  1. No, I think he means that the RB is heaver then the L6, and the additional weight of the RB motor with all the accessories possibly has a detrimental effect on handling--he's asking the question if anyone has really thought about it. The V8 weight is farther back, even if the whole thing was cast iron, and lends itself better in weight distribution then the RB engine does. Our V8's have a lot of aluminum parts, which make them roughly equal to the L6 (or darn close) in weight. You just can't beat that IMO. It would be cool to weigh Stony's car to find out was hist weight distribution is. Davy
  2. This thread just begs the question: "Does a smaller, 'lighter' V8 spool faster (pull faster) under load?" And the royal answer to that when it comes to accelleration from the drag racing point of view. I'm pretty sure I'm correct since the faster drag racing cars usually bigger motors. So I would think that a 350 SBC would better than a 283, and a 406 SBC would be better than a 350, all things being equal. Spank me if I'm way off here, but I don't think so. Davy
  3. Of course you can always boost the V8 to have the best of both worlds! I am working on that very concept, although "working" counts as gathering parts and dreaming for the time being. I have to liberate my engine stand first (get the 350 into the 240Z first) and then do a 400/377 build first. I talked with Mike D the other day and he said that he recently let go a couple of 400 SBC's!! Man, I could have cried right there. Still, it's always good to have friends that are on the lookout for you when you need something With Lone's help, I have become a little bit more turbo saavy, although I'm far from any of the genuine turbo guys in the forum. EFI is actually the hurdle....no, an engine management system is actually the main hurdle. The manfold is actually easy and just requires a mild bit of fabrication. I'd like to use a manifold with nitrous bungs as FI ports... I just realized I heisted this thread sorry, I just get carried away with topics I get excited about! Davy
  4. Also, don't ruin your mustache bar by boogering up the thin metal rings that you see on the edges of the each end of the bar---those stay! Just burn out the rubber and install new poly units. Davy
  5. I personally hate silicone based treatments for rubber, so I'll throw in a pitch for Griot's Garage vinyl & rubber treatment. It works VERY well and I highly recommend it. It is the ONLY thing I will use on dashbards, plastic, vinyl, rubber... Griot's Garage BTW, they have rubber cleaner that works well too. Davy
  6. Word of caution: plan out what you want to accomplish FIRST before starting to just spend money. This project will cost you more then you think it will---for most people it is at least DOUBLE what they thought it would be A crate motor is great if (1) you can afford it (lump sum is big) (2) it will be nearly 100% reliable, especially if it is a GM crate motor. A junk yard motor is not a bad thing, but make sure you can get some kind of warranty or you can hear it run before you pull it. If you go with an EFI motor, make sure you pull EVERYTHING electronic that goes with the engine. You also should pull the gas tank & fuel pumps too. Do plenty of research on the forum to go about accomplishing you task and you should be OK. Davy
  7. It's probably a great platform to do swaps with too. I just know a lot more about Nissans, so I stick with them, but I'm not against doing a V8 RX7 swap either...or a Porsche for that matter... The first gen bodies look fabulous with big flare kits and such; very clean looking. Me like! Davy
  8. Thanks to Jeromio and Tomahawk Z for the info--helps me too since I never bothered to see if I have the correct piece... Davy
  9. Jaime, I have not done this, but I'm taking a stab at recalling an old thread about this very subject: I believe the answer lay in getting the correct pinion flange (???sorry don't know the correct term, but it is the part you bolt up the adapter to) from another R200...bummer. Do a search and see what you come up with. There may well be a solution deep in the archives; I'm nearly positive. At least this bumps the thread up, no? Davy
  10. I've talked to Ross a number of times regarding his spacers/adapters and I have to admit, he is a cool guy who knows his stuff. Modern Motorsports This is a pic from his website. HTH. I have done some business with him already, and I can vouch that he is a good guy to deal with. Davy
  11. Hmm, I just noticed that BLKMGK is now a "HybridZ know-it-all." And I am an "Overlord." Wow. Don't know what to say except I may have to throw Dan a few more dollars this time. Anyone know what SuperDan's Paypal account is? That would be really easy for most of us to do, with no hassles. Any other ideas guys? Davy
  12. If you have a Summit Racing Catalog, they have diagram of how to measure just about every single type of bolt pattern. What kind are going for, four or five lug? Davy
  13. Yep, we had a fund drive about 8 months (?) ago because the cost of the site was getting a bit too high ($300-$400/mo?) for SuperDan to foot mostly himself. Fortunately, many guys stepped forward and really gave to keep the site up and running. I know a few guys that send a check now and then. If SuperDan says the word, we'll have another fund drive and I'll happily be giving my support. Thanks to the guys that make this place happen-- you know who you are! Davy
  14. The only problem with using the braided steel hose running the entire length is that many drag racing tracks want no more than 2 feet of braided steel maximum. Pity. I agree using braided steel is easier to mount and bend. Davy
  15. Most turbocharged engines are electronically fuel injected. EFI makes a big difference in being able to run higher compression ratios with less detonation for the reasons listed above--this applies to an N/A motor as well as turbo. I'm getting tons of great info out of Fuel Injection by Jeff Hartman of the Powerpro Series. I strongly suggest this for any EFI questions you have. After I read this entire book, I'm going to read Maximum Boost by Corky Bell. Davy
  16. Northern Auto Parts These guys have Scat Cranks (better than stock) for pretty cheap. Also they have reconditioned OEM canks for under $100 I believe. Davy
  17. Bolt locker This is the guy that I bought some engine fastner kits from. He had reasonable prices, and they are available in SS with allen heads (yeah, baby!), hex heads, etc. I bought off ebay from him and the service was great Davy
  18. Cool he gave you two fingers instead of just one. Nice story. Keep 'em comin' Davy
  19. Some guys have found that their email response was non-existant, others have tried phoning, some with success and some without. They seem to have been around for a while, so if they are not out of business.... Davy
  20. One of the eaasier ways to refinish old nuts and bolts is to put them in a vibratory tumbler and polish them that way. However, they will rust as there is not protective fnish left on them. You could electroplate them or anodize them, but is it worth all the trouble? I find myself looking for stainless steel bolts to replace anything else when I'm at the hardware store. Easier, faster, etc...just a thought. Davy
  21. Zach, I think Mike Knell (JTR) mounted his batter there and did exactly what you just described. It puts the battery underneath and out of site. I like the idea; plus the battery is then vented from the outside. Not bad IMO. Davy
  22. A friend sent me a link to these wheels, which would be great if you can live with 13" or 14" wheels. I think those J-spec ZG cars run something like them. Old School Just an idea for those guys that like this look. I do, but I like 16" wheels!! Davy
  23. Man, you were right: the turn signal lenses conform nicely to the curve in the airdam. You did a nice job and they look great---even when viewed from the front, they look 'factory' (like they were meant to be there). Yep, you were right in thinking your car does look better with an airdam; it looks great! Davy
  24. What better way to make some serious cash??? That was a total score if he sells it for 5 to 10 times the money he bought it for. Use the money for the next bigger and better item, and so on... Good score, Len Me wants to see it... Davy
