Dead Roman
I lost my keys, does anyone know how i can get a new set? or am i gonna have to get a new key and ignition switch set?
Warren
Key code is listed on passenger door lock for Z cars if it's not on a label in the glove box. 79-83 also has it listed on the hatch lock, remove the license plate light and read it from the side of the lock. No key codes listed or stamped into the ignition locks, sorry. Send me a PM with your keycode, I'll send you some keys. Doug71zt
If you still have the key code sticker in the glove compartment, some Nissan dealerships have the key cutter still. Get a blank and take it down to them to get cut. It may take a little calling around to find one. If you don't have the sticker, you are SOL on that ignition cylinder. My car had the sticker, and a new key worked perfectly. I know that you can take apart the door cylinders to rekey them, but I've never had an ignition cylinder apart. Good Luck Doug
zcarnut
My 240Z and 260Z have a single key which unlocks the doors _and_ operates the ignition. The four digit key code is imprinted on the door locks. So, all you have to do is remove a door panel and pull one of the door locks. Like Warren said, any good locksmith can look up the code and cut you a key. Warren
Right Steve, Just make sure that if you pull the door panel, you pull the PASSENGER side, as it won't be listed, stamped, imprinted, or written on the driver's side, unless someone put it there after delivery from the dealer. Also, ANY Nissan dealer should have keys blanks in stock and have the ability to cut the key by code, however, they only have the ability to look up the keycode by vin for vehicles produced after 1996 or so. Bring proof of ownership either way. One more thing, if you've changed the doors themselves, from another vehicle, don't expect that key code to work for the ignition (common sense). I CAN and HAVE for several of our members here, rekeyed a set of mismatched locks back to ONE key, so if you need that done, just contact me, I'm sure we can work something out. Warren[/quote'] I never noticed this before Warren, but I have to ask...why is the number only printed on the _passenger_ side lock? (BTW, thanks for the info)
Warren
Steve, I think it had something to do with the assembly line procedures in that the passenger door lock was the either the first or last installed as a set. The locks provided during assembly came in complete sets, with only 1 lock stamped with the code, until the ZX came out, then both the passenger door lock AND the hatch lock were stamped. Most import cars (Japanese that is) are similar with the passenger door lock being the only one with a code stamped on it. For the exact reason why, you'd have to ask the manufacturers, but it's been that way for quite some time. Nissan stopped putting the key code stickers in the glove boxes in 1986, so anything newer than that only has the code stamped in the door lock (ZX excluded)....... Hope that sheds a little light. Doug71zt
Thanks Warren - That information is good to know - I've learned something new today. Cheers Doug
Here comes trouble
If it is a first gen or early Datsun ..file down an old Datsun key a little. May work. You would be surprised at how many other Datsun keys work in a Z. I take off the steering lock mechanisim (had one lock at speed once) and then can use the ignition wiring harness to start until replacement arrives
Cody 82 ZXT
I can use a worn Chevy truck key to unlock my doors. Kinda weird but, works. Seems like there's always someone at work with one of these keys.
Nismo280zEd
I recently lost my one and only key with all my doors locked. Nissan cut me the wrong key a few months prior (the groves were reversed) so i took a friends key with proper groves.. and had them cut a new key to the notches the one Nissan did... it works.. but only one problem... they cut a little too much at nissan.. so my key now.. only works one way. Meaning i stick it in the lock.. it won't unlock.. take out rotate it 180 stick it back in.. it works. Warren... are you telling me you can fix this problem? I don' think the locks are original.. If i get a code off the passenger door lock you think it will work? -Ed
Warren
Yep, it can be fixed, but you should simply return the key to Nissan and let them know that you need the opposite keyway. There are 2, one is X6 and the other is X7...they should have both, just bring them the key code and they can cut it, or any locksmith that does automotive keys should be able to cut it as well. If you can't get it done right locally, send me a PM with the keycode and I'll cut it for ya. I'll know which keyway you need simply by the code. Nismo280zEd
Well I know for a fact Nissan can't cut the keys usn' the codes.. I've already asked them before. I'll check the passenger lock tomorrow and let ya know.
datsunlover
Heh.. I could start my old 280zx with well.. whatever.. The MAIL key would work for crying out loud! My current 280z is about the same.. I used a flat screwdriver the other day... Oh, and I once locked the keys in my old 200sx (1985) and got in with an old datsun key which I'm pretty sure was the spare from my first 280zx.. Soundmasterg
A friend of mine used to have a Datsun B210 back in the day and he never had keys for it. He would use the oil dipstick and it worked just fine. Greg
PanzerAce
On a related note, I'd like to get a set of spare keys for my Z *before* I lose my current set. I assume the key code is the code stamped on the key that is a letter and then four numbers, correct?
Warren
Yep, consult your local locksmith and they can cut you some new ones by code (as opposed to copying an old worn out key...(so you don't get a new key that is cut wrong)).
