I don't think the UAE is as hardcore as some of the other nations when it comes to women... but I could be wrong. I think the author and his wife (the only woman I saw in the pics) were westerners... the times I spent in the middle east I noticed some definate double standards when it came to this subject. They are much more westernized than the rest of the area and are looked upon as kind of the Las Vegas of the middle east. I saw a total of three women in the photos. THe other two were blondes and also wearing western style clothing. You'll note though that none of the 'white robes' were talking with them. When we used to go overseas (Saudi in particular) they would have Saudi 'customs' guys go through our luggage looking for contraband (alcohol, mens magazines, nudie-mags, porno video's, pork products...etc). Word on the street was that they didn't destroy anything... they just kept it for thier own enjoyment... and deprived us of our own! Those guys in question (with the robes) probably weren't talking to the western ladies because they weren't for sale... or they have thier own harem of blonde bombshells (which I hear are quite popular in Qatar and the UAE)!
