280zwitha383
The freaking DOT of texas website clearly says you can have the exhaust out the back, top, or SIDES of the passenger compartment. On top of that there are factory cars that have the exhaust behind the front tires (aren't there?!). So, can you guys give me a list or even pictures of these cars? Maybe I can take my car somewhere else and if that's all they say I can whip out some pictures (articles in car and driver would be awesome) and say what about these. Administrators BRAAP Posted April 15, 2007 Administrators Share Posted April 15, 2007 hmmm do you mean infront of the rear tire or right behind the front tire. i only know of cars that have side exhaust thats in front of the rear tire like old cobras If it helps, the early Dodge Vipers also had side exit exhaust, just ahead of the rear tires. Off the top of my head, they are one of the more modern production cars to have side exit exhaust…
veritech-z
yeah, no factory car I'm familiar with has an exit right behind the front tire, though the SRT-4s don't have any mufflers, just a cat and a straight pipe if I remember correctly. Sven
96 (?) - 2004 F150 had exhaust exits in front of passenger's tire, just about any pickup gets you behind axle exhaust dump. How small of a loophole are you looking for?
auxilary
oh yeah, the svt lightning had side dump exhaust before the rear tire

383 240z
older 'vettes with the factory side pipes, Here in Pa, they have to exit behind the pass. compartment, for trucks that only means the cab. Keith

SteelToad
It doesnt matter how much proof, or what pictures you show them, dumping exhaust gasses in front of or under a passenger window is most likely never going to get passed. IMO: there's a good reason for it.
GeeZ
It won't matter. You lose. The inspection folks won't listen unless you get a really friendly inspector (wink, wink)
Guest l28et
If you can register the SLR In TX, why can't you have a side dump like it on your car?
280zwitha383
Exactly. I really thought there were more cars with exhaust like that. I haven't taken the car to an inspector but the one I did talk to said it was a no go and needs to exit atleast close to the rear tire. If everyone tells me that I might get the mercedes dealership to write me up something and show it to the inspector(s). If that doesn't work I will just buy some flex pipe and run a straight pipe for some homemade side-pipes (and I might even keep them). One guy on here showed me some pictures of his and it doesn't look too bad (painted).
Chewievette
One of the steps chrysler had to take when getting the viper road legal in europe was to route the exhaust out the back. You might have to do the same if you dont get one of those nice inspectors.
