What year is the L28ET from? I had an '81 and we wound up not being able to use the optical crank angle sensor. This has about 90% of what you need to know about VEMS: http://www.vems.us/v3userguide For about $1k you could be running VEMS or MS on your L28ET, if you're willing to wire it yourself. If you want ultimate flexibility, those are your best bets. I could take my VEMS box out of my car, plug it into my motorcycle and ride to the marina, plug it into my boat, go fishing for the day, then plug it into a halibut and ride that home. That last part was an exaggeration, and I don't own a boat or a motorcycle.

I had my car when I started the project, but I tackled it much the same way. I sold my motor and bought a turbocharger. I found seats on CL. I bought the elbows to build my exhaust manifold, etc. It's a really big treat for me to go connect two of those parts. A good friend of mine gifted me the bellhousing I needed, and even though it'll be another month or so before I can mate it to my motor, it was really cool to get to mate it to my transmission. I highly recommend this method, if you have the space.

Gonna go ahead and say it. I've been fighting it for a couple days, but I'm just going to give in. You're talking about a HUGE undertaking (Avernier's posts don't apply to you, either I'm totally misunderstanding what you mean by "reliable daily driver", or he is. That isn't to say that it didn't make the drive to FLA or that it isn't fast as piss, though). The swap on its own is a big friggin deal, or Hybridz wouldn't have an entire subforum dedicated to it. Avernier's projects sound friggin awesome and he should be proud of them, but the sort of project you're talking about doesn't sound like the kind of project that can feasibly be done in a weekend. I understand that I'm a dumbass and flame flame flame or whatever, but I estimate work for a living, I haven't starved yet, and your project and Avernier's sound like apples and oranges. Next, To put the kind of work you're talking about into a car and not make any changes along the way would be foolish. Accepting my premise of "this is a ton of work, don't take it lightly", at the end of your project, you'll have done a ton of work, and wound up on the other side with a super sweet twin turbo setup. The flipside is that you just spent all that time and money and didn't bother upgrading your forced induction system, the design of which (assuming the motor is an American ride out of a junkyard) at the VERY least 22 years old. A lot has happened in turbocharger technology since then. That's just my $.02 cents. I'd spend a lot more just to take a drive in Avernier's car, btw. This was not a post meant to rip on anyone.

If money WERE an object, I'd go with VEMS. I have done a couple VEMS setups and a couple Megasquirt setups in the past (one of each in cars that are my own) and have been much happier with VEMS in terms of quality and ease of use. IIRC, the price difference between VEMS and MS at this point is negligible if you go for similar features between the two, but the difference is the VEMS base model is more expensive and more fully featured than is MS. They are so similar that BG (the folks who built MS) sued VEMS, and the MS forums automatically filter out the word "VEMS" from any post and replace it with "Another EMS Product" or something. Potential copyright infringement notwithstanding, VEMS is building a higher quality product IMO. At any rate, both MS and VEMS are amazing units to work with once you get them up and running, and depending on how much you want to do with them later, you'll enjoy either of them immensely. Having wired the stuff up yourself, you will have a deeper understanding of how the the system actually works and (if you have any sort of brain in your head) that should make you more comfortable when tuning.

The cheapest route to new OE Toyota parts: 1. Call the Toyota dealership in Vancouver, WA 2. ask to talk to Mark 3. (I don't think I'm allowed to tell you to join another forum per the hbz rules, but I don't have time to check the rules, so I just won't tell you to join) IF you're a member of CelicaSupra.com's forum and you do #1 and #2 above, Mark will give you an amazing discount. I can't tell you what percentage, but it is most definitely worthwhile. I try to have no questions to ask him\waste his time with because there is no way he is making money selling us parts. I try to just have as precise of a description as possible.

additional costs: $130 or so for my ARP head studs $200 or so for my cometic multilayer steel head gasket $200 or so for a full gasket kit (upper and lower) $115 for my q45 throttle body Intake manifold (the 2jz-gte manifolds won't bolt to my ge head) will be fabbed for free by a (very) good friend. $400 or so for braided everything. IIRC, Clifton here on the forum had his boost reference blow off and started a chain of events that blew his motor up. I'll be running AN\braided vacuum lines in a couple spots.

Motor ($180 2jz-ge at junk yard) Trans ($1200 with a 7mgte, sold the motor) Motor mounts (haven't done yet) Trans mounts (haven't done yet) Custom driveshaft (~$200 I think is what i spent) Aftermarket single turbo exhaust manifold ($230 in parts from ace stainless online) Aftermarket Turbo ($800 for my hx50) Exhaust ($400 for the 3" setup I was running behind my 7mgte) Uprated clutch/pressure plate (have not sourced yet) Bigger intercooler (~$200 ebay intercooler) Intercooler piping kit ($120? ebay kit) BOV (haven't sourced yet) Waste gate ($175 Tial 44mm MVR on craigslist) Bigger injectors (haven't sourced yet) Higher volume and pressure fuel pump (~$200?) Fuel tank of some kind (fuel cell, or I think a 76 260z tank? with different fittings) ($200 shipped from a forum member here: I bought a '75 tank with -8 AN fittings on it. Came off a carb'd LS1 project Bigger fuel lines (Came with the tank) Rising rate fuel pressure regulator (haven't purchased yet) Fuel filter (meh, $30?) ECU of some sort, I'm with devil on that, MS will be your best bet price wise, most people who run 2jzs tend to spend a little more for brand name as in the overall price it is fairly negligible ($800 for VEMS, I'm much happier with it than either my original Megasquirt n spark - extra box from years ago or my friend's newer MS box) Gauges (boost, oil pressure, water temperature, speedometer, tachometer) (~$100-300, I will be buying a tablet and running a bluetooth module off of my VEMS box. I am making a custom dash, so I will include a mount for a galaxy note tablet) Electric fan w/shroud (have not sourced yet)

So yeah, after looking at the motor, bad idea. rofl

This is definitely going to be fun. lol Brian, do you see an issue with running a plate to the (2) 9:00 and the 11:30-ish, or a longer one with a cutout for the oil filter that spans the (2) 9:00s, the 4:00, and 4:30?

Cruise control. If you remove it, your Z will just cruise uncontrollably.

BMW is out of the garage, SeattleJester's '71 s30 is now IN the garage. I picked up a mill last month aaaand here are some pics of the 2jz project! https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.385086744961547&type=1&l=575962ae57

We can build you a set of motor mounts and a transmission mount. If you have a later Z you'll have to remove the upper portion of the transmission mount in the tunnel, and you'll have to drill\bolt or weld the transmission mount to its new location. We'll update when we get a little further along in my project.

-
How much are they? SeattleJester and I have talked about making a run of them as we do our projects. With enough interest, we'd probably just go ahead and do it.
-
If someone here can confirm for us that your motor mounts sit at the same spot as mine do, I can build you a pair when I fab mine up. I am running a 2jzge in a '73 240z.

what single turbo manifold are you running?

2jzge hx50 building the header myself. I'll post pics when it's done. -
I'm planning on buying the thickest cometic gasket I can without jumping from $184 to $220 or whatever it is. Unless you're talking about making dookiepower, you don't need to worry about lowering your CR. the 7m and jz series have enough capability for high end abuse that even if you aim to just barely twist your s30 in half, you still have moderate "oops" space with your motor in terms of compression, etc. Also, stop fighting.
-
If you aim to set it up for it, you could hit 25. I wouldn't romp on it at all on that sort of tune, but if you head into the project with the right design (I'm running VEMS, it'll allow on-the-fly tune switching), I don't see why you couldn't hit mid 20s without much issue, and you could probably hit low 30s, depending on how close to the wire you want to play it. The s30 weighs like a thousand pounds less than the mkiii supra, IIRC.

A 14" diameter is not what I thought of when I saw "14" Autocross slicks"
-
Definitely. Not to poo-poo the SR20, but it's a terrible waste of time. lol

http://www.supramania.com/forums/showthread.php?94010-7MGTE-or-1JZGTE-bell-housing Diameters look about right, if someone can shed some light on the length of one vs the other, I think I'll be fine. Looks to me like all I have to worry about is mounting them at the same distance from the firewall.

Short question: does anyone have a picture of R154 bellhousings for a 2jz side by side with a 7m? Long question: I'm swapping the 7mgte in my '73 240z for a 2jz-ge. A buddy of mine will be back home from school in Sweden for a month this summer. He will be helping me fabricate my turbo header. To guarantee we don't build a header with a turbo in an inopportune location, I'd like to have my motor mounted by the time we design and fabricate. After purchasing my turbo (this hx50: http://www.ebay.com/itm/261222767187?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649) I won't have the cash to purchase all flanges, piping, and elbows, AND an ebay bellhousing by the time he arrives. I'm hoping to mount the motor without the 2jz bellhousing. I'm hoping to mount the jz in the same position (front\back) as the 7m is now, and as I have some space between my trans tunnel and my current 7m bellhousing, I'm thinking it won't be an issue. If the 2jz's bellhousing is significantly more broad, or doesn't funnel down as quickly, I may have an issue here, and have to refabricate some of the trans tunnel. Any input?

I'll post some pics up some day. This weekend I sold my 7mgte to Brian (SeattleJester), and purchased a Holset HX50 for my 2JZ-GE mentioned earlier. I'll be fabricating a header, so I'm currently purchasing flanges and elbows and whatnot. I will definitely document this bit. I've got my wiring project about 2\3 finished! I'm hoping to get my buddy's BMW out of my garage in the next month, at which time I'll be pulling the 7mgte out of the car, and using the garage space to work on my 2jz and clean up the 7m alongside SeattleJester.
