ottoauto
Have had issues with the transmission since it went in. Grinds into 2nd, 3rd, but is drivable if i double clutch. Could it be the wrong gear oil. i think its napa 75w 90. as far as i know its a long ratio 5-speed out of an early 280z
big-phil
bleed clutch slave?
ottoauto
I'm going to be trying that when i get home. Bleeding the clutch slave and rechecking that the rod adjustment is correct. I wasn't sure if that could cause it to grind in only certain gears but ill be checkin it
woldson
On my first ZX I had the same thing, mostly second, a little third. With new oil I added a additive called energy release, problem solved. If you have the money, consider going all royal purple?
ottoauto
I've tried bleeding it, and i think some air certainly came out. Also played with the adjustment. maybe slight improvement but I'll be trying some different fluid tomorrow.
ezzzzzzz
redline oil
Flexicoker
I had royal purple 75w-90 in mine and it would crunch into 2nd all the time. i put Redline MTL in and it is alot better. Does it grind when you put it into reverse when the car is not moving?
DevilZX
I have the same problem. I'll be watching this thread. I have the reverse grind. 2nd has issues going in upon decel. (82 turbo 5 speed. Royal Purple oil.)
ottoauto
I just put valvoline synthetic in and its damn expensive to try to many other options. I have read the redline stuff makes a difference before. im going to look around and see if there any additives i can try before draining this stuff. My are grinds if i dont double clutch it going into 2nd, and 3rd (but not quite as bad). Reverse is no problem.
m4xwellmurd3r
I don't have any problem with any gears on my Z except 3rd gear. I have to baby the hell out of it or else I get a grind...though...it really does need oil i'm sure and I'll be the clutch could use an adjustment (i have to push it straight to the floor to get a good disengagement)
Flexicoker
If it doesn't grind going into reverse, it is most likely not a clutch adjustment issue
JMortensen
Probably bad synchros. Not that uncommon, especially in 2nd and 3rd gear. I'll add SWEPCO 201/ATF 50/50 blend to the list of oils that might bandaid it for a while. When that fails I'd expect you need to rebuild it. m4xwellmurd3r
If it doesn't grind going into reverse, it is most likely not a clutch adjustment issue it does have a hard time going into reverse some times, but hitting 5th then reverse pops it in no problem. heavy85
As Jon said most likely synchros IME. Not THAT hard to replace but is a PITA. Cameron
m4xwellmurd3r
yeah, too bad I don't have the room (or money currently) to pull the trans and rebuild it. for me it might be easier to just find a known good 5 speed and drop it in. Might as well save up and put a new flywheel and clutch in as well hahaha. for now I just baby the tranny so I don't do any more wear to it. ottoauto
I'll just pull the damn thing this summer and replace the syncros. I've never done a rebuild. Its pretty straight foward yes? Replace the synchros, and seals. I would just leave the distances on all the gears where they are.
