Mayolives
Fact or Fiction??? Some say the best way to store an L6 crank shaft is standing on it's end, not lying down, horizontally. What do you think?
naviathan
I've heard several different ways and reasons to store a crank. Personally I think on it's end in a piece of PVC capped on both ends is the best way, but that's just me. lol
TitaniumZ
Tom, Here's a sure fire way to find out which way to store your crank.Store one half horizontal and the other half vertical.Let us know how this works out.
Tombarace14
I saw on "extreme 4x4" where they said to hang it from the pully bolt. This would also keep it from falling over.
mark
I know nothing about this but my feeble mind can't understand how gravity would bend a crank. I can see it falling over if stored on it's end, especially in my cluttered work area.

I think the BEST way to store a crank is in a block with all the mains on. If that can't happen then I like the hanging idea. Don't want that sucker falling over on your toe... Mayolives
The "hanging" idea is a new one for me and I'll have to give it some thought. Now, when I think about the half up and half down idea from the infinite wisdom bank of Titanium Z, I don't thank that will work. But really, can a crank bend and distort if it was stored lying down, and not in a block? Really???
JMortensen
My crank that I stored lying on its side for several years had to be straightened. The machinist who fixed it told me to store it standing up afterwards, so I did. Can't tell you if the crank was bent before I put it in the garage, but L cranks are not known for their weakness... mark
Again, just my feeble mind but I really don't think gravity can bend a crank. I'm sure things get bent when stored but I bet they are dropped or things dropped on them.
Tombarace14
I thought of this as well after lookin in my garage, Hanging them would be nice because you could keep them up out of the way. Like the area above my workbench, with a 14 ft celing i dont use the space anyway.
