  1. I believe you can pull a rear end out of a Z at the junkyard or order one from Z-Parts or one of the other parts places. A complete R200 rear end was $75 at my local u-pull-it yard. Cheap IMO.
  2. Keep trying it! At first it didn't work for me, then all of a sudden it did after trying it again. To recap the video: NOZCAR hooks well and spanks a very fast RX2 or RX3. If that was an 11 sec run, which I think it was, YIKES!!! That is one fast Z!! David--the open diff wonder
  3. Rick, wasn't it you that had a T5 beefed up by a tranny shop? If it was, what did that run you $$$??? The wreckers around here have T5 unit for about $850, but this does not include the bellhousing or the slave cylinder. I may beef up a T5 unless the cost becomes stupid, then I'll go to a T56 or even a Tremec T5 adapted to GM spec.
  4. Can't help you with the tranny info, Razor, but I can give you an opinion about the FI. First, you might be able to buy just the injection stuff, but what is the cost relative to a complete engine? Might be more if you have to piece-meal it together. I'm almost sure you can install the injection stuff on an older block. However, there might be some machining to do to the block. A good engine builder/machinist will know what to do. Hope someone else chimes in with some facts and figs for you.
  5. Hoover, Oh yeah, I'm going. I have been waiting for 5 years to go and this is the year! Dennis told me your car is at Dandos a bit and I was just there last week. Didn't see your car though. Andy Craig is a cool guy and easy to talk to; I told him about our site and he said he would look it up. Hope to meet you soon!!! David
  6. Mike if you're looking to make a chin splitter, I can tell you from seeing race cars in the Deutches Museum, Munich Germany, that they are actually quite thick. I saw one on a DTM Audi that was at least 1/2 inch thick. They are fairly robust and stick out 3-6 inches from the front of the car. They use two or three small, slender rod end type mechanisms to keep the thing horizontal. David
  7. Sean, Sacramento gets a little HOT in the summer, and I don't think your fan will adequately cool the car. Although I am still in the process of doing this, I am going to use a Ford Taurus fan from the wrecking yard. It will cool like no one's business--way over 2000 cfm, and it will be cheaper then the other fan (more $$) on my list, the Black Magic Fan from Flex-a-lite.
  8. CarCraft or Hot Rod magazine had a how to make a ram air induction article that was pretty good. It used tin stack boots from the hardware store (look like funnels for ducting). The only thing is, I looked at what was available and it was ugly. I have too much pride to use those. Fiberglass or carbon fiber seems like the best alternative. I want to find out more about what John Coffey just mentioned about the air plenums needing to be there. Seems rather odd...
  9. I'm probably going to go Honda CRX seats--a buddy of mine has an Si that has Recaro-like seats that would look oh so fine in my ride. But, as usual, I'll probably change my mind about the seats when a "deal" comes along!
  10. If you want an automatic transmission, the best bet is to get a 700R4 tranny--they are fairly plentiful and parts are readily available. If you choose to go 5 speed, you could get away with a Camaro T5 unit. Go for a 1988 or later "world class" units, since they are purportedly more reliable.
  11. Kevin, I'm in the San Francisco Bay Area! Although I like Texas, I live over here! Speaking of seeing other's V8 Z's, I had a chance to meet up with Fairlady 327 and see his car. He's a cool guy who somehow manages to keep up a V8 Z while being a full-time student and working part-time. 3 hours went by very quickly as we watched the riceboys cruise by and rev their coffee can exhausts at us. David
  12. Dave, surprisingly the car is much quieter then imagined it would be. Perhaps my computer speaker is not transmitting all it should?!? What I do hear sound pretty good, but bummer to hear about your secondaries, although it should be an easy fix. David
  13. Jason, welcome to the forum! Hope you find this place to be the most informative website with respect to Z conversions. If that Z advertised is still available, check it out--price is right! David
  14. Yes, 11:1 compression ratio would not be good for the street, period. You need octane boost just to drive the car, and that's after filling up with premium fuel! Just going to a milder cam won't do it in this case. I agree with Kevin on waving less then $5000 under his nose first, since you can always go up, but not down. This car sounds good, but it really is suited more to racing at the track than for driving on the street. However, all can be remedied...

    POP

Very glad to hear it's only the diff!!! David
  16. Owen, I'm not trying to be abrasive--I'm just relaying the information my mechanics gave me. Give the DOT 5 a try and let us know what you find out; it may work really well! David
  17. First of all, the Red Line is good stuff, period. The reason you are getting more noise in there is that it is a thinner fluid by nature. The increase in noise is normal, but if you want to get rid of it, switch to their "shock-proof" 75W 250 differential/gear oil. Let us know if this helps. David
  18. Owen, from what I gather from the mechanics here at work, DOT 3 and 4 are ok, but NOT 5-the DOT 5 is thicker and not compatible. Man, if it says DOT 3, why not just use it? David
  19. Terry, this sounds correct, but I don't want a wing! Shoot...may have to suck MTBE fumes with a spoiler...shoot, shoot, shoot. Oh, well, I'm not even there yet, so I'll see what everyone says first! Man, I love this site!
  20. Hoover, I saw some pics of your car on Neyerlin's site. Looks like a beast. Dennis R. told me about it a few weeks ago and said he was with you when he went to look at Darius' car. I'd like to see yours too! David

    POP

David, do what Terry suggested and try to figure out where the "pop" is coming from. The reason I said "pray it's not your tranny" is because R200s are common and much less expensive to replace then a tranny. Good luck. David

    Northstar

Terry, let us know if you are going to persue the Caddy engine swap. If you do, make sure you document everything. Regards, David
  23. $5,000 sounds about right for a V8Z in reasonable condition. Remember, the tranny needs work, but a cam & lifters can easily be had for under $100-$200 (easy to install yourself too). Perhaps if you wave $5000 or so under his nose, he'll sit up and take notice. All the best, David

Pray it is NOT your transmission!

The Caddy motors look really trick all polished and such. If prices are really from $600 to $10000, then they are in the ballpark of some people's affordability. Since the motor is not BIG in terms of cubic inches, I'm wondering just how wide these engines are? I think the fit would be pretty good. Very high tech looking and those guys have interesting solutions to some problems. By the way Terry, try not to post in all capital letters--it's almost like you're shouting. Better to use the lower case if possible and only use caps to emphasize something Cheers, David
