Hey guys, some how I got the "about:blank" virus. I am pretty sure it is from downloading tons and tons of hot porno. Ok jk, I think I got it from KaZaa and downloading music and car videos. Anyways this is the one that makes your home page "about:blank" and will randomly take you to that page whenever it wants. I really dont have $40 to go by some anti-virus software so does anyone know how to get rid of this thing? Or where I can download some freeware antivirus? The worst part is.............this virus is limiting my time on HBZ!!!

I use Spybot, Yahoo Anti Spy and Avast. Avast is an anti-virus program that if you download now (at least when I did) it offers FREE registrated copy for home users. It's very functional and can even acknowledge a site (warez music or porn site) that contains a virrus and asks you if you'd like to block the site. I'm constantly getting hit by virri (live in a hick town that just recently got dial up, and I don't think the ISP knows how to block and handle the high speed attacks) And avast has yet to let me down.

Note that avast isn't friendly to other anti virus programs, and will send up errors sometimes. I had to uninstall norton (it's registration ran out anyhow) Also Spybot will tell you that it can't scan avast's chest or other files. I supose Avast locks away all it's virus info in an encryption so the virus can't get out and spybot can't see what is in it, so it tells you so. Avast updates its virus database and its self automaticaly

Try here--> http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

Hope this helps

Go to Majorgeeks.com and download Avast! antivirus and Ad-Aware SE. Start your computer in safe mode and run Ad-Aware. Delete all the spyware it finds. Then run Avast! and see what happens.

If you aren't already using Mozilla Firefox as your browser, you should do so. I get maybe one popup a week.

Warning: Long Post

I've probably have to fix this type of problem a couple times a day at work. Its called a Browser Hijack and can be really annoying. Hijack This is the best program for removing this type of spyware but if your infected with this then you more then likely have some more spyware you dont know about. What I do is as follows...

Sometimes Spyware will hide itself in the temp files in your system or create new temp files folders and store info in there. I would also Check add/remove programs as some minor spyware you can get rid of it by simply doing a uninstall.

Download these programs in Normal mode since the computer is working well enough to post here it should work well enough to download these. Update them all, and dont even both scanning or removing anything in normal mode.

Ad-Aware SE

Spybot Search and Destroy

CWS Shredder

HiJack This

Restart the Computer in Safe Mode (F8 when booting)

Delete all the temp files (locations varry depending on Which version of windows your running, If your running XP/2000 make sure you do this for each user account.

C:Documents and SettingsUser AccountLocal SettingsTemp

C:WindowsTemp

C:temp

Delete all the temporary internet files (Open Internet Explorer, Tools, Internet Options, Delete files, Delete Cookies. You will have to re-enter all your passwords etc you had saved unless you dont delete the cookies.

Scan the Computer with Hijack This (most importany for this type of Spyware)

Hijack this works slightly different then the other programs in that it doesnt just find stuff that is spyware but also legit stuff so you need to read what each item is make sure its spyware before removing. It does backup stuff so if you accidently remove something you werent supposte to you can restore the backup. If you post a log of whatever Hijack this finds I can tell you what you want to keep and what you want to remove. If you want to tackle Hijack This yourself some guidlines are

04 - Generally speaking spyware gnerates random names to load on boot as well such as C:windowssystem32ifgsxta.exe or Anything loading from a temp folder (listed above)

BHO (02) (Browser Help Objects) are generally spyware unless named something such as Norton, Adobe, Google, yahoo etc...

DPF (Downloaded Program files) you can delete if they are legit or not you just may be prompted next time you go to a website that you need to redownload a plugin etc..

R1,R0 - Delete anything it brings up, This is just your user settings for Search Page, Home Pages etc... You will want to reset all these anyways.

HostFile Entries - Delete anything found

Any questions let me know. If the system is still acting up you can try Spysweeper by Webroot (they offer a 30 Day demo). One of the top rated by PC Mag etc.. but costs money for more then 30 days.

Go to http://www.antivirus.com this is Trend Micro's site, then go to personal page, then click on the Trend Micro HouseCall link. This will scan your system and eliminate any and all virus' on your system. I use their PC-cillin Internet Security 2005 and love it! Way better than Norton or MaCaffy, automatically downloads the latest virus patterns and updates. It includes anti-spy, anti-spam, anti-Trojan and firewall in one package! I also use a program called Spy-Subtract Pro, it scans for spyware, adware and also comes with CW Shredder which it owns.

A bit of feedback on this topic.

I just got some type of hijack/attack problem on my PC that was causing pop ups on this site. It was even inserting hyperlinks in Hybridz threads to display ad sights. I downloaded Ad-Aware SE and it didn't work. Removed a bunch of crap, but didn't fix the problem.

Downloaded the free spyware stuff from Microsoft. Guess Microsoft is going to include this with future versions of windows. The Microsoft program found 6 different things the adware did not. This got rid of the problem.

Gotta be careful with the free stuff. There is nothing to prevent the Ad-Aware SE stuff from putting it's own monitoring junk on your machine.
