I didn't want to wax nostalgic on haveing a Z car once in my life--heck, I'm young and I want it all now! It's the V8 urge I cannot kick, and now with a wife and kids, I have finally learned to budget--which really was the problem all along--I just couldn't keep ahold of any money to start a great project; until now...The only thing I regret is not having learned the wisdom sooner in my early 20's. I could have had 2 V8Z cars by now!
Hey BLKMGK,
I am too tired tonight to search the archives for you, but there was a great thread a while back where Rick Johnson talked about using full length headers. Soomeone even mentioned the company of origin that sells them for a relatively lower price. All you would need would be the ceramic coating and you're good to go.
JUST WHERE IS THIS THREAD HEADING????
I just had to chime in and say that we have a very innovative group here! A real question though:
Am I reading this correctly that the Autometer guages can dim along with the other guages by merely hooking up the ground with a resistor? I'm missing something, yes?
I need lotso help...
I totally like the combo--sounds like an awesome engine!!! I would look at piston options, though. The one statement about TRWs being (relatively) heavy is true. You can do better. With a balanced bottom end, that thing should do wonders...and last a long time!
Ray's idea of a Volvo wagon is good, especially if it has a 383 or larger motor. I own two (soon to one) Volvos and they are heavy suckers, but can hadle quite a bit of abuse.
Also, Pauli's idea of a Capri is a good one--outfit one with a large Ford or Chevy V8 and have one heck of a time.
For some reason, the audio isn't supported by my software...even when I download it from Microsoft--bother!
Your bike part innovation looks good! Hope it works well too for a long time! Keep us posted on the progress of your car!

Yeah, those Scat cranks are really great according to David Vizard. He totally loves those cranks and the way they are made--I've looked into pricing and they are so little money, anything else just doesn't come close! If I can find a decent 400 block, which is getting harder to do, I'll be in business. 377 is the way to go for me!
David
Traction problems are one of the better problems to have...also like getting sideways all the way down the street and smoke everywhere; makes the riceboys cower in fear...
Glad to hear you solved the carb/fuel pressure problem; I'll take note.
A while back someone posted a Hot Rod article url that had a destroked 400sbc with a 350 crank(?!?) that I thought was now a 377? I'm all mixed up! But somehow I think you are right, Lone, that a 327 crank (aren't they all forged) is used to make a 377? Am I all mixed up? With the hours I keep, yeah...someone straighten me out here...help!
I just saw your repost of the interior, so I had to post again! The interior is totally pristine in that car--man, what a deal you made. Go ahead, rub it in my face, maybe there's one for me out there once I dump my stinky 260Z
David
Duuuuuude, you scored BIGTIME!!!!!!! WELL ALRIGHT!!!! Sweeeet Z! With all that great stuff. Patience is a virtue and generally rewards you--CONGRATS!!!
A VERY NICE CAR! Your sig is totally raw too! Just make it a wee bit smaller and you're good to go. Congrats again on an awesome deal. This is definitely one to record as one of the great deals of all time!
David
I would say, HECK YES! I hardly ever drive my Z in a "normal" manner, and any bracing makes a difference. The Datsun unibody is not exactly a space frame, if you know what I mean I can't wait to get my 8 point cage into a Z, yeah, yeah, yeah!!!!
I totally know that feeling! I even get "butterflies" in my stomach from the anticipation of getting something in the mail once I have ordered! Yowza! Some things never change do they?
Also, if you have the time, pull the damper and put a new timing chain in place. You may not even need to do that, though since this is a temporary motor. Does the motor spin/crank turns? Take Pete's advice about checking for the plastic--make sure it wasn't a gear. Good luck.
Justen,
The 1984-1986 Camaro base radiator will fit the Z. Many of us are running that already in our cars. I bought mine for about $75 from a good wrecking yard--just went in and pulled it. With a good fan, the radiator will work fine and fit fine. As long as she is selling a direct replacement, it has the same dimensions and will fit, period. Hope this helps.
David
Good point, Ross! I had forgotten about that. I hope to keep my car free from any major leaks, especially hazardous ones! I just don't like the looks of the wrap, although I have thought about it...
David
What you buy depends on your application--how much horsepower you want and how much $$$ you have.
I decided to go with cheapie block huggers due to cost and due to the fact that I will have about 300hp in my Chebbie motor.
If I could, I would go with ceramic coated full length headers from a quality outfit like Sanderson, but that's major $$$ which I don't have. I'm cheap and proud of it... until I get money
David
Len, try GM Sports Salvage in San Jose (it's on Old Oakland Rd or Santa Clara Ave--can't remember just north of the SJ Mercury News). They are JTR's "favorite" wrecker if I'm not mistaken. They are a quality out fit and where I purchased the Camaro motor, but pricey IMO.
David
Fairlady 327's buddy will give him the cool 17" inch rims off his SS for free! That's the issue. Those wheels are sweet; I saw them and they would look so tuff on a V8Z!
David
This topic of the doors bolting up to 240Z vs 280Z came up a long while back. Be VERY careful before purchasing the 280Z doors for your 240Z. I would be surprised if they actually fit. And yes, the latch mechanisms are somewhat different. If anyone tries this, please post the conclusive results!
David
Chuck, sorry for forgetting about your post, but a mild 383 is relatively cheap and has tremendous torque, if that is what you want. The 350 has less low end torque which is not so bad considering the light weight of the car. The choice is yours.
