again I will go postal on them.. kidding So as soon as the bike sells it will start the engine build
-
Guys, Thank you for your comments etc. Owen yes Haltech is what the engine builder recommends for this type of build. From what I have read/be told Rotaries can be very reliable if built correctly and maintained correct, the same can be said about any engine, I know of 3.1 L28 that only lasted a few laps of a track (holed the piston - well 2 of them) and the motor cost $$ to build. I think I will do this build.... Might take longer than I first thought though - family issue to work though...

For those that are interested in what a 4 rota would sound like here is URL to a video of the Le Manns winning 4 rota http://www.mymazdarotary.com/mazda_rotary_general/787b/787b_videos/787b_videos.htm Also in this thread on this forum there is a link to a video of one of the 4 rota's build here in NZ (in fact the drag strip in the vid is the local strip in Auckland NZ) http://hybridz.org/nuke/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&file=viewtopic&t=31085 see post by 240Zduz10s on second page

Aux thanks for putting me straight on the pushrod thing - I am not an engine expert if fact I know nothing about SBC, VH45 and Wankels or any other engine for that matter. I know how an engine works does that count I have always like the Wankel engine and how it works (never owned a Rotary before, 4 Z and motorbikes and three 4 cylinder cars) Love the shape of the Z too much to look at old school rotaries (RX3 or the RX7 batman Series 6 would be the only ones I like. Lots of RX7 S6 here in NZ now....we get a lot of JDM imports as we don't manufacture/assemble vehicles here any more). Currently we don't have any smog laws either so anything goes (this is changing very soon).
-
Yep don't want a SBC everyone else has done this install....I want to be different....as for the cost a good strong SBC here in NZ will cost almost the same $$ (by strong I mean forged internals, 4 bolt etc). I mean you start with a standard SBC (push rod....how old is that....don't get me wrong SBC are a excellent engine just everyone has one). Now before someone jumps down my throat and informs me that there are OHC SBC I bet they cost $$ here in NZ. So this was why I was thinking VH45 DOHC. These can be picked up here in NZ for $1500-3000 NZD that is $900-1800 USD. You then want to put new internals (just never know what you are getting from a JDM import engine)...etc. Again not a SBC and a V8 cool. So for me it is a toss up between the 4 rota and the VH45. I am thinking 4 rota as these are very very rare...ie never a factory engine only ever a race engine from mazda or custom build. Given they build them here in NZ then cool....I think this it the one for me. Plus my car is a 1977 260z = 2.6l and the 4 rota is 2.6l in mazda sizing. I have been told that it will sound like a F1 car when on song....how cool is that.... As you might have guessed I think I will be doing this install - just a question of how long it is going to take to save the $$ - will buy bits as $$ are saved so I would say a 12-18month project. I guess time and $$ will tell. I will work on getting the Z back on the road with the standard L26 with all the other body mods done while the engine is getting built - then install complete the engineering work and certification - repaint the engine bay and hopefully in 12-18months my hybridz will be complete - now just need to visit the bike shop to sell my motorbike....... to ZZ4 $10k car I assume USD = $16K NZD an excellent start on the with the 4 rota (might have the base complete at this point)...and finding a good rust free Z in NZ (which is what I have in bits already) is going to cost anything between $10-20k NZD = $6-12K your money
-
Well not quite that simple - yes it looks like this when it is complete but I believe there is more involved. I am looking at doing just that a 4 rota - using custom eccentric shaft, ends and coupler with standard 13b rota's and housings. Hey did you know that corvette has looking at a wankel? see http://www.monito.com/wankel/corvette.html even a 4 rota They say a 2 rota is like a 6 cylinder so a 4 would be like a 12 but much smaller and only 5 moving parts internally, the shaft and the 4 rota's. How many in a V12 at least (assume 4 values per cylinder) 50 at a quick count more like 150.
-
Were in NZ? I am in NZ - I would love to see the install in person....I was thinking about this install but now am thinking 4 rota wankel = 26B custom made here in NZ using 13B and custom parts. Send me a PM and I will see if I can visit the guy with my digital cam and post pic when I am at work - only have dial-up at home. For those that don't know 90% of NZ population can get high speed access - just those of us that live in the country that can't. Also NZ has 4 Million people but has the same size coast line as North America (not all of America's just the bit in the middle). This = lots of ocean roads etc. Also I think 98% of NZ pop live with-in a 32mile drive to the ocean.....

The Carb option was discussed - it would be cheaper than the custom FI system that will need to be made. The issue is that I will still need a comptuer for the timing - 4 rota timing is not a common thing you know. So if I have to spend the $$ on a ECU for the timing then this can be used for the FI. The cost of the FI custom mainfold would be about $1800 NZD (this is just a guess for now) + fuel rails, injectors, butterflies, TPS, MAP, AFM etc. May be Carb to begin with then FI with tidy FI setup. Here a pic of a 20B with custom FI manifold so I guess the 4 rota would be like this = nice and clean - without the turbo...I don't want that much power for now (will add more $$ to build)

Well after 4 or 5 years with the Z of the road I am now thinking about putting her back together. Problem is should I repower it? I still have the standard/original L26 Block-flowed E88 head with new value train semi race cam etc. My panel better (read my bro) wants to put a Infinity VH45 V8 in or a RB25DET or RB26DETT. These will cost $$ in engineering work and getting the car certified so I can drive it on the roads here in NZ. So I visited a Rotary workshop in here Auckland today that rebuilds/builds Mazda Rotaries. They have build a number of custom 4 Rotors race engines over the last few years. One is a N/A RX7 Series VI here in NZ that does low 10sec 1/4 mile, I believe the other engines were build for US, UK and Japan customers (with turbos). We discussed the idea of a 4 rota in my Z. The owner of the workshop has installed a 3 Rota into a 240Z a few years back when living/working Australia but we both agree that a 4 rota would be very very different and due to the rarity of the 3 rota the $$ involved is only a few $1000s more for custom 4 rota. So where is my head at? Well I will have to sell my left nut for the engine this is not going to be cheap But I am now a daddy for the first time so I am thinking I might have to sell one of my toys....Yep I am thinking the Motorbike will have to go (I want to be here to see my young lad grow up, I don't want to give the responsibility of my life to some other nut on the road...I do a good job of that by my self thank you) Anyway if the bike does go down the road I will have some $$ to start the engine - I would say enough to buy the bits for the basic 4 rota - I will then need to save for the labour to put it together, then there will be the custom intake manifold/ECU/EFI bits, oil cooler, gearbox, clutch/flywheel etc. So if I do start this project then I will post pics etc here - however I have only just started thinking I have not run this past the boss (reads my better half). So should I do this? The car will be a street/custom car with the odd visit to the strip and track but not an out and out track car and I am not into hair dryers either so it will be n/a. I estimate the repower will be in the order of $20-30K NZD so don't tell the boss if I do go down this path. I think this engine will output about 500 reliable HP. This project is not a happening thing yet.....thinking....thinking....I will sit on this for a while - also I have dial-up access so I don't visit this site every day. So if I don't reply to any questions etc I will be looking after the new born or working or working on the boss re this project

Anybody else notice how close the accelerator is going to be to the new firewall? That is one hell of a big gearbox. Anybody have any idea on the amount of heat that monster will produce? You might end up hot footed I think this install would go better in a RHD car... I would hate to be going for the brake and catch the accelerator on the way past fastzcars any chance of getting some closer shots of the pedal area

I see the problem - I have view the General Photos by date and if you have your General Photos sort but another method (ie file name or title) then you will see different pix. I will see if I can correct this by editing my post above.

Excellent work getting the pix fastzcars - should be correct now Here are the linked pix Here are the URLs http://hybridz.org/nuke/modules/coppermine/albums/userpics/11204/normal_Im001030.jpg http://hybridz.org/nuke/modules/coppermine/albums/userpics/11204/normal_Im001031.jpg http://hybridz.org/nuke/modules/coppermine/albums/userpics/11204/normal_Im001032.jpg http://hybridz.org/nuke/modules/coppermine/albums/userpics/11204/normal_Im001033.jpg http://hybridz.org/nuke/modules/coppermine/albums/userpics/11204/normal_Im001034.jpg http://hybridz.org/nuke/modules/coppermine/albums/userpics/11204/normal_Im001035.jpg http://hybridz.org/nuke/modules/coppermine/albums/userpics/11204/normal_Im001036.jpg http://hybridz.org/nuke/modules/coppermine/albums/userpics/11204/normal_Im001037.jpg http://hybridz.org/nuke/modules/coppermine/albums/userpics/11204/normal_Im001038.jpg

Hey, Dreams are free.....and if people did not dream ideas would not be born....look some might once have thought a Viper V10 in a Zee was a dream but someone is the USA is putting on into a Zee. So who knows. One day you might just see that W12 or 12l v16 in a Zee (however I think the v16 will be too long it is a very very big motor....there is a UK TV program called TopGear that test drove the v16 prototype monster from Cadillac (airs here in NZ also) all I can say is wow)
-
Gotta get some of those....RHD you say....very cool for those of us that do have RHD and drive on the left side of the road. Now to see if I can get them in NZ.

Here is the scanned pix - as stated "NZ Petrolhead" is printed on newspaper so did not scan too well but you can see the install. http://hybridz.org/nuke/modules.php?op=modload&name=coppermine&file=displayimage&pos=-1867

I have just picked up a copy of a local mag "NZ Petrolhead" and their is a small article about a V10 viper engine going into a 240z in the USA. An expat Kiwi 'Golly' living in the USA has at his work a 1972 Datsun 240z that he is putting a brand new Dodge Viper motor and six-speed trans. The all aluminium V10, 488 cubic inches, 480hp and 500 ft/lb torque weighs in at 509lbs. The car is going to be a street car with full roll cage, power windows, A/C, 20 gallon fuel cell, CD sound system etc. Brake are 14" with siz-pot calipers, custom tubular front and rear A-arms etc. Comments from 'Golly' "I've just started building a new firewall. The motor actually fits into the stock engine bay, but couldn't get it low enough, so moved it back about 5" and down. The motor only weighs 509lbs fully dressed, so it's lighter than the 150hp six-cylinder that came out." I don't have a scanner so I can't get the pix but looks good in the engine bay. I will visit a friend to get the pix scanned but not sure how well they will come out, "NZ Petrolhead" is printed on newsprint.
