Another LS1 in the oven

Recommended Posts

hey everyone,

So I had originally planned on running my l28 until next year but had the itch and just got a 2002 ls1 and t56 from a trans-am. Actually should be here in a week or so. I will not be getting the o2 sensors or the cats, not too big a deal I guess since I hear I can get by without them. Anyway, does anyone here own LS1 edit yet? can you delete the rear o2's with it? well I'll be doing much searching of the forum and hopefully get a running LS1 by the end of summe...lol well maybe by the end of the year I guess. Anyone interested in a good L28 with 5speed? the engine is very strong, apperantly only had 50 k miles

when it was removed from the original car, can't verify this but it does have plenty of power.

well I guess I put my foot up my crack when I thought I did not need to smog my car next year because it's a 76' but california actually changed smog laws again and 76 was only exempt to 4/1/05 so now I need to make it smog legal. anyone have a set of 2002 cats for ls1 trans-am ?

You can remove the error code for the second set of 02s and just use simms for it. I'd still run them if you are using some high flow cats. I plan to buy a copy of LS1 Edit and an autotap when I need them, but I haven't needed them yet.

I've got a pair of magnaflow cats brand ne in the box I'd let go reasonable... They are 2.56 inch in and 2.5 inch out. Bought them for my Vette and they wouldn't fit side by side under it in the narrow (Makes the Zcar tunnel look huge) trans tunnel...

$100 plus $20 to ship them!

Mike

I have ls1 edit. Yes you can turn off the rear 02's Also can do just about anything else with it. Infinite ways to screw up the car. I removed the VATS, skip shift, rear 02's and what ever remaining emmisions there were left. You can also change the rev limiter settings and remove the top speed limiter. The tuning options are mind boggeling for me so I'll pay some one to do that once I get to that point. Mark

Having done this I can attest that 3" pipes will be a challenge. I have dual 2 1/2" and periodically drag them. That is on a car that is NOT lowered. I'm sitting a full 6" above the ground at the body joint below the door.

To second Mike -you can edit anything you want but now you obviously will need the after cat 02 sensors?

Did you get the wiring harness and ECM with the engine? Did you get the radiator fans & shroud?

actually the engine is being shipped at this time. I'm getting the complete engine, harness fans, ecu, fuel tank, fuel pump. thats a bummer to hear about 3's being a hard fitment. my car sits VERY low as it is right now, with the l28 and headers I drag going over speed bumps. so maybe dual 2.5's is the way I should go then, but since I have to do it smog legal don't I need the stock cats or the magnaflow obdII legal ones? I've personally have seen Briguy280z's setup and I'm not sure how the hell I can get them to not drag. Well if Briguy is reading this I hope you wont get too upset at work when I'm hitting you up for help. The more I read around the more time it seems it's going to take. I just don't seem to like a few things, for one paying 400+ for computer reprogramming just to remove or change a few options. well I've been dreaming of this car for a very long time, actually being the second attempt at a v8 swap I hope this goes well, my last z was stolen before I could remove the LT1 from my 94 vette I totalled, then receovered after I had sold the vette. bastards! I was thinking of going with John's cars mount kit but I believe I can't if I'm using stock manifolds..sucks I guess it's a waiting game now till it gets here. I'm planning on taking some pics of the car as it sits right now and the engine (L28) is going for sale.

Check with http://www.chipsbyal.com. I think he might do your ECM reprogramming for less than $400.

Fortunately for me Texas has no emissions inspection requirement for cars over 25 years old - so mine went in without cats. I'm not sure where I would put them if I had to have them. The T56 makes it pretty tight under there - especially if the car is lowered.

You don't have to use stock manifolds, or stock cats. You just have to use smog legal equip. Now that may be more expensive, but you can do it. Even custom headers could be used. I grew up in So. Cal and we swapped a 302 into my brothers 4 banger Mustang. What we did was find a smog referee and asked. Tell him you are putting a cleaner burning, more fuel efficient motor in your car. Then ask what is essential for him to pass the car. I would as around until you find one that adheres to the spirit and not the letter of the law. Once the referee has given you your sticker, anyone smogging your car can't complain about missing equipment because you have already passed it with a referree.

If someone manages to fit cats under a first gen Z I would like to see pics. 2.5" in/out cats are probably 3 or 4 inches at the thickest point.

The rear O2 sensor are usually not used to make the engine run. They just throw a code. So if the code is edited you should be good to go. You absolutely want to have the before cat O2's or your car will never go into the closed loop mode.

I have OE exhaust manifolds that I was planning on eBaying. Email me if you need to discuss those. If you go to http://www.LS1Tech.com , or http://www.LS1.com , or http://www.corvetteforums.com I think that you will find that dual 3" pipes will not yield optimum performance. Do the search on those sites, it has been discussed ad nauseum..... I'm using the same go-fast goodies as a fellow hybrider, putting down 400+ at the wheels, running dual 2.25". Just a thought....

The OEM manifolds are coming with the engine, what I need is the Cats. Your running 400+ hp on an LS1? how did you acheive that? what mods? So far today I havent been able to locate any used cats offline, for abvious reasons..they are illegal to selll used by the salvage yards. so that leaves me with either waiting till I find some used or get a brand new seet of 43000 series obdII legal magnaflows. I sure wish I knew if there was a cheap way to pass the referee and take them out and use headers without the cats. I probably wont be able to get started installing the engine until I have this resolved so I can figure out the fittment. I wonder how HOT the cats get, maybe modifying the transmission tunnel and floor to allow the cats to sit up higher. but then I'd probably have gas pedal problems. I'm also going to try to get the 2002 service manual this week so I can read up on the wiring. well I sure thought I was getting a decent deal on this combo but those damn cats are going to make it not such a bargain at all. I'm also wondering if the car is going to be fast enough for me, not that I've had anything faster but damn rice rockets and camaros are pretty quick now. there is one mitsubishi EVO with mods in my area with dynoed ~320 hp and with his new sponsors they predict they will get him into 400+hp on an awd 4 banger ! damm thats gonna fly. hopefuly It will be worth it. with your guy's help I'm sure I'll be able to get all the info I need. Thanks

paid 3k for the engine and tranny out of a 02 t/a and 6 speed. 32k miles on it all accessories and fuel pump/tank. sounded like a good deal what do you think?

by the way since I've been talking about cats and exhaust, how hard is it to custom build your own exhaust system from the manifold back? just think that gives you more room for getting it exactly how you want. just a thought.

Check those sites that I gave you. Cats are sold there frequently. Also, the manual should be an easy find on eBay.

Mods: Cam, LS6 Intake, LS1edit tuning, well-designed exhaust, springs & retainers, good plugs, P&P TB, P&P Oil Pump, JTR 1.75" headers...multiple dyno sheets to back up the 400hp claim.

If the drivetrain is sound, you got a "Killer" deal!

A good exhaust shop will probably be in the $500-800 range. You can source your own X pipe, mufflers, and headers form the above sites and eBay. The headers DEFINITELY get from JTR. They cost over $1k to design (because they came from a buddy's prototype), so Mike is practically giving them away...get them before he changes his mind ;~)

I don't have to pass smog, I have a '73. I'm sure that if you really felt compelled, you could have a very good metal person modify them for you to have 'bungs' on them.

Mods...I'd have to dig through ALOT of files to tell you...and I've had a crappy day and just not up to it. I really shopped. Got alot of stuff off of those forums mentioned, some off of eBay...believe me, I'm about as 'tight' as they come with the $$s. Good value can be had, it just takes more time and effort.

http://www.LS1howto.com has easy to follow directions on most mods that you would want to do. The LS1edit requires good computer skills. I had someone do it for me who has done several.

I guess I could get them plain, add the bungs and have them coated afterwards. still wonder is adding the o2 sensors and using catalytic converters would be ok for CA smog since my ride is a 76'. anyone doing CA smog legal LS1 with headers?

73 speed, i have the stock cats from my 01 ta available. i'm in ny and my ls1 is going into my 73 so i have no need for them. the catch-when the car was wrecked the lower a arm hit the pass side cat. when i got it and fired it up it blew the guts of the cat out. so the pass side is essentially hollow.

pm me if you're interested.
