Road Racing seats

Recommended Posts

I'm in the market for replacing my crappy 240SX seats (with ZERO lateral support) with some seats with better support. The car will see a lot of time on the track. I don't want to break the bank, but I do want something that will plant me in the car a little (ok - a LOT) better than these planks of fabric I'm currently sitting on. I'm 6'1, 185 lbs. My floorpans have been replaced, and the original seat brackets are gone. I have two 1" square stock pieces welded across the floorpans that appear to sit a little lower than the stock mounting locations. Only problem is - the PO welded the seats to the square stock, so I'll have to cut them out and drill holes to mount new seats with bolts. I may have a little extra room to play with in the height department, however, the car has a full cage, and it might be a little tighter on the width.

What say ye road racers?

I chose the Ultra-Shield Rally Sport. Mostly based on price, but it turns out the thing is damn comfy. One of these years I'll get to drive in it and tell you how it feels on the track, but I can say for sure that it gives a lot more lateral support than the Recaros that i used to run.

I have Corbeaus in mine also and like you the frame seat supports are gone to lower me in the car and gain headroom. The only problem with this setup is that the Corbeaus have a wide shoulder area so it pushes out on the door when closed and causes problems when I try to open it.

24Gs. Bloody hell. That is well over engineered (Don't get me wrong, I'm impressed and I like it). We are talking hitting a wall and stopping dead at almost 850km/hr or 500mph. Now that is some G Forces, I guess that design standard won't need to be updated for quite a few decades. :)

Look for a seat that has 8855-1999 FIA homologation certification. That allows mounting without a back support and can safely handle up to 24Gs in an impact. I'm partial to Cobra and their Monaco seat is $270.

+1 to the FIA rating. I had to add a back brace to my Sparco Evo (old school, old seat :) ).

You should try to sit in as many different seats to see how they fit you. What works for me, may not work for you. Go see what seat John (W) has, try it out, and if I make RA you can try mine. Keep in mind that if you are going to use this on track, you need to try the seat with your suit on and with gloves unless you only plan on HPDE. Why with gloves you ask? TO see if you can still work your belts while sitting in your seat. It might be more difficult than you think.

I'm using an Ultrashield deluxe road race seat. My seat/safety knowledge has increased by leaps and bounds in the last few years and I would probably NOT use any of the less expensive aluminum seats if I was in the market today. The seat is a very important part of you safety equipment I would really like to have a Butler or Lajoie seat in my car. The custom seat people make a much better/more safe product but they cost a lot more than the cheepies. Too bad, it's all about money again.
