crazyoctopus
Quick question hoping for a quick answer because i cannot find anything about this through a good deal of searching I have an STI clutch type R180 diff with a 4.44 gear ratio and i'd like to swap in my ratio from the original 1972 Datsun R180 3.364 (possible 3.545, but need to confirm) is this possible without any modification? I am getting really annoyed with my 70mph 3300rpm cruising speed, and the terribly short gear ratio.
seattlejester
Nice to see you're still around. As long as the ring gear bolt holes and spacing are the same you should be able to swap in just the center section like on the R200. I guess the problem is finding out if the bolt holes on the ring gear are the same diameter and pattern. Also looks to be slight difference between early and late R180. I know my STI R180 was a 3.7, could you not just swap to an STI ring and pinion that fits your need? crazyoctopus
Yeah, but finding one that doesn't cost as much as another diff is proving troublesome. I was hoping that I could possibly reuse some parts, but if that is just what it is then I may be selling my 4.44.
JMortensen
They did change the R180s at some point. I can't recall when they switched, maybe late 70's, but the ID of the ring gear changed. You wouldn't be able to swap that LSD into a 1970 R180, I'm pretty sure of that. jthom5147
I believe the R180s with a K stamped on the case have a different inner diameter on the ring gear. There was a guy in SoCal who was recently selling an 06 sti diff in the 300$ range. 06 would be a clutch type with 3.54 gears.
crazyoctopus
Gah, I wish I would have waited on the purchase of the 4.
Neverdone
Sell it to some WRX Bro who has no idea what a gear ratio is and just write STI and JDM a hundred times in the ad. You'll get your money back.
