  1. Weird - I've never had that happen! Sounds like possible spyware on your computer? Just a thought.
  2. Thanks, Alex - I sure wish I could have been there! Some really cool stuff there!
  3. Tim, that does hurt to look at - my condolences. But it will be fixed in short order! I agree - put a bumper sticker on it, or after it's appraised, do a quick repair yourself (pop out the dents if you can, etc.). But it'll still be one if not THE slickest Z at MSA. And probably THE slickest that's owner conceived, designed and built! If I was going to MSA, I'd rather see it with the damage than not see it there! Best Wishes, Pete
  4. If you're talking BBC Z's - got here: http://www.ratsun.com/ Also, for "different" approach, check out "Michael"'s BBCZ: http://alteredz.com/MichaelOlsBBZ.htm
  5. The outer stub axle bearing is sealed on one side and if installed correctly, that sealed side is outboard - so no separate seal is needed.
  6. I dunno. Gasket seal may suffer, an if you're running pistons with a high ring package, that may not be good either. Help, Grumpyvette!
  7. The valve un-shrouding can help high lift flow. But the SBC is seriously undervalved. If you go wiht a big bore, get the 2.08" valves and be sure to shape the chamber wall so it comes within about .050" of the gasket bore (4.200").
  8. MAN, this is frustrating. I just logged in, read some posts, wrote a BIG long post responding to someone about composite filament winding, and when I hit return, got a login screen. I USUALLY copy all the text of my response to the paste buffer, but forgot to. Of course, I couldn't hit "back" and get the text, it'd been lost. To me, this is the worst problem on the site. It's definitely worse than with the old software. But overall, I like the new site. Thanks Dan!
  9. It can be done. I just typed a huge response that got nixed because my login timed out. Sorry, no time to do that again.
  10. I saw this on the classic z-car mailing list. Bob Walters, who has an original Scarab says "I bought one from this site, delivered on time, works fine." Go to http://www.jadeals.com if interested. I just bought one here.
  11. Incredible, Scottie - 10.08!!! I understand your desire to move on - and hope you stick around here.
  12. The price difference from Cam Motion to go from an all 8620 Billet cam to an 8620 Billet cam with the pressed on cast "everwear" gear was about $50. That's the price of a bronze gear. A Comp Polymer gear is $100! I see no reason to deal with bronze or polymer gears if you're buying a new cam, since like someone mentioned, pressing on a cast gear is done by most cam manufacturers, and the price difference is about what you'd end up paying for adding a bronze dist. gear anyway. John (jt1): I bought the Canfield 215's for my 406. The quoted flow numbers from Canfield (they still don't have them on their web site) were conservative. When tested straight out of the box, they flowed better than quoted. Note that they flowed them on a 4.125" fixture, and the shop that did mine didn't have that size and used a 4.25" fixture. That surely unshrouded the intake valve some. See the before/after flow numbers here: http://alteredz.com/data/canf215flow_1_summary.htm So those quoted numbers for the Canfield 195s may not be so far off what you get out of the box, if you buy them from someone that gets them fully assembled from Canfield (see below). Also, the amount of cleanup we did to the exhaust to bring it in line was MINIMAL, just knocking off a ridge here and there mostly. Note that some places buy castings from Canfield and put parts and the valve job on. Some have bought these heads and had them tested to find that they don't flow well. Competition Products is one place that buys the bare castings. I'd check with Jeg's to make sure their Jeg's heads (that are Canfield heads) are bought assembled from Canfield. I suggest you buy them directly from Canfield (expensie) or through one of the shops that buys only assembled heads from them. Call Canfield and they'll be happy to tell you who to go to that buys them assembled. I bought mine from Dave at Thunder Racing Products: 330-792-2451. Be sure to tell him I sent you! I'm buying most of my engine parts from him now.
  13. BIG EDIT (well, delete, actually) of my post. If what John C said is MSA's true view, I see no need for a Boycott. But I must say THEY could have straightened this out THEMSELVES by being BUSINESSLIKE in the first place. As for showing up at 530am, well, that takes alot of the fun out of it. But I understand that's what you have to do to get the good spots and to be able to "Be together". Well, that's not how I'd run things, but if that's how they want to do it, fine.
  14. One of the things I don't really care for in the JTR design is the hood latch bracket. Some do away with the latch and use hood pins. I moved it over about 6 inches: http://alteredz.com/Enginemount.htm The only mod I made was to bump the tunnel a bit, about 4" back from the firewall on the passenger side. This was to clear the big steel blowproof bellhousing.
  15. Ugh. That's exactly why I'm looking at a billet roller cam with a pressed on cast gear. It cost's $55 more than an all billet one. I wonder what the wear chips from 1 or 2 worn bronze gears does to an engine. Hopefully you guys are running filters that will catch that stuff, and have plugged the filter bypass?
  16. An example of what it takes to build an over-the-top 1000+ hp SB Chevy V8: http://www.montygwilliams.com/ SUPER detail on the entire build and the choices made.
  17. BS You did more than say grumpyvette's posts would view better in the correct forums. You chastised him. It didn't come across as constructive criticism at all. It came across as nasty. If it didn't, you wouldn't have gotten the response from me, Tim, grumpyvette, etc. No, bud, I DID tell you what was on my mind. Quit playing games. It's not going to work, David. It just isn't. I judged your actions in this post. - that's all. And what's wrong with that? I called the actions immature, as they remind me of what kids do in middle school. Sorry, I'm not going to let you deflect my posts to you and try to have the last word. Deal with what you did, accept ALL of it, and apologize if you wish. I really don't care.
  18. grumpyvette, yes you are friends. The amount of help that grumpyvette provides to people here and the offline email and help he provides does, in my opinion, CUT HIM SOME SLACK. It's not as if posting in the wrong forum is a cardinal sin - even though it's part of the forum "rules". To throw the rules in the face of a friend and also implicate the moderators is like biting the hand that feeds you. If David had an issue with it, he could have emailed grumpyvette offline, or posted in a more tactful way. And BTW, grumpyvette isn't the only one that got a bit miffed about David's post. 007fastz - now you want to take sides with David. If you can't understand what was wrong with David's post, AFTER grumpyvette and I pointed out WHY it was in bad form, then you have some learning to do as well. Why do I feel like a freaking babysitter!!!!!
  19. I agree - it's definitely cultural. And I think it's also generational. Art, people that grew up in the US when we did mostly drove american cars. But today's young people grew up with many japanese cars in the household. And American car quality went into the crapper in the 70s and 80s, (and past that), while the Japanese cars grew in quality. So it's obvious that many young people (in the US) will have a bias against American engines. Me, I go for simple, easy, low maintance, easy tuning, robust, not-on-the-edge, large displacement (yes, lower hp/liter even) NA power for the street. It's a conscious decision I made. I might make a different one next time (like a not-so-small turbo GN engine).
  20. I'll never understand why people challenge the moderators of a site publicly in the forums. If it's to set themselves apart as a lightning rod, then may I do understand it, but I don't condone it - the moderators are human and may well act against you if you chose to be an antagonist. David should have nicely brought the subject up with grumpyvette. grumpyvette was the one who posted in the wrong forum (and I think we all have done that). But David chose to imply other things - favoritism from the moderators. Well, if I were one to play favorites, it'd be to mature, informative posters like grumpyvette. The point of my previous post above was simple - you get farther with nice civil discussion than with barbs and jabs. BTW, this thread should be moved - in the next 24hrs it will be moved to the Non-Tech forum.
  21. No, you should have said it totally differently. A little tact would have a good thing. Grumpy - PLEASE DO NOT STOP POSTING STUFF AT HYBRIDZ!!!!! Unfortunately, I live in a neighborhood with covanents. Those buildings are taboo here.
  22. Today, I did something I hardly EVER do - watched TV. Of course, I immediately turned to the SPEED channel, and watched "Victory By Design", with host/driver Alain de Cadenet. I've watched the older shows like this that he did, but these new ones are excellent. I watched the Aston Martin one, and the Ferarri one. Talk about some beautiful looking and sounding cars! I also watched "Making of Victory By Design". That was very apropos to this discussion. The director noted that he worked very hard on getting the soundtrack to have the actual sounds of the cars as Alain drove them - that he didn't want to have to fill in with music, if I recall. And it was well worth it - I cranked the TV volume up and listened to the beautiful sounds of those engines as Alain drove the cars. I know that what we're working on is in no way a directed tv show, but it just pointed out that engine sounds are preferred by many to music, when watching cars being driven. Unless of course, it's a giant bumble-bee fart can exaust soundtrack!!!!
