Taurus Fan Too Wide for JTR Radiator?

Recommended Posts

Went to a pick and pull and got a 2 speed fan from a Taurus for $18.50. Was expecting a perfect fit like DaleMX got in this pic

JTRTaurus.jpg

Instead the fan I got looks to have the exact same motor but the shroud is as wide as the outer tanks of the JTR radiator. Will take major surgery to make it fit.

What did I do wrong? Pulled 2 different fans and they were both this wide. Is there a different year I should be looking at?

BTW, DaleMX is one of my favorite HybridZ members. I have gotten more useful info from his posts and pics.

If you look at the picture above you will see that part of the shoud does overlap onto the plastic part of the tank, and yes I did cut it up a little to make it fit. Running against the grain I mounted mine to the radiator, but to keep the mounting straws from rubbing a hole in the radiator and causing a leak I insulated them with tubing carefully placed through the radiator.

The other day it was 100 degrees and humid as it gets. So I thought to see how hot I could get things. I ran it hard and the temp gauge just stayed where it always does. The JTR radiator with the Taurus fan is awesome and extremely light.

If you need some pic of the way I ended up installing the fan just PM me and I try to get you some better detail.

The one I got doesn't overlap the tanks by a little bit. It is a full 3-4 inches wider than the one you show. It is wider than the whole radiator.

I am headed back to the pick and pull tomorrow. This time I keep looking until I find one that is the correct width. Ever notice how many more Fords there are in the salvage yards than GM?

BTW, I did get a 2 speed model. Just too damn wide.

The fan/shroud from a Lincoln Mark 8, and 95-98 Ford T-bird will also fit on the radiator pretty well.

It uses a larger fan than the Taurus, and in my opinion, it fits the radiator better than the Taurus fan.

These can be found on ebay, if you want to see what it looks like.

Thanks for the tip. Off the Crazy Ray's this morning before it gets too hot.

Got a fan out of a Continental. It just slightly wider and about 2 inches taller than the Taurus unit in the pic above. The side rails sit perfectly on the tank unions rather than on the core. Has the same 2 speed motor, but the fan blade diameter is an inch and a half bigger. Matches the JTR core perfectly.

This thing would have been a biatch to get out, but I found one just sitting on the trunk of the car in front of the Continental. As an added bonus, got an aluminum strut bar out of a turbo escort that should work with the Z. Only $27 for both.

Will post a pic next week when the wife gets back from vacation with the camera.

Thanks Mike! Now if you can just move the exit on the passenger side LS1 header back 1 stinking inch so it will work with the stock Corvette style motor mounts. Would have saved me 3 days of welding and grinding in 95° heat.

I spent almost an hour pulling a Taurus fan at my local Pic A Part yesterday only to find out it was a single speed instead of 2 speed. There were quite a few Taurus/Sables missing the fans which must have been 2 speed. I ended up getting a 2 speed off a '94 V8 T Bird for $12,only to find out it's too big. Guess it's back to Pic A Part. Is the single speed Taurus fan sufficient?

  • 2 weeks later...

Finally got some pics of the Taurus and Lincoln fans. The lincoln fan has blades about an inch and a half bigger in diameter while the sides of the shroud sit on the tank rails of the JTR radiator perfectly. Also got the relays from the Lincoln.

My 10 amp battery charger did not like running the fan in high speed!

Too wide Taurus fan, easy to pull

Lincoln fan. thougjht it was the JTR recommended one, but turns out it is the same Taurus fan everyone else is running

Thanks for posting the above photos and information, it helps clarify some confusion.

There are a number of different fans and shrouds used on the Ford Taurus, which is causing confusion. From what I can determine, the fans you show are from front-wheel-drive cars. The lower photo is a fan from a Ford Taurus, as well as a front-wheel-drive Lincoln.

The Lincoln/Thunderbird fan I mentioned two weeks ago is from rear-wheel drive cars, and has an 18" diameter blade. The fan shroud more closely matches the radiator shown above. Because of the larger size of the blade, it can move more air with less amperage (15 amps low-speed, 25 amps high-speed). Also, because the fan shroud has a larger hole for the fan, air can move more freely through the shroud at freeway speeds.

I'm sorry, I don't know how to post pictures on this forum.

Last weekend I installed a Taurus fan on my JTR radiator but didn't like the spaces around it. I read about the (16") eBay fan in the HBZ forums and bought this one:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260016261071&category=33600

The idea of mounting it directly to the radiator seemed scary to me (plus my JTR documents was against it). I drew up a simple diagram for a custom shroud and took it to my local sheet metal shop, they made it out of aluminum for $15. This weekend (Saturday), I did some minor modifications for fitting (hose clearance, etc) and installed it with the fan. It left me with a lot more room and looks much nicer (I think). Cools better too. Follow the link for some pictures:

I have the drawing with measurements in a MS Word document if anyone needs it.

Mike I was about to say the same thing. I have the JTR radiator and the two speed Taurus fan and it is the one pictured in the bottem photo not the one on top. The two work great together.

A stciky on posting pics

Now that you mention it the continental was FWD. It has 16" blades. Well if I get bored maybe I will drop another $20 and add a third picture. Looking closer it looks like Dale had just trimmed off the right most tabs from the shroud.

That metal shroud hgeorge1 posted does look nice. Saw a guy on HP TV build one very similar in about 10 minutes with a plasma cutter. I worry a little about the flat shroud though. There was a recent thread where someone had trouble with such a shroud not funneling enough air through his radiator at speed. Let us know out it all works out.

Perfect fitting 2 speed Lincoln fan

Lincoln_Fan.JPG

That looks very similar to what I have but mine is a two speed Fiero fan and the Fiero aluminum radiator with the plastic tanks. The primary differance between the picture you have and the Fiero setup I have is that the shroud on mine covers the entire radiator and the mounting tabs on the shroud line up with pre-drilled holes on the "lip" of the radiator (top and bottom) which has one of those "clip" type nuts that fasten over the hole and allows the shroud to be bolted to the radiator.

Right now my car is fully disassembled and getting ready for a paint job etc. so I have the whole thing out of the car and if I get a chance tommorow I will take some pictures of it like the pictures above.
