Lockheed YF12 Blackbird.

I was up close to this badass a couple weeks ago at the new Air and Space Museum near Dulles airport. Simply amazing. It looks even more sinister in person than in pictures.

If you go to the Air Force museum in Dayton Ohio they have one in a hanger that you can actually touch. No one was watching so I damn near crawled up into the engines.

My all time favorite is the P47 Thunderbolt. Oversized, ugly, doesn’t look like it should fly well, but with so much horsepower it is a world beater. The ME-109 is a very close second. That thing looks mean sitting on the ground. And the Daimler Benz 601 engine is probably ones of the best aircraft motors of WWII. Why have a carbureted Merlin when the DB is fuel injected?

Jets are too antiseptic looking for my tastes. They are so aerodynamic that they all start looking the same after awhile.

But if I had to pick a jet it would probably be a MIG 15-17. Those things are tiny little hot rods with big ass guns. They look like someone hammered them together in their garage out of scrap metal. Sort of like my Z. Something about those Russian planes you gotta love.

BTW, if you go to Dayton to see the AF museum, plan on spending at LEAST 2 days there. Far and away one of the best air museum in the world. They have planes no one else has. You can see a stealth fighter there.

I also like the "Blackbird" and the "Messerschmidt ME-109".

There are so many great planes from WW2. American planes are my favourite although I find Junkers JU87 Stuka remarkable as a dive bomber/attack plane. Very slow though...

Justin, I`ll be in NY until Sunday night. I`ll do my best to make it on the 27th!

Lockheed YF12 Blackbird.

Even more amazing considering it was built without the aid of computer design, models, and all the design/manufacturing software we take for granted.

My favorite, A10 Warthog. Built for close in combat, extremely maneuverable, quick, big gun, it's not called the tank killer for nothing. It can also stay in the air minus one engine, half a wing shot off, and with sections of the horiz and vert stabilizers gone. It also has armor for the pilot.

If you're ever passing thru Palmdale/Lancaster,CA on the 14 fwy.

Exit on Ave P go east to 25th St.

There is a nice static display of Military aircraft two SR-71's, F-14, F-111,Sabre jet and at least 10 more. They have big plans for even more. I think it's free, maybe a small donation for upkeep.

B-36 although they pretty much don't exist anymore. Magnesium and aluminum airframe, six Pratt & Whitney 4360s Wasp Major 28 cylinder radial engines, four GE J47 jet engines, and it could carry the 42,000 lb MK17 10 to 15 megaton hydrogen bomb (the largest nuclear weapon in the US aresenal).

At takeoff the pilots would say, "Six churning, four burning, and one glowing..."

Cool to see so many WWII warbird fans here.

Have to say my all time favorite is the FW-190. Finally got to see one in person back in April while on vacation in London. They had one on display (hung fron the ceiling) in the War Museum. Also hanging from the ceiling were an P51-D and a Spitfire MkIV.

They also had a portion of a British Leyland bomber fuselage which you could climb through, and the remnants of a Mitsubishi Zero. Very little left of it, just the cockpit and some wing supports, but you could see how these things were crammed full of instrumentation. Very little wiggle room for those guys. It amazes me how people can fly such things, let alone go to war in them.

On a related note, anyone in the SF Bay Area this weekend could check out the "Bs" @ Moffett. The group consists of a B-25 Mitchell, B-24 Liberator and B-17 Flying Fortress, all in flying condition. Walk through tours are $10, and 30minute flights around the bay are $250-$425 depending on the plane and where you sit. (Tail gunner position of the B-25 is cheapest).
