GreenBanana
Hi fellow Z enthusiasts. So I messed up somewhere along the way, but the 3-piece valance set I bought a while back for my 73 240z is not fitting flush with the fenders (please see pictures attached). Were there different dimensions on these?? Maybe the guy who sold them to me said they were for a 240 but they are actually for a 260? Confused here. Just want to know what went wrong. Thanks in advance
ritrebor
Top pic is 240zBottom pic is 280zBoth pieces are completely different. ritrebor Edited October 2, 2016 by ritrebor
GreenBanana
Hi, thanks for your reply. It looks like I have the 240 one, so any idea why the fitment issue in my pictures?
ritrebor
What is the measurement on your piece? ritrebor
GreenBanana
Don't have dimensions on me. Wish I had them. The car is at a shop that is a bit far from me. I really can't put a finger on the explanation though..looks like the valence corner is not long enough but it clearly has the same form of an OEM 240 one. When I purchased it I removed it straight from a 240. I didn't study the donor car too much though..
BluDestiny
That still doesn't make sense. you had to have gotten a 240z or early 260z valance since it has the cutouts for the turn signals. the 280's didn't have that cutout so that could explain the difference. Where did you get the valance at?
ritrebor
I always thought there was only 2 different valances. One for the 240z with cut out for turn signals and the 280z without cut outs. ritrebor
GreenBanana
My car is a 72 240z. The valance was obtained from another 240z built 12/70 (I took it straight off of the car, and it lined up perfectly with the fenders on that car). The fenders I got at another time from a different seller (no idea from which car). I understand ALL fenders among 240s, 260s, 280s are interchangeable. So STILL confused here @_@ I agree with ritrebor in that only 2 different valences were made: - 1 for 240z+early 260z with light pockets - 1 for late 260z+280z without light pockets Thanks for your input thus far.. MaritimeRiceburn
Wrong fenders?
theczechone
it looks like your valance may have been shortened at some point, maybe for added flares? look at this picture, it looks visually different than yours https://s30zproject.files.wordpress.com/2010/12/p1030025-kopie.jpg
GreenBanana
@theczechone: Yeah, I can take a closer look at the valance corner pieces...but they don't look modified. The creases look factory OEM front and back. That's why I'm confused..
GreenBanana
@MaritimeRiceburn: Another possibility, but I thought ALL fenders for 240s, 260s, 280s are exactly the same

cgsheen
1976 (01/76) 280Z 1973 (07/73) 240Z 1971 240Z (this car is from Switzerland) Series 1 - 1970 240Z These are all cars I currently have in the shop and I am certain that the 1976 and 1973 fenders are original to the car. I believe the 1971 (Swiss) is original to the car but I haven't verified. The 1970 - I have no idea if that fender is original. I also have a couple of 1972's here but I didn't bother taking pictures because the fenders are all the same. I don't have any "late" Z's (77-78). I also have several valences here - including the Swiss "no cutout for turn signal lense" pieces. (Switzerland apparently didn't allow turn signals under the bumper. The turn signals on this car were mounted on top of the front bumper.)

Not exactly the same, because they were "deeper" I think for the lower radiator core support. Maybe the late 260's were also this way - (I'll check Patrick's next time he's at the shop). My early 260's were the same as the 240's. My Son's 1976 280Z has the "bulbous" valance pieces that look nothing like the earlies. We don't get many late 280's (77-78) in here though. Maybe I'll have to drag them all out and take pictures of the years that I do have...
cgsheen
This valance piece doesn't look right at all. The Z Car valance attaches to the fender at two points on the top rear of the valance. The valance piece in the pic hardly has room for one bolt!
