deja
Congrats, nice job. Too funny about no big deal cutting a hole in the hood! Looking forward to some picts to see how the hood is finished.
Dudeboy
Great work Miles, I am not far behind you guys getting your swaps up and running.
unofootball43
Nice ride I'm actually thinking about using a 5.3L in my car. Do you think using a different intake would make it so I wouldn't have to cut my hood. I really don't want to cut it unless I have to. Miles that is great! How about posting photos of all aspects of the swap. I'd really like to see your hood treatment. I understand that the exhaust manifolds are from the camaro, I'd like to see how what you cut to make them work. And, while I'm at it.... please post the front engine mounts. Are you in Wickenburg? If you are, how about driving down 10 to Indio on November 1, 2008 and showing your Z along side mine (probably on a trailer) and a real bunch of fast late model street machines. Take a look at this website: festivalofwheels.net for more details. G Hey,

Do you think using a different intake would make it so I wouldn't have to cut my hood. I really don't want to cut it unless I have to. The LS1 Camaro/Corvette intakes will bolt on and are much lower. Use the truck injectors and google "ls1 truck manifold swap" and you'll find that the ls1 intake is so low that it interferes with the accessory belt drive. The bucks up way to resolve the problem is to purchase all the Ls1 accessory drive components, including the Ls1 crank/pulley/balancer. The shade tree method is to modify the idler pulley to drop the belt down lower and to move a water hose pipe on the waterpump to clear the belt. Search these forums, I think its been discussed before. g

The other option was to use a LS1 intake and replace stuff. I am too lazy for that. Maybe one day I will, but for now it is what it is. The 5.3L motor is really overlooked by many, and according to the LS1-LS6 performance book, GM made 3 times as many of them as they did anything else. You can usually find an aluminum block L33 for weight savings for not much more than the LM7 versions. Mine were $400 (LM7 in 2006) / $800 (RX7 L33 in 2007) and $850 (BMW L33 also 2007). I found them on car-part.com. One other thing I learned after doing the Supra & RX7 is that the offset from the block is different for all 3. The Corvette tucks in the closest, the F-cars are next, and the trucks are the farthest out. This is probably not an issue for the Z car, but it was on my other swaps. I ended up running a Corvette Pulley and accessories (the car water pumps are the same).
milesz
Hey Miles, super stuff! Congrats...looks like you're close to finishing it up. Nice engineering work Wayne Thanks, but I can not take all the credit. It would not be possible if not for people like Dan, Joel, Frank, Guss and wy wife (Inder) for letting me use she side of the garage. LS1 240Z
you can use the truck accessories and the LS1 intake. you just have to dent the tube going out of the top of the water pump. alt may be to high though. i may just have to cut some exhaust manifolds for my swap now..
