slownrusty
Guys - Here is my story!!!! I could not sleep last night...seriously I woke up at 4am this morning...eyes wide open! I went to the bank last night after leaving the office, withdrew $5K for my new purchase. The new purchase was to be a 1970 911E that had steel Turbo fenders and a fiberglass front fenders and rear Turbo tail. The car is owned by a co-worker of mine and he had it advertised on our intranet forum only. He has owned the car for a little over 20years and is selling the car to help pay for his kids college tuition. It has ONLY been started twice per year in the past 16years and you can see the last time it was registered was in 1990. On the 'phone he told me that the front floor pans were rotten due to leaking battery acid but the rest of thec ar checks out. I don't really need another project at this time (I need another project like I need a hole in my head) but for $5K I said what the heck! I took my floor jack with me and a few tools and headed over to his house this morning and BOY....was I sorely disappointed (understatement)....here is what I found: 1) Its amazing, because the car looke pretty good from 10feet...I was excited but sadly under the car is riddled with cancer, floors and all the suspension structural mounting points. It was so widespread I was scared to jack the car up in fear of putting a hole through the car. The car has been undercoated with some cheap black Bondo or epoxy to mask the rust and it even is all over the oil lines that runs from front to rear, making the oil line hardly distinguishable. I would like to say that I have worked on some terribly rusty cars and I am not scared by rust (think old Datsun Z and Toyotas from the East coast) and this right up there, if not worse...all around the gas tank is very religious as it was "holy" 2) The car smoked terribly and was "missing" but started up and revved somewhat OK. The owner said the smoke was due to bad valve seals and that he overfilled the car with oil when he did an oil change 5years ago! He did mention that the overfill was probably good for the seals though...? 3) Wipers did not work, one headlight was "jerry-rigged" with a wire running out of the housing to the other side (in series). Horn was an aftermarket air horn. 4) Targa top looked like it did not seal well and needs to be completely re-done. 5) Fuel injection completely removed and replaced with Strombergs and the engine is leaking quite a bit at the case, very oily under the motor. The owner was very cool and very honest. He is asking $5K firm and I had to sadly walk away, as I could see it as a point of throwing an easy $10K at it (if not more) and thats with me doing all thw work - the good money after bad syndrome. He told me that the car will be on ebay if he does not get a local buyer. The car wanted me to take it home too....it was calling my name. So what do you guy think...???? I am interested to hear your feedback. Here are zeee pics: Happy weekend and regards - Yasin
Racin_Jason
I think you were definately wise to step away. One thing I have learned the hard way is not to buy anymore 'junk cars' -or- cars with lots of visable issues and most likely twice as many unforeseen ones. The later being my current V8Z project. Everytime I fix/rebuild one thing I find two more rig jobs or damage that need attention. Its a nightmare. I'd have walked away. Just to much work, money and headache to get it where you would want it Id think.
Guest l28et
Sometimes its best to walk away. Dont you have a 930 Turbo anyway? Throw some bank its way and have a really nice car over a few never-ending projects. I remember your old Corolla, it was gorgeous.

datsunlover
Reall shame to see a 911 in that state... but I'd have walked too.. Looks really good on the outside, but the insides are ugly.. 'Maybe' if the price was around $2500 it could be workable, but like stated above (and I'm sure you know) anything that has that many visible issues will DEFINATLY have more that you don't see right now.. Mikelly
I"m going thru this right now with a good friend of mine. Dennis owns his own company, busts his arse, gives the wife and grown daughters pretty much everything they want, and drives beaters... He wanted me to help him find a clean C5 Vette... And then sticker shock set in for a clean example... Now he's looking on these "repo" sites. Dennis has five boats, none of which run, three jet skis and two wetbikes, none of which run, 7 go karts, none of which run, three motorcycle/3 wheelers, one that doesn't run, and a host of other broken "stuff"!... And he's gotten it all on "Deals" that just needed a little piddling! One project to take your time is very managable. Two can spread your time... 12 will sink you. Yasin, You made the right choice. It has potential, but P-cars can be pricey in parts, as you well know. Keep looking for that right candidate. Mike

Many thanks on the compliments on the Corolla, yes it was a fine machine. It took me 3years to build that dang car, but the end result speaks for itself. I had to sadly sell it as I wanted the 930 and I could not justify keeping it. My 930 is ultra clean and very low mileage and my eventual goal is 500whp, so yes that will require some bank! LOL.... Yasin, You made the right choice. It has potential, but P-cars can be pricey in parts, as you well know. Keep looking for that right candidate. Mike I agree Mike, I am glad I ran. Little aesthetic things alone will easily add up to another $5K, thats before getting into the sad motor. This thing is a money pit and then some. These early 911 as they were pre-galvanize steel can be massive rust buckets, as this one is. Thanks for everyone's comments. Yasin
Duke
Fun looking at the pics..nothing like the initial romance of thinking about a new project... Unfortunately the motor rebuild alone on that thing would kill you, then the tranny, and the suspension mounts have most likely rusted out underneath and so forth. I've been down that road it's awful, especially when you can pick up a half decent post-74 model for 10-15000, or buy a decent shell with no motor and build it up yourself. Scary. http://denver.craigslist.org/car/293839805.html http://denver.craigslist.org/car/289804111.html http://denver.craigslist.org/car/273047965.html
