Why rebuild a junkyard block? Just machine a block from scratch.

A mechanic friend of mine was talking about having the outside of a cast iron block machined to remove extra material for weight reduction. He said the result was a cool looking block that weighed about 20lbs less.

Has anyone else heard of this?

My old shop teacher talked about it a couple of times, was always pro-for it. I did it a little on some heads (no longer have them and no pictures), it save about 2lbs worth on each head. This was just grinding and not really good polish, it took A LOT OF WORK and minimal gains.
